What a remarkable sight to see the reunion of Robert Plant and Alison Krauss gathered around a couple of microphones in Nashville. It's been 14 years since their surprising and remarkable album Raising Sand and now they're back at Sound Emporium, the studio where they recorded some of that first record and the entirety of their new album Raise The Roof.
Huddled in the control room are an all-star cast of musicians, with Jay Bellerose on drums, JD McPherson on guitar, Dennis Crouch on upright bass, Stuart Duncan on guitars and ukulele, and Viktor Krauss on electric bass and guitar. All of these folks minus JD McPherson played on the original recordings of the songs you'll hear in this Tiny Desk (home) concert.
They kick it off with the rockabilly sounds of "Can't Let Go," a song originally recorded by Lucinda Williams and written by Randy Weeks. For their second number, Robert Plant recalls a song he first heard as a 15-year-old listening to some great R&B by Bobby Moore & the Rhythm Aces. He and Alison Krauss put their hearts and harmonies into a cover of that song, "Searching For My Love." Alison takes the lead on the final tune "Trouble With My Lover," written by Allen Toussaint and recorded in the '60s by the "Lost Queen of New Orleans Soul," Betty Harris. These interpretations are delicate, gripping and so damn special.

Thats how a singer can age gracefully with dignity...choosing the right songs, still curious, vivid and loving what you do.
Indeedly!
An artist what can do all that is one to listen to thru the ages.
And that unmistakable voice.
Absolutely, x2 i couldn't have said it better, cheers!
Man, Robert and Allison's voices go together like bread and butter. And the band is so tight, you could hold a credit card between those licks. I could listen to these guys all day.
Wow. When the band is smiling like that, you know they are laying down the good stuff. What a performance.
That's a good one: "the band is so tight, you could hold a credit card between those licks"👌😁 ...and I agree...
Me too, they just have a chemistry. I can really see how they love performing together.
YES totally agree, ME TOO
Alison is the butter of your analogy, she makes everything better on quite a wide spectrum of artiste
This has got to be the most legendary 2am post of all time.
here in Brazil it's 7 a.m and it's time for my medicine. which is NPR music.
Yes!!!! It was like Santa came! What a gift!!!! Thanks NPR
seriously
Hear hear! Sweden here!😉
So good 👍😊👍
Real music, by real musicians. Like a breath of fresh air.
Stupidest comment on the net.
Alison Krauss is such a wonder. Kudos to Plant, mega rock star, to collaborate with the likes of Alison.
HE should be bowing down. Alison voice is like an angel singing ❤❤
I've never heard 2 voices mesh together as well as those two; just absolutely adore
Have you heard the way Dan Tyminski blends with her? I can't tell them apart sometimes when they're singing together. Coming up in the world as a bluegrass musician like she did, teaches people how to harmonize well.
@@EchosLens no I have not but I'm talking about 2 different voices that compliment each other so perfectly, not that sound alike
I liked the "searching for my baby" song BECAUSE they sang different parts, I prefer for them to have some separate parts as their voices are unique... I don't really like it when they sing in unison but having both of them on the same song is cool.
Ahhhhh, ever listened to Anni Frid and Agnetha
Wow! Gotta love that Vox 12 string!
I have to say Alison Krauss is completely adorable and that voice...wow!
Saw her live with her band Union Station several years ago. Her voice is incredible - just as good live as on the record(s) - and sometimes even better.
She still gets all giggly when she is nervous. I love it.
Go listen to Moments Like This from the Twister soundtrack. She is seriously what an angel would sound like if one sang
how is she literally so insanely perfectly spot on??? she's absolutely incredible. perfect tone, pitch, everything. unreal.
Saw her live with her band Union Station several years ago - is she really is almost unreal. Her tone, pitch, etc. was perfect.
I get a kick out of watching interviews of these two, or Alison on her own. She's very funny. She teases her co-conspirators in music making, in interviews and on stage in concert (like w/Union Station). But Robert Plant gives some of the teasing right back to her in some interviews -- implying that she's a bit of a taskmaster when it comes to harmonizing together. She's a mensch though and I'm sure she's gentle while being a music teacher to those she collaborates with.
One of the many things I love about Alison Krauss is that I can trust her to never use autotune, the sound of which is like fingernails scratching a chalkboard to me. Because she can sing in tune when practicing and rehearsing, she will never need to use it -- as long as she can hear herself. I'm certain that's a must for her because it's part of how you harmonize with others. You're literally all creating sound waves, throwing them together, and it can either make a harmonic sound or a dissonant one. I don't know of much gray area there. Maybe that's why I love tight harmonies!
She’s a literal angel. She also hasn’t aged a day… ??? Sus
How? She’s the one and only Alison Krauss, and there’s no one better at what she does.
Everything you said, vocal-wise. Plus those smokey-eyed looks ugh I...just melt every time. 🤭🫠🥰🎙️😍
Where's the friggin' LOVE button, RUclips??!!
That boys and girls is what you call talent......and execution. Great music no matter what genre you happen to favor.
Absolutely incredible.
Plant ages like a fine wine and Allison is just perfection.
Absolutely apt analogy.
Indeed!
She has such a clean tone & timbre to her voice & Plant... like you said.
Together, they make for a nice match.
Yes, quite impressive. 👍👍👍
Robert has a knack for finding the right singer to pair with
Krauss's restraint is what makes her so great. She's pulled Plant back, and in so doing given him more power. Just amazing.
Many decades of Studio experience in that room. Allison and Robert are magic and this should have been at least an hour long! Wonderful stuff.
An hour wouldn't have been enough!!
Totally Agree 👍
Definitely getting into the centuries if anything, seeing as Plant alone has been in the game well over 50 years!
I can't believe it's over that just flew by. Hitting replay right...
Absolutely! Thought the same!
Robert's genius is amazing. Alison's vocals are beyond brilliant. Coupled with a tight band, this is next-tier music.
"Beyond brilliant." Is that in Liberal Kansas where Dorothy is from in the Wizard of Oz? Otherwise, I'm not sure what or where is "beyond brilliant." If you really just mean you like her singing, then "me too."
NPR, thank you for hosting all of the Tiny Desk Concerts. They are like jewels to be discovered by anyone willing to open their ears and hearts. Many of the artists premiered (not these 2) have been groups I've never heard of but have thoroughly enjoyed. If only we could take this same attitude with everything in life. ❤
Totally agree. 90% of the music I buy comes from artists--old and new-- I have been introduced to from TDC!
I honestly think these two together is one of the greatest collaborations ever.
You're not wrong. This 3 song set is absolute perfection.
there just singers man.....
@@RobertSlover The day you sell more albums than them then I'll agree with you.
Me too. Fabulous together.
Ditto
Just in case Robert Plant wasn't enough of a legend he continues to put out quality music at 73. What an amazing duo him and Krauss are.
Krauss has raised up Plant, immeasurably.
never mald and you will not bald
@@AndyCutright see I think they work perfectly together. Krauss brings a lot of definition and dynamics to the high range while plant just lays down a flat octave but when they get down to the low range plant adds his classic led zep dynamics.
@@themakerstoolbox9688 Oh yea. Big smile.
so eloquently stated zee best
What a tasteful band! Not one extra note, everyone playing for the song, and the vibe. And, of course mrs Krauss and Plant are just awesome.
Ms Krauss not Mrs.
@@glennhfriedman4571 Sorry, my mistake
Very talented singers and musicians, and great songs!
I'm watching Jay on drums, incredible. It's very difficult playing softly and sounding that good. Dude is a wizard!
She's doesn't mess with the notes, because her range is so clean. Love her voice blending so well with Plant. they're great!
Hello 👋 Janet. How are you doing? Hope you are fine. I'm Zack Hudson and am from Denver Colorado, where are you from? You seem like a real country girl
@@zackhudson5172 eew
sounds like she has perfect pitch. Clean and effortless AF ugh 🎙️🤌😍
Good stuff..
Just wonderful. Robert Plant is definitely a great singer but it's Alison Kraus's voice that sends the shivers up my spine.
yo!
I'm always happy when we give more mature artists a platform and chance to have a break through. This Robert guy will probably make a name for himself.
😁
heard he was in some loudass cover band... Leed something or other...
😁🎸🎤
Do ya think?
loool
Nice troll
Robert Plant: A man who found unspeakable triumph with the mightiest musicians on the biggest stages and lives on to present music on one of the most well respected virtual music platforms of our time. He's covered it all.
Wow that was incredibly written. You are fantastic with words. Peace!
Robert's vision is a good one: move on and do new musical things and keep the past in the past. To hear this music just proves his point.
Honestly, I feel like he's giving back.
This unlikely duo make real music- what a pleasure!
Trouble with my lover is incredible .... Alison's voice is stunning
Guitar perfection, no extra notes, no fingerboard gymnastics, not too loud, explicit tones, a master player. Yeah, everyone else is fantastic including the re-birthed Everly Bros.
I can’t believe music this good is even legal. They are both otherworldly, and that band is killer!
... definitely agree about the band too🦋!
The musicians are incredible and Robert makes me melt. He can eat crakers in my bed anytime 😊
Hahha😂😂😂 well said!! I totally agree!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤
Her voice is crystal clear. Sounds like a perfect recording.
The Angels reach down and blessed her vocal chords........Alison is the purest voice you'll ever hear.
Incredible all the way.
@@_JimS PREACH. AK&US Live is an AWESOME showcase for that angelic voice.
She is like a Siren. In fact, she probably is one.
@@publiusking8004 She's certainly entranced Plant. Krauss has drawn him into her orbit, and created something great.
Thank you for this brief burst of loveliness in a dark time and a world ruled by monsters.

These are two musical geniuses who have taken excellent care of themselves and their voices over the years. They sound incredible separately and create transcendent harmonies together. A collaboration at this level is unprecedented. And with this band behind them? *chefs kiss*. Keep the hits coming, we love you two!! Alison is a Goddess on Earth. 💌💞🔥🔥🔥
Hello 👋 Veronica. How are you doing? Hope you are fine. I'm Zack Hudson and am from Denver Colorado, where are you from? You seem like a real country girl
Une harmonie parfaite, des musiciens en finesses le summum, ❤ Robert & Alison ❤ embellissent nos âmes nos cœurs
🎵🎼🎶 Ils sont merveilleux!
I remember after Raising Sand came out, I was listening to a Robert Plant interview, and he said he didn’t feel intimidated when he played in front of 250,000 people, but the first time he sat down with Alison Krauss and T-Bone Burnett in her living room, he felt intimidated by her presence and skill. Wow. All y’all just discovering Alison Krauss… if you think she’s a great singer, you should hear her play fiddle! She was called a “virtuoso” by Vanity Fair when she was just 13, after winning a national bluegrass fiddle competition. Her fiddling is even better than her singing, if that’s possible.
Practically she is nearly 24 grammy winner in bluegrass genre dude..nothing else is needed to explain her aura!
I'm looking forward to learning more about her bluegrass now. Thank you.
I thoroughly enjoyed this! Robert still sounds amazing, she has the voice of an angel and the band is 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Agree!😀
same! They sound so good together and she's so friggin' cute I can't stand it ugh lol 😍
🎤🎤👍
Yes, that voice is still good.
What an absolute treat. Their voices lock together perfectly and the musicianship is also perfection. Merry Christmas music fans
Merry Christmas to you also music fan.
Thanks Dan Rather for posting this. A great way to start the day!
I never thought there would be an album that would top Raising Sand, their first totally brilliant collaboration, but this album is perfection. I have listened to this hundreds of times and it thrills me every time . These artists are truly incredible !
When I saw those 3 names, plant, Krauss, NPR I couldn't hit play fast enough .... and wooooowwww.
This is superbly engineered, a perfect blend of their voices and the instruments- and everyone seems to be having a blast. Thanks NPR!
Not to subtract from the music or anything, but it's dubbed. That's why it sounds so good.
@@cynefinmusic Why do you think it was dubbed? It looks like it was recorded in the Studio A control room at the Sound Emporium in Nashville. A tight to fit everybody in.
I'm a sound engineer. You never get that kind of isolation with everyone in the same room. Listen to the sound of the vocal mic when he speaks, it's completely different.
@@cynefinmusic It's certainly dubbed. Look at the drums on 4:05, it doesn't even match his playing. Good call.
@@cynefinmusic That's BS! Tiny Desk Concerts are never dubbed!
is this heaven? no it's Robert Plant and Allison Krauss at the Sound Emporium in Nashville with the best musicians on earth 🌽
eh, thanks as for ever grateful
This is incredible. I've loved Robert's voice since I was a kid and he never disappoints and his duets with Alison are just magical.
This is what happens when you combine two geniuses from opposite ends of the music spectrum: pure gold. Good music is simply good music and it defies any sense of typecasting. Just listen to it...anyone with a musical ear can enjoy this.
She is literally one of the best and most solid singers ever.
Even silk can't be smoother than those vocals by the Divine Alison.
AND A GREAT FIDDLER AS WELL
I was thinking the same thing ! Just SOLID and pitch perfect everytime !
@squib 31 Don't let the easy on the eyes part fool you. That voice is what gives her soul and body beauty. It's truly a rare and wonderful thing.
Where have you been your head in the toilet she is losing her voice did you read also she only cares about herself trust me ahhhhh
Robert’s voice is so distinct and original and Alison Krauss has the perfect voice of an angel, who would’ve thought these two voices would blend so well. I love that they brought back Bobby Moore’s classic, Searching For My Love.
I still don't understand how his voice continues to get better over the years.
Hi there hope you’re doing well?
0:00 - *Can't Let Go* (3:11)

She is the off the scale her voice can give a person goosrbumps and the songs she sings are tough and she sings them so well especially with union station
Plant is still exploring music only not the high volume, bombastic music like before. He’s finding the forms and styles of music more interesting to explore than the volume. He’s been there and done that already and he doesn’t wish to repeat himself.
I applaud him for this collaboration and it’s like country blues music with no restraints. They can literally go in any direction musically.
Fantastic!
This collaboration is legendary
Not yet. To be a legend or legendary it has to involve a signigicant passage of time. I imagine you're of that generation that thinks anything really good is "legendary" because of not knowing the meaning.
I had no idea they put a new album out! Man, this is golden! Raising Sand was one of my favorite albums, and this new stuff sounds as good or better.
Me too and I absolutely adore Raising Sand!! SO happy they did another one
What's the name of the album? What platforms is it on? 🔎
Agreed - and IMHO the new one, Raise the Roof, is better than Raising Sand.
@@mrubengmail 🏃🏽♀️💨❗ gonna look for it now
wait - they have another - ?? oh my...gotta find this -
These two are two of the most polished vocalists in the pop-country-blues world. Such clear notes. Its just beauty in sound.
@Alison Krauss Yes miss. Indeed I am, as is most of my family and many of my friends. Honored and humbled by your talent..
Perfection! Two icons and a perfect band. No fluff and nothing’s out of place. And Alison on the last song. Wow!
Love how Robert has brought a new depth and strength to Allison’s angelic voice .
Vice versa
@@jettsomaexactly. Allison’s voice will make any artist bring on their A game or it will hi lite how bad they sing.
My kids woke up at 3am and we’re all sick and miserable. This was the absolute only way to fix our spirits 😌🥰

I have loved all the duets by these two. I hope they release a few more albums together. Alison Krauss is one of the best vocalists on the planet.
Incredible! They are so good together, "Please sir, may I have some more"!
It's like seawater meets the shore. Different and in the very moment their voices blend, it's truly soul enchanting
Alison Krauss is, at least in my humble opinion, peak female voice.
why don't you grow some balls and say it with authority??
Two legends one tiny desk
I don't understand why JD's guitar work isn't on the album!!! These live performances are SO much better with his work!
SO great to hear and see Jay Bellerose playing a vintage kit. Modern master of tasteful drumming. Go Jay!
I thought the same thing. Feel tone and groove! smooth as silk.
@@campcrafter4613 I love the texture masters as much if not more than the virtuosos. Great feel is like magic...
These 2 voices blend perfectly ,so smooth, beautiful and dreamy. The band is perfect,I don’t know how this all blended so perfectly but it has and it’s my favorite music now, please never stop.
I love this collaboration! I'm so glad they continue to perform together.
Angels wish they could sing like Alison and she just gets more beautiful everytime I see her!
Her voice is smooth as silk 😍
Alison is singing in a voice I’ve not heard before, nothing held back. And I’m loving it!
I was just thinking the same thing....reminded me of a young Stevie Nick's belting out Rhiannon with the Mac
Great vocals, for sure, and wonderfully noisy obsolete guitar pickups, give this music great tone, and style! What a band!!
She sounds like supernatural, like in a dream, a fairy tale...
This duet is awesome!
(im happy Alison Krauss has been inducted into the bluegrass hall of fame!!! so very well deserved!)
Love this duo, and what a great band!
This is formidable! mellow LionKing Sir Robert Plant is still hot and awesome, Great Lady Allison Krauss sings like an angel, now well all of them super nice BandMates, thankYou'all
The live performances are even better than the record. More naturalness, more emotive vocals. Each one letting their vocal personalities thrive just a little bit more. And Jesus, JD McPherson on guitar and backing vocals. C'mon!!!!
Beyond the stunning beauty of the music and the charisma every person pictured here has got, this is one of the best sounding npr I’ve ever heard
Just sang Robert happy birthday at Lake Tahoe last weekend during their concert, and flying to Portland to see him and Alison at Edgefield Winery this Saturday!
Such an amazing pairing, these two. Alison has the most amazing voice of any musician today. Incredible talents in both of them.
I love the sound these two make. They compliment each other so well. The band are totally on point too.
This music puts me in such high spirits!!!🤗😍 I wish the concert lasted longer than 3 songs. Alison has the most incredible voice...so touching and mind-blowing!
@Robert Plant May your career be the longest a musician has ever had!
No surprise Robert struck up a friendship with Miss Krauss she is such a smooth sounding singer the two of them work blend perfectly
This has to be one of the best tiny desks yet, purely belter 🙏🎶
All my respect to Robert Plan. Such a great musician!!!
Their vocal chemistry is out of this world.
These two are just magic together!
Yes it’s so superlative. Hi Rebecca how are you doing today i do hope you’re safe?
Robert & Alison make such a great duo. They are both such excellent artists! The musicians are top notch too. 👍👍👍👍👍
Fabulous!
The blend of harmonies and great musicianship make this an absolute joy.
Love how they harmonize. One of my favorites.
He's worked hard at it.
zee coolest.....
Such a pair! They sound SO good together-and the band wow!
Sounds like they are having a blast together.
This is when the greatest music is made.
Very well done!! Shoutout to JD McPherson for bringing a little rockabilly to the session 👏👏👏
These two are are magic together and the band is incredible.
What can you say! It would just take too many superlative adjectives to describe this amazing duo! WOW!!!
Same here it’s so superlative. Hi there how are you doing with your family i do hope you’re safe from the Covid?
Alison Krauss' and Robert Plant's voices phase so well.
What a pitch perfect harmony singing by Alison❤
The amount of talent in this one room cannot be measured! Really enjoyed this, thankyou!
Abousutely best duet I have heard.
They hop off each other brilliantly.
Fabulous, just fabulous.
Elegant, touching, poignant, groovy, delicate, powerful, inspired and technically flawless... all rolled into one.
Wow - thanks, to all involved.
👏👏👏
I grabbed this new album as soon as I knew it was coming - It's on constantly
Same here. Hi there how are you doing today i do hope you’re safe from the Covid?
Polished perfection: every piece of those songs is wonderful! Can Alison Krauss really sing like that every time on call ? Jay Bellerose usually steals every song in which he drums but Alison is dazzling here. Awesome band and precious music.
I could have never predicted how wonderful Robert Plant and Alison Krauss would sound as a duet, or that they would have even tried. They are so good together!!!
"That's a song I like singing, yea..." - Robert Plant.
This set made me dust off my Raising Sand vinyl, man what an incredible collaboration, I love their voices together and super tight musicianship.
One of the best Tiny Desk presentations ever! They’re great together AND how about the band! 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏🙏🏼
Just saw this tour at the Mann in Philadelphia June 12 from the 2nd row, it is in my top 5 concerts, awesome!!!
wowza the Mann is still there huh! I saw Kansas there as kid around '82...great venue! 🎶
Beautiful! Simple music, played extremely well. No overdubbing. No over-production. This is what music is meant to be!
I think the upright bass might have been overdubbed. They did a great job concealing it, but there's a few moments where you can tell. But I'd wager the rest is live.
They are having such fun as well..A joy to watch! My best friend already got us tickets for my birthday to one of their concerts...I wish such a best friend on each and everyone out there!
I love them singing together ❤ 💜 💕 💗 💓
Simply a Beautiful Duo - like two angels caressing my ears...
And the band is just as amazing 😍
Allison's voice. Wow! Just a band of great musicians enjoying playing what they are playing. As a LZ fan for decades, took me a while to understand why Robert Plant never wanted to put the band together. Now I get that he doesn't want to be an artist stuck in the past, playing tunes from the past, no matter how great, and never really being able to sound like the old days. He's a different person and LZ would never sound like it did back then. OTOH, he sounds amazing as part of this beautiful collaboration.
Well put. Though I must say, Robert can still belt Zeppelin. Check out the incendiary Whole Lotta Loves from 2017/2018. Robert puts everything into those performances. I'd also put Roskilde 2019 as one of the best/most unique sounding Black Dog renditions Plants ever done. Blows the rest of his recent Black Dog performances away from that year.
They get better and better. Very satisfying. AK has been my favorite female vocalist for decades; irresistible.
Love that Gretsch sound! What a group. Thing is, nothing is overplayed; it's just the right touch.
