    Wow...I’m just amazed at how ingenious and easy to use this tool is!!
    I just found an Awl in my late father’s toolbox, and wanted to know what it did and how to use it...having never used one myself.
    After seeing this video, I remember Dad repairing sails with it on our sailboat.
    Thanks for the great tutorial...and the nice memories!

    How do I remove a broken needle from the awl?

  • @davidmckinney8362
    @davidmckinney8362 3 года назад

    The opposite end of the screwdriver tool to remove the bolt is for tightening the needle in place. He didn't mention that but seems that must be done to keep the needle in place but wouldn't that also lock the thread in place?

    • @chrislangtiw6395
      @chrislangtiw6395 3 года назад

      The thread fits into the groove in the needle, so as long as the thread is properly aligned, it won't get bound.

    I have a Speedy-Stitcher, as well as the Tandy Stitching Awl. I prefer the Tandy because it is more instinctive to use. The exposed bobbin lets the user brake the tension with the index finger, rather than rely on a twist around the pin on the Speedy-Stitcher version. I've found that, with certain weights of thread, the pin "jams" the thread and I need to manually pull out the thread I need I order to keep going. The Tandy awl has a free flowing bobbin and can be reeled back if the tension gets a bit loose and you end up with too much thread between the tip and your work. Just a better design. I do a lot of sail mending, holster and sheath making, so I need continuity with no problems. Never had one with the Tandy.

    • @OutnBacker
      @OutnBacker 3 года назад

      @@thaddeauscaldwell7101 I think you'll like it. Neither version is "speedy" but you won't be stopping as much with the Tandy. I especially like it because the bobbin, being exposed, can be checked for how much is left. And, it works like a fishing reel with no drag around that pesky pin.

I use reading glasses.. but dont ALWAYS need them, (OR want them!) For things at distances like this its here or there. A needle instead of glasses to get thread in that hole is how im looking at it. Thank U for the tutorial. The waxy thread in mine when i found it was very thick preventing it from working right. (well i was practicing with a thick plastic/rubber material too.

      I picked up a blue handled ice pick looking puck at harbor freight tools . It is stainless with a blue wooden handle . You won't need for some materials . Although I tried it on some 1/8th in leather and it woks great . Although one should be carefull on how far you push it through . Which is all relevant to how big yuou need the hole . If one needs a smaller thread hole then only push through a lettle and then go to the other side and do the same . Or there is also hole puch hand held machines with different so

    • @leiatyndall8648
      @leiatyndall8648 4 года назад

      1 yard roughly equals 1 meter, w/ the yard being 3 inches shorter than a meter (36 in vs 39 in), if that's what you're trying to ask). So, for every 4th meter, there's a difference of abt a foot (3 inches shorter times 4). If that makes sense to you.

    • @TandyLeatherCo

      +Bevin Chu The Sewing Awl Kit makes it much easier to push through the leather for faster sewing. If you are interested in a two needle approach, you might find saddle stitching a preferred method of sewing: ruclips.net/video/qi3BRWO7kuo/видео.html

    • @thechinadesk
      @thechinadesk 8 лет назад +2

      +Tandy Leather I probably failed to make myself clear.
      What I meant was to use an ordinary needle for the LOOSE END of the thread, to help push it though the loop on the backside.
      I'm referring to the move at 2:12.
      One would still use the sewing awl as pictured in the video.
