I have used these with my grandkids for several years and they love them. We live in an apartment that won't let us have a small pool so these are great for summer fun
My friend's kids had a couple of these at our softball game. They were throwing them at each other, and they were having a blast! I thought they would hurt, but they threw them at me, and it didn't hurt. They are 3 and 6 years old, so I can vouch for the no pain when hit!
Great tutorial! A school teacher friend asked me to look into making these for her field day. I've now made one, and can see they are quick, easy, and I can make a ton of these out of one Big Ball. I'll make up a dozen or so, then give them to her so her family of all boys can "test" them out. Love that they're washable and reusable!
I’m very excited to try this pattern. Can I just say, I find it so intriguing that you switch between yarn over and yarn under and your stitches. no matter how hard I try I can’t do a fast yarn under. I have to be specifically focused to be able to do it. 😂
Love the pattern thank you I make these often for gifts for kids. This version is not entirely eco friendly as this type of yarn is acrylic. I use 100% wool for mine 😊
Pro-tip to anyone else who is new to crochet and trying this pattern: the instructions are clear and easy, but DO NOT make your first one yellow. The lemon you end up with is a bit disheartening, but the more you make the better you get. Do the yellow balloons last.
Hey, I was just wondering what happened to the link to the written pattern? All the link does is say page not found. I absolutely love this pattern and its the only water balloon pattern that I like to crochet. Thanks for such a great pattern and in advance for any information on the written pattern. Stacey
Can this be made using non-polyester yarn - these are 100% polyester and add to the microfibres...? Thank you for a brilliant alternative to water balloons though!
No. Natural yarns do not work. Only chenille yarns will work for this purpose. However, just by using this acrylic yarn and creating fun REUSABLE balloons instead of using rubber or latex balloons (the missed or discarded scraps of which can choke birds and other wildlife), you are preventing a lot of pollution and waste.
A crochet technique question - sometimes when you insert your hook you hook over to pull up a loop instead of yarn over. Does that make a difference? Thank you.
I know you asked this 10 months ago but there is a difference between yarn under and yarn over. Yarn under makes it a bit tighter, but it probably won't make too much of a difference in this pattern
I'm a loose crocheted in general, I was trying to figure out what I was doing differently. It was the way I was holding my yarn. I intertwine the yarn so that it pulls up next to my left pointer finger and then I start crocheting lifting the yarn over my finger. I hope this helps!
@@valrog6924 I'm still new to crochet, so my tension is not quite as constant as hers. But I used a smaller size of crochet: they don't stay round like hers do, but they are as cute ;)
Codi Way that’s what I did, so changed the pattern a bit and it worked! 2nd row- 8 dc in to 1 st row, slst, ch2 3 rd/4th row repeat 2nd row 5th row- dcdc to 8 ,st, ch 2 6th row- dcdc to 4 ,st, ch 2 Last row- sc around 2x to make balloon tie/handle and then slst and weave ends in! First time writing a pattern hope that helps anyone having issues with sizing! Thank you for your reply.
Bernat yarn is made of polyester, which may release micro plastics into the water. Please use natural fibers for water balloons, like wool, cotton, or hemp.
@Trevor McDowell to my kmowledge, inly wool felts when washed. Coton thiugh has a tendancy to stink if you don't soak them and wash them thoroughly (like the dishclothes, can't stand them 🤢 ) and I've never worked with hemp....
So you came here to tell people not to use acrylic yarn, but you have no alternative solution because you know nothing about knitting? Cool virtue signaling bro.
Wool and cotton etc DO NOT WORK for this pattern. It is the particular type of chenille blanket yarn used that makes it work. It’s what makes it absorbent yet still soft enough not to hurt. It needs to “splat”! Wool and cotton will hurt when hit with the water balloons. Do not substitute the yarn.

How did the test go?

Thank you!!!! We live in apartments and this is perfect. No clean up! This will be our summer fun.
I filled mine with some foam son that they held more water. My daughter and her friend approve. Thanks for the video!
I think I may try that as well.
What kind of foam?
@@KarinaMargaritaFoam son?
@@Yasmine91646I believe they were meaning to say "so" not son 😉
Thank you for this! I have so much of the blanket yarn that I haven’t decided what to do with it so I think this is it!
A friend brought these to a 5 year old birthday party party and it was fun! Thank You 😊
I'm learning to corchet specifcally to make these, we were given some and my kids loved them but we don't have enough
Then make more. :D
Thanks for the pattern. I would love to crochet something fun for the grandchildren

this makes no sense what?? usinf this logic i can say a green water balloon ends up as a pear
Crochet this balloon and love it. Can I use other types of yarn like velvet instead?
I love e your tutorial.
I ll make all the skein.
Thank you
This is a great idea!! Thanks for the tutorial. Now to have fun with them. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 🎈 🎈
These are so cool!! Thank you so much for sharing,
Awesome idea! Thank you!
New subscriber here! Thank you so much! I will have to make some of these!
Love them love the colors just was wondering how many do you put in a set and how much do you charge for aset
Great job 👍 love it looks amazing 👍
Does it HAVE to be this yarn? I followed the pattern exactly but my balloon wouldn’t decrease

so do you just dunk it in a bucket of water or similar to get them wet?

How many balloons were you able to make from just this one cake of yarn?
Ashley Bickford From on Large Skein of Red White and Boom I was able to get about 14.
Love this!

when you make these for craft sales - how much would you sell them for? (sorry if this question is too personnel)
Thx so much. I just purchased this pattern on Ravelry.
Do you know how many you can make from one ball? Thanks
is velvet spun the same? It seems to shed? hmmm
it is a bear to see the stitches
Is it ok to used Bernstein baby blanket yarn it is a 6 weight
Awesome video! Thank you so much!!
Can I use velvet yarn
How do you keep your stitches so loose? Mine get so tight and make the balloon look weird.
Pull your loops out more when you're working and keep a loose tension.

Do u have written patterns please
You weave your ends like I do lol
Thank you
Love these but cannot find this yarn. Love the different colors. Where can I buy it?
Joann's, Michael's, and Amazon all carry Bernat, but this cake may no longer be available. This video is quite old.
Why is it necessary to turn it inside out before finishing?
If u use hdc instead of dc they hold more
I’m confused, so u soak them in water and then throw it to each other?
Vanessa Carballo yes
Can you use velvet yarn
When using in a pool, does it sink?
Someone suggested sewing a ping pong ball inside so they'll float
Yes , but pink ping idea sounds great! Dollar tree has them
They float most of the time until they get really saturated then they’ll sink finally.
i cannot find the stripes yarn anywhere! any ideas?
Magic circle someone showed me you do the circle with regular yarnthen go over top with fluffy
Mine measure a bit over 6” and that’s using a size 6.5 hook. Where do I find this yarn at?
Michael's or online
Great. Thanks
What size hook is a 9, want to make some for the summer
I’m changing to single crochet. Has anyone else done that? The double crochet turns out too large and “gangly.”
I agree
Or maybe HDC? I'll try my next one with that. I also like the idea of stuffing a little foam inside them.
I used a us K hook, size 6,5mm
@@valrog6924 I'm still new to crochet, so my tension is not quite as constant as hers. But I used a smaller size of crochet: they don't stay round like hers do, but they are as cute ;)
What other type of yarn can u use if not this one?
Maria Barrera None. Bernat Blanket yarn (any of them) is the best amd doesn't hurt when it lands. She has an FAQ on her website about it.
Can someone tell me if they know of people selling these, how much they are selling them for?
Lisa Pully check Etsy.com
I saw the idea here first, for sale: www.veganviridity.com/collections/seasonal-summer-collection/products/water-balloons
Thank u so much.
So for row 3 and 4 is is singe crochet or double crochet?
It's double crochet.
After my 2nd row it went to double the size! How do I fix that?!? So instead of 16 there were 32 double crochet and I can’t figure it out!
jackie melcher should go 8 dc, slst ch2 then 2 dc in every st 16
Codi Way that’s what I did, so changed the pattern a bit and it worked!
2nd row- 8 dc in to 1 st row, slst, ch2
3 rd/4th row repeat 2nd row
5th row- dcdc to 8 ,st, ch 2
6th row- dcdc to 4 ,st, ch 2
Last row- sc around 2x to make balloon tie/handle and then slst and weave ends in!
First time writing a pattern hope that helps anyone having issues with sizing! Thank you for your reply.
Codi Way go to the website LeftinKnots.com to see the pattern written out. It's better explained there.
could not find these colors anywhere, walmart, michael's or even online.
The video was posted 3 years ago. I’d say use any brand of blanket yard you can get & try it out.
Link to pattern pdf?
Thank You!

Do you have a brand you'd recommend for these reusable water balloons?
@Trevor McDowell thing with wool, the more you'll play with it (or then wash it) it will end up all felted and hard as a rock!

Help!! Each place where I slst and ch2, there is a hole. What am I doing wrong?
I realized that I was yo before the slst. Once I corrected that, it looks much better! :)
hmmmm mine didnt turn out like yours
Neither did mine, but the kids still have fun
