I don't usually shoot 4k. Boggles down the workflow a bit and eats up storage space. I shoot and edit and in my personal videos I don't roll unless I'm pretty well versed. Corporate stuff i've done I always just use cutaways to cover issues. I don't particularly like "down the line" cutting where possible. Very good points though, when I update my system etc I'll probably experiment more with it. Sometimes i'll shoot 4k plates, but i'm never default 4k at this point. Great video Todd, really happy i stumbled across you today. Looking forward to catching up...ps: sorry for the essay.
Glad you're putting out more videos more often; I am really enjoying them. BTW I have both of the video instructional videos from FKP and they are awesome; really helped me (even as a dedicated (fanatical?) amateur)!
Good show! I usually do video that is presented in 1080p, and I only shoot 1080 for my RUclips channel. For any commercial stuff I do, I shoot in 4k. I think this would work well for most shooters ... I really don't see a use in content creators shooting in 4k, flat profile, color grading and all that. I am pretty sure that it is difficult to tell the difference when viewed on RUclips. To me it seems like a waste of time ... I also don't buy the future proofing stuff. I am a fan of Hitchcock movies, and I think they are probably "future proof". Most of the stuff on RUclips (including my own) won't have much value after a months, much less years.
I'm struggling with LUTs and apps like Color Finale. Are there free LUTs available and do you use any software like Finale? Maybe you can do a video unraveling this topic. Thanks Todd. Great work.
Todd did you try the Fuji X-T2 for video? The crop is smaller than you got on your Canon, and you can get 4:2:2 if you use the HDMI with an external device.
Great video; thanks. I am now a subscriber. Do your "for sale" videos explain what to do once I get my video file into Premiere Pro and how and what format to export plus export settings whether or not I plan to later upload to RUclips? I'm editing on PC. I'm doing video on Nikon D850 which is H.264 8-bit 420 in-camera. Coming out of HDMI port is still 8-bit but 422. Thanks!
Just having a little Wiggle Room like shooting 5k for a 4k deliverable and remember to Wiggle it just a little bit so that you can get the Essence of the shot.....the Essence....
do you feel limited by the motion jpeg format on 5d mk4? thought file sizes were huge on that? i've been a canon user but was thinking of switching to GH5 or Sony for 4K video rather than upgrade to 5d mk4
Yea, 1080 from 4K definitely looks better than something just shot at 1080. You're getting more detail and color information in 4K. So you're 1080 from 4K looks better.
I stick with Canon because I feel like the 5D has a superior picture and the video auto focus is unmatched in my opinion. But yes, the codec just eats up hard drives.
Do you shoot 4K or naw?
Don't have 4K camera, yet.
Otherwise, I'd always shoot 4K and compress it to 1080p! :P
Yeah, but i don’t know why.

As they say, use the camera you have with you. So I shoot in 1080.
Just lovin ya videos Todd. Please keep doing them, you are so easy listening and i learn heaps from you hey....
When I switched over to shooting in 4K, it opened up a world of possibilities for me in post. Never going back.

Solid material, Todd!
Great tip. Thanks Todd.
I should shoot 4k more often. Great video sir.
Great vid Todd, thanks mate.
Todd, great stuff here mate. Personality and info GO.
Good info Todd. Thanks!

Hey Todd, what do you think about the 4k of the 5D4. Everybody hates the codec and the quality, what's your opinion?
Brian O'Halloran at 3:29!
4K all the way! Great info as usual 👊💯
Ok, convinced.

+Flour City Bread Co. Ugh. Hate the process of color correcting. I’ll see what I can do in the future. It’ll be a learning experience for us all.

It’s the awesome dual pixel AF that keeps me with Canon

+Lyle Cameron We touch on importing and exporting but not program specifics.
Great info. The music was good at the beginning but became distracting. 😦

I have been shooting this year in 4K.

+Alan Adamson It’s hard to compete with Canon’s Dual Pixel AF. That’s why I stick with 5D4.
what was the reason for you to choose the 5Div instead of any other camera, say a Panasonic or a black magic?
I’ve been a canon shooter for a while. I own a lot of glass already. And I love the canon color. Just personal preference.
yep, definitely like him better as Todd than as Fro.
I want to shoot 60fps, but my camera only does it in 1080p, should I just stick with 1080 or go down to 24fps at 4k
I have a D500. If shooting 4k cropped (1.5x1.5), would you still use this and go to a 1080p timeline?
+Mike Kanir Sure. The resolution should still be there.
What about compressing from 4K to 1080, they say that it’s more “pleasing” to the eye rather than shooting 1080p off the bat???
Cheers

Todd Wolfe uggghhhh, that amount of storage needed lol. Just discovered your channel. Gotta dig deeper into it.
You talked about jump cuts... I'm the jump cut king lol... Maybe you can do a video on scripting videos yea or nay for newbs like myself
Do you apply the same ideas to 2.7K which is offered/(=an option) by many cameras ?
You could to a lesser degree.
What size CF cars are u using I have the mk4 also and went with a 64gb cf
+PremierReviewer Lexar 64Gb 2000x SD cards
Todd Wolfe ok I have the same one
I shoot 4k tshirt coming!
+Focus Media Ha!!!
Trademark! , Nail it !,#crushedit
#crushedit
1080p60 is better because it's smoother
If you hate the crop factor don't shoot Canon. Plus the 5d Mk IV has the worst codec of any DLSR or mirrorless camera
I stick with Canon because I feel like the 5D has a superior picture and the video auto focus is unmatched in my opinion. But yes, the codec just eats up hard drives.
I care it is in 4k, I shoot and render in 4k for me.
where is steeepheeeenn 😂
I shoot on film. Case closed! Lol
Sorry for the dislike
When I have red camera I will shoot 8K I gave you dislike because of only red camera can shoot more than 4K and 90% of people can’t access this camera
