Martin Shkreli got trolled by someone on a phone call and found his mom's instagram and made him think he's gonna slide in her DMs to ask her out and the dude started appologizing and begging him not to do it.
@@dacomputernerd4096 i was gonna say, the Spy just wins that. This is a contender for second place though, with one other contender being Saruei contacting the mother of a guy who sent her unsolicited images of a one-eyed snake, if you catch my drift
The more I learn about Thor (Jason), the more I like him. I would have given the mom a call too. "Hey, your kid is about to ruin his life, and put you in a terrible position as parents, but kids do stupid stuff and I know what it feels like to wield the power he's wielding. Go put him in check and we'll call it even.". Haha!
Not only that, but he pointed out the kid's potential and future lucrative career. Instead of telling his mom that the kid needs to stop hacking, he clued her in on the idea that the kid can do it in a healthy way.
I think complimenting the kind's skill to his parent was an important part. You didn't just call and say "your son's a piece of shit and I'm going to sic the feds on him if you don't straighten him out.". You said "Your kid is awesome, but he's using his awesome to do things that are about to get him in giant heap of trouble that WILL ruin his life. I don't want that for him."
Great way of handling it. What he did was already incredibly messed up, but doing it to someone like Thor adds a layer of stupidity that's hard to fully comprehend. I hope the kid's in a better place now. Mentally I mean, not the six feet under kind. I've been sixteen and stupid before and got scared and stopped being stupid. Testing boundaries is just a thing we do as we grow up, and it's no fun if that ruins your life.
Plot twist it was the mom all along doing it. I remember in class someone kept trying to hack our server and our teacher traced it to Hong Kong and called them. They guy blamed his son but the time zone difference math didn't math so he knew it was him trying to scapegoat his son if his son even existed.
I hope that the kids mother didn't permanently remove computer privileges. The kid might have a future in tech but some parents can go overblown especially when felonies are concerned. I mean sure, thats a paddling and a grounding. But well. Todays stupid kids are tomorrow's security people. If allowed to be.
Given Thor's story about refusing to give up names of people he was able to social engineer due to poor training, I bet he went out of his way to talk up the kid's potential. Hopefully she listened.
Imagine thinking it was a good idea to hack and harrass someone who is known for this sort of thing lmao I love that he just called his mom cause yeah, there is ALWAYS a bigger scarier fish.
I had that "I can do anything" moment when I was... twelve, I think? Followed immediately by the "oh no I got caught" moment, too. Got in trouble for getting into my school principal's email account (through the stupidest security flaw I've ever seen in my entire life, so bad that I stumbled across it entirely by accident). The principal scared the hell out of me, talking about how she could've called the cops on me (it is a felony, after all) but instead just suspended me for two days. That event is probably what eventually kindled my interest in cybersecurity and resulted in me ending up where I am today.
Let's hope he also pointed out to the mom, "By the way, the whole reason I was able to call you directly, you put your friggin phone number on a public post! Please! Go fix that."
Does that mean you still have his social details? Is he still posting or did his parents bury him for it? And I mean bury as in nothing tech related ever again not physically bury. Be willing to bet he couldn't sit down for a week!
This reminds me of the time when I caught somebody hacking into my recently-deceased father's Netflix account. He used a very poorly-secured IP so I was able to look up his IP address and actually got his physical address. I proceeded to physically write him a letter, addressed by name, asking him to stop hacking into my dad's Netflix account. He never hacked into it again.

I mean, the original idea (kid does dumb shit to the most wrong target possible on the internet, gets absolutely vibe checked by ‘wrong target’ swinging back) is pretty classic and happens decently often. People aren’t really that privacy oriented anymore, it’s possible to absolutely make this kind of mistake. I believe the story, honestly. Maybe it’s phrased in a more exciting way than it was, but the base premise is 100% believable.
I can. We had this happen in school. Someone kept trying to get into the servers we had in class, so the teacher traced it to Hong Kong. Teacher called and the guy tried to blame his son but our teacher did the time zone difference math and that math didn't math which meant he knew the guy was the hacker and just tried to blame his son, if his son even existed.
"Nice hacking, kid. Unfortunately, Your Mother."

...is this basically the ultimate "your mom" joke?
Only second to the one in Meet the Spy, perhaps. That one had photographic evidence lol

Thor was Uncle Ben for this kid. With great hacking power comes great hacking responsibility!

Finding old credit card info isn't impressive. Then again I can do the same thing so maybe it's not impressive to me because of that factor.

I hope his mom was hard on him, but not to much and that that kid ends up doing good.
Police officers and the feds think that ruining your life is you, so it’s good he didn’t have to contact “authorities,” on the kid.
