    I'm a train driver and I've tried a few train sims (not this one though). The problem is you completely lack any kind of feedback from the train. It's actually pretty easy to stop a train within less than 2 meters in real life.

    • @michaelkelly3158
      @michaelkelly3158 5 лет назад +3

      Interesting! Is there a specified area in which the train has to be stopped in real life, or is it just a case of 'pull up anywhere at the station'?

    • @papaquonis
      @papaquonis 5 лет назад +5

      @@michaelkelly3158 I can only speak for my own experience with "my" train, but we do have to stop it at a very specific point. The braking accuracy expected of me and my colleagues is certainly to hit that point within less than half a meter - which is actually not that tricky. The tricky bit is combining accuracy with smoothness, that does take some practice to get it right.
      I would expect most modern (and well maintained) passenger trains to able to have that kind of accuracy under normal conditions.

      In Japan the train schedules are so tight that a 4 second delay can literally make you miss your connection. There is regular passenger flow analysis done both in and around stations and adjustments are made for modernization construction projects. Trains shutdown generally before midnight before which you’ll the engineers and maintenance workers examining the cars as the final passengers disembark or get just transport to their site. Construction is done at night after everything is closed.
      Sometimes there are delays due to suicides. People choose take their lives by train because the operators payout well and though they may have decided to give up their lives because of shame or hopelessness at least their families will be provided for.

    • @sittingstill3578
      @sittingstill3578 3 года назад

      @Allen S Can you disprove it? I heard it from expats who have spent decades in Japan and have Japanese spouses. I was told that the _Hankyu_ Takarazuka Line (Osaka Main Line) in Osaka experiences less suicides precisely because they refuse to payout to the families and it is also why the trains are so well maintained. I’m not sure where I can find the info to back what I’ve heard. It’s likely only available in Japanese.

    Denshe de Go! series is fantastic, I have all the 3DS games and even have the rare PS3 game which uses real HD footage for the environment. There's just something so relaxing about them, probably the same reason why Farming Simulator and Euro Trick Simulator are so popular.

    • @MAIcrosoft
      @MAIcrosoft 5 лет назад

      The PS3 game (Railfan) is technically not a Densha de Go game, but a Ongakukan game but with a Densha de Go mode. They also had a game on the PSP whith the same formula. Ongakukan is well known for their train simulators which uses real life footage as graphics, and next to games they also make train simulators for training purposes of real train drivers (or those to be).
      Also, which version of the game do you have? The Japanese version of Railfan has the Chicago Brown Line as a bonus, but there is also an Asian version which not only has Taiwan High Speed Rail as bonus instead but also an option to play the game in English (or Chinese) which makes this the only Ongakukan game ever officially localised in English!

    • @InputArchive
      @InputArchive 5 лет назад

      MAIcrosoft Oh thank you for the clarification, I just assumed it was part of the same franchise due to how similar the game is! I have the Asian version, the Japanese one is much rarer and goes for stupid money these days. Sometimes sellers on EBay get the two versions mixed up, but unfortunately I'm always too late haha :(

    • @MAIcrosoft
      @MAIcrosoft 5 лет назад

      They are still pretty affordable on ebay imo, but yeah I can see the confusion because it features the Densha de Go logo in game lol (the PSP version has it even on the box). They included the mode because Ongakukan train simulators are no arcade style games but more simulation and are balls hard and not forgiving at all. That's why they included Densha de Go mode so it play's exactly like Densha the go so the game is much more accessible.

    Cool, the Japanese guy playing the new arcade version pointed at the speed limit, changed the speed, then pointed at the speed limit again. This is normal practice for train conductors in Japan; it's designed to keep them focused and alert. RUclips "Japanese train pointing" - it's pretty interesting.

I definitely recommend newcomers to play that version. The yellow and red signs come up when your driving too fast for too long. You basically catch up or run into other train traffic, which triggers the automatic emergency brake. The PSP and Neogeo Pocket Color versions are pretty cool as well ;) Next suggestion for a 'professional game' to review: Tokyo Bus Driver for the Dreamcast!

    In the Western world on consoles, there is Train Sim World released this summer by a British company named Dovetail Games. It's based on the Unreal Engine 4 and is very, very realistic. You can pratically use every button in the cab ! For the moment, there are British, German and American trains and routes, one of each with the game (three routes with six trains(3 British, 2 Americans and 1 German), seven (one more American train from a PC exclusive route) if you pick the Deluxe edition) + a few others on DLC's. But it doesn't have any special controller. It's made for a regular DualShock 4 or Xbox One gamepad. And that company, Dovetail Games, is also the developper of the Train Simulator serie on PC.

    8:30 You have to keep the time on schedule even if it is non-stop station. If you keep it exactly on time you have a spare seconds added to the top of screen. Or, if you are ahead of the schedule, you may need to slow it down, seeing the yellow or red ATC light to drive slower (8:45) . This is to prevent collision to the train ahead of you in real world scenario.

    I absolutely adore Densha de Go! It’s inexplicably addictive, fun, and relaxing. A true arcade masterclass.
    But don’t play the first two games if you value your sanity. Densha de Go Professional is the way to go on PS1.

    I love trains. Playing with HO model trains used to be my favorite pastime until I got into computers. I've tried various Densha de Go games, but never understood how to play them properly.
    I can't really enjoy a game if I don't know what I'm doing. Even if I'm not good at a game, I need to feel like I understand what's going on and why I'm doing poorly at it.

    Nice video, I played this game series a lot, though I don't think the characterization of "stopping with pinpoint accuracy" is the point of the game (though still required), it is actually stopping at and passing through stations at the exact scheduled time (on the exact second if not stopping, and within one second if stopping, for the older games like the ones shown in the video). Do it consecutively and you will accumulate huge chain bonuses that push up that three-digit point counter a lot (up to over 400 points in the second game), very easily cushioning any errors you make. I remember doing mental calculations on the fly (e.g. if I have 20 secs to the next passing through station 500 m away then I need to do 90 km/h) to get those bonuses. Also, arriving early is actually very bad, and is why the amber signal came on in the video to slow you down, which would usually make you irrecoverably late the next stop and possibly all subsequent stops, leading to a rapid game over if you don't have that cushion of points mentioned earlier...
    Here's some gameplay of the FINAL (2003) version with English subtitles ruclips.net/video/PQA2z8Q0hIE/видео.html

    I imported Railfan on PS3 and currently go for a drive on Xbox One via Train Sim World on occasions but they lack something. Now I know what I'm missing!
    We need a controller like this in modern gaming!

    I remember the Brighton Belle on the Speccy, so much fun back then and I will admit I do use Train Simulator when I am not playing World of Warcraft, TS is about as close as you are gonna get without driving the real thing and I would say to people its one of them things to do before you croak is to drive a real train :)

      TSW aka Train Simulator the next generation is also on an Unreal build I seem to recall and you get to drive trains a lot better than the bloody lot running our rails at the mo, I think quite a few people would disagree that we in the UK are not as entrenched in railways as the Japanese, when a steam hauled charter couple weeks back went thru our local station here in Dorset the platform was mobbed with people taking fotos on both platforms shoulder to shoulder as the old girl thundered through.

    Another series available worldwide is the Japanese rail sim 3d series for 3DS. I have the demo for journey to Kyoto and its surprisingly fun even without the custom controller. Unfortunately if you're a physical game collector the English ones are digital only in the west.
