  • After diving SAN FELIPE of the 1733 Fleet, meet Shipwreck Historian Karen McKee for dives on SAN FRANCISCO and LA ALMIRANTA near Long Key Point! SAN FRANCISCO was an English built merchant nao displacing 264 tons. Nicknamed "The Craig Wreck", she's situated in 8' of water 1 mile seaward from Craig Key. Visibility on this solid ballast mound sometimes exceeds 30'. Craig Key protects her from the cloudy, sediment laden waters of the Gulf of Mexico flowing out from nearby Channels 2 and 5. A great introductory wreck site for snorkelers as well as divers, SAN FRANCISCO is home to thousands of friendly fish. Then, blaze 1 mile 220 degrees to LA ALMIRANTA, the vice-flagship of the Fleet. This 500 ton leviathan bristled with over 60 cannon and protected the rear of the convoy. She's nicknamed "The Cannonball Wreck" by locals, for the thousands of cannonballs recovered here. Situated on the eastern edge of Channel 5, the Cannonball Wreck can be a tough dive. Unpredictable currents, visibility less than 10 feet and large Bull and Tiger sharks are a reality here. On the positive side, she's loaded with delicious fish like snapper and grouper. Thousands of lobster find her ballast irresistible, but locals pick her clean before the start of season!

Thanks The000clash000! My videos with accurate GPS Coordinates will help you find the shipwrecks much easier than I did!

I'm excited to have run across this video. Magnificent it is!
My first dive in life was on the San Pedro. I was only about 16.
We had a homemade dredge and sucked sand away to find relics.
My prize of that trip was a dead eye similar to the one shown at 4.30 approx. It was a beautiful relic that I kept for almost 55 years.
I didn't know what would happen to it when I reach the end of my journey.
I reached out to Dr Seth Bramson and he led me to donate it to the History of Diving museum in Islamorada about 5 miles straight line from where we retrieved it in the late sixties. They were glad to get it and I respectfully
relinquished my relic into their hands. I hope to see it again someday in one of their exhibits. Thanks for sharing these awesome videos. Would love to dive on some of them in the near future..

Thank you Sir. That was my wish when I left it. I hope it comes to pass. I spent a lot of time wanting to do the right thing with it. It belongs in a museum. It was a bittersweet moment. But it was the right thing to do. Thanks for writing back. Many well wishes to you.

Thanks,@@timwalker3157! SAN PEDRO #11 was the second Galleon of the 1733 Fleet I ever dived after diving LA ALMIRANTA off of Long Key Point dozens of times in the mid-1970s when I was the Dive Guide for Finley Ricard's Atlantis Marina in Long Key. I relocated SAN PEDRO in 1993 one afternoon after a "diving professional" at Bud 'n Mary's Dive Center in Islamorada told me she was "about one mile west of the dock on Indian Key surrounded by 6 mooring buoys". Well, after moving my search to the south after not finding her to the west, I finally found her about 1.25 miles SOUTH of the dock on Indian Key! She was already a Florida State Underwater Archeological Preserve by then with concrete replica cannons and an anchor reportedly recovered from HERRERA, #8 of the 1733 Fleet. I've always enjoyed combing through the sand in the pockets near the wreck, plainly visible in aerial footage of her in Volume 22 of my "KeysDiveGuide" RUclips Video that features CHAVEZ # 6, HERRERA #8, TRES PUENTES #9 and SAN PEDRO #11 of the ill-fated 1733 Fleet. A few days later I relocated EL INFANTE #3, then a month after that SAN FELIPE (EL LERRI # 12) one mile offshore Lower Matecumbe Key. After that I decided to find all 15 sites, record the GPS Coordinates and produce a VHS video about the 1733 Fleet called "Galleon Hunter"©1976. My shows featuring all 15 sites are in my RUclips Channel so divers and navigators will forever be able to find the wreck sites with relative ease.

@@KeysDiveGuide An absolutely amazing life you have had Sir. I respect it and admire it. I will try to utilize the compiled info to see which ones I can realistically get on. It’s been a dream of mine for decades to do. Thank you for all that you have done for history and the dive community. I started day tripping to keys with my family in the late fifties and never stopped. I do what I can. Grew up on south Biscayne bay. I still love and adore the keys. Saltwater and 50:1 mix part of my blood. I guess it always will be. Bless you and all your endeavors.
