Yes Ed, this series needs to continue. Using Automation for prototyping is brilliant. In case you don't know, cars made in Automation can be exported to the game "BeamNG", allowing you to yeet your awful creation off a cliff while being chased by the cops. I'd love to see the Corvette if it was rear or mid engined from day one. Or what if one of the French car makers built an American grade pickup truck.
alright, I'll keep it in mind and will make some changes to the format. I used to play BeamNG as well with my own creations but my computer can't seem to handle it very well anymore....

The fuel cap would be behind the rear license plate. My Mom had a 1976 Continental and that’s where the gas cap was. The license plate holder was on a spring loaded platform that swung down allowing access to the cap.
I still want to get a cheap "Retro Bird" from 2002-2005 and swap in a 5L Coyote or 7.3 Godzilla engine and a 6R80 or T6060 to make something that could have been.
Awesome idea for the series! My pitch for a "what if car" is: What if Ferdinand Porsche made a People Car (Volkswagen if you like) in the US for Chevy/Ford.
@Ali Cuntë - it was that "swing arm" suspension that doomed it, but by '65 (especially the Corvair Monza coupe*, which it was GM's first dib against the OG Mustang) that rear-engined Chevy was quite acceptable, to the point of being good, but the damage was done already... * one of the two first US cars with an optional Turbo (a T-2.7L H4), the other being the Olds F-85 w/Buick's T-3.5L V8 (same engine to be sold to Rover, sans the turbo)
Just two: • 1981-83 Imperial with vertical taillights and a bumper mounted rear licence plate. • A current Hyundai Elantra with tailfins. The side sculpturing is already 90% there.
Ed you did such a fantastic job at creating a “what if” car that I think you should make this into a series!! It’d be so cool seeing what you can come up with!
Wow, I did a double take upon seeing the thumbnail and realized the car was made in Automation. Great to see another of my favorite car youtubers plays this wonderful game!
I love this series, definitely do more! I never thought of making these "What ifs" in Automation. You should have used BeamNG to drive it around tho I have 3 Ideas: What if Packard survived? What would a modern day Tucker look like? Ferdinand Porsche nearly worked for GAZ in the 1930s. What would a late 1940s GAZ sports coupe look like?
Note: In South Bend, Indiana, which was the headquarters for Studebaker/Packard, they have an annual contest open for art students, professionals, and amateurs to submit ideas for 'What If Studebakers or Packards were still made today?" Many of these designs have been posted on the internet.
Automation is, perhaps, my favorite game. When I want to build an engine that's based on a historical car, it's pretty easy to look up the bore and stroke online. Getting it to produce the same power can be difficult, but I usually set the cam to 18 (or about 40 if it's supposed to be a screamer) and then tweak everything else until it starts to run right (which can take some time). Much fun! 😉
The Automation x BeamNG symbiosis is probably the best this that happened in indie game market ever. Being able to create your own car and drive it in a proper driving game with proper physics is just amazing.
I live just north of bill from curious cars. His videos are hilarious. I love how he calls the 302 by it's actual size in that lincoln video. He says 5.0 and then coughs 4.9 under his breath. 🤣🤣🤣
An idea could be if Cadillac produced a small, sporty luxury 2 door that was more bmw-esk then classic Cadillac, in an attempt to become “hip with the kids”
The opposite of the modern ATS. Today they build the Camaro off of the ATS/CTS Platform. Ed’s challenge should be to build a 6-Series/928/E-Class Coupe competitor for Cadillac out of the 1980s F-Body IROC/Trans Am platform.
Ed's creation is a lot more attractive than the actual vehicle was. By the way I am very impressed by Ed's command of the English language. Since he is from Denmark, English is probably his second language. He seems to be a very intelligent person.
This is a great new series Ed, and what a way to start. It would not surprise me if some Ford executive is scurrying down to the archives right now to make sure their design blueprints are still there and not actually pinned up on your wall next to your computer. And you used the word subtle in terms of 70's American styling. Priceless. I would like to see something in reverse. What if someone like Fiat took an American 3-box square car from the 80's and tweaked it with some styling cues from their original 500 and 600 cars? A Fiat Multipla woody kind of thing?
As a fan of Automation, YES PLEASE CONTINUE And I have a suggestion, what if AMC carried on into the 2000s, with new Gen Hornets, Javelins, Gremlins, etc
I remember playing a racing game back in the day that allowed you to blend different car models together to make your own custom car. Can't for the life of me remember what it was called, but I believe it was a game during the PS2/Xbox-era. I thought it was an incredibly cool feature. My daily driver has a 1977 Windsor with a 2-barrel carburetor. It is a _very_ slow car. Especially when the AC is on, and especially when pulling out of my driveway onto the highway in the morning when the engine is not fully warmed up. It's O.K., though. Those people going 15 mph over the speed limit in front of my house can just chill out for a minute while I get up to speed.
That really does sound like a cool feature and now you have me very curious to know what that game was. If anyone knows this game, I beg you to give it a shout-out.

ED!!! You're wrong about the Lincoln Versailles. In stock trim, sure it wasn't overly powerful I suppose. However, it had great bones, it was a great base to build on. It had a 351w, C6 transmission and a 9" rear with disk brakes(one of the best sources for such a 9"). All it takes is a budget stroker kit(393 being the most budget) , E7, GT40 or GT40P heads if not a set of budget aluminum heads that range from $800-2000 complete, a hydraulic roller cam conversion, a 4bbl conversion preferably a high rise single plane intake which can also be equipped with port or throttle body EFI, long tube headers, a shift kit and a converter in the bombproof C6 trans, swap to a 4R100 OD trans or a manual conversion and some steeper gears with a limited slip in the 9" and you have a 450-600hp monster N/A, the 351w will also make an easy 1000hp at the crank with a turbo. All in an uncommon sleeper, brougham kind of car that is very similar to if not lighter than the later Panther chassis cars. You shouldn't have much trouble running a 9s 1/4 miles off the foot brake with one and still having a comfortable a drivable cruiser that is invisible to the coppers. I believe they take 5x4.5" wheels too so, that leaves a lot of options there. Would I rather have one of the later Fox body Fairmont/Granada/LTDs/T-bird or the Mercury/Lincoln equivalent in a 2 or 4 door non-Mustang Foxes sure they're lighter, they didn't come with 351w/C6/9" though.
This video is great, Ed, and you clearly have automobile design in your blood! How about a new modernized Dodge Charger in the spirit of the 2 door classic Chargers of the late 60s & early 70s.
Please do more automation! This was quite fun to watch! And for what fictional cars you should make next, I think using the style of one company make a car that’s completely out of their market (ex: Porsche trying to make a 1970s gas guzzler, or Lamborghini trying to make a family car. Just utter chaos basically)
I love this new segment! Love it, love it, love it! The only thing I'd like to see added is an MSRP. Not that this car deserves it, but it would be nice to see a Lotus or McLaren engine option, period correct like Chevy did with the Vega. That and some faulty electrical bits to give it that true Lagonda experience. Great idea and great imagination!
I also love the safety tread on the bumpers. My suggestions are: Citroën SM and New Beetle Lincoln Versailles or second gen Seville and 1972 Peugeot 504 '64 Corvette and Shelby Daytona coupe
Bill from Curious Cars is a National Treasure and one, if not the best guy to review cars. From his Rona Whiskey to his weather forecasts and animal updates the guy is utterly amazing! I'm glad you brought him up because all us car guys need to stick together.
This was a great video by the way. I'd love to see your car history knowledge mixed in with Automation. I'm sure it'd be a unique take on car design. Since you like older cars more, what would a 70s fuel crisis Nash car look like. What if the Chevy Corvair got to see future generations, would it have become a Porsche 911 rival? What would happen if Lincoln tried to make a luxury version of the Ford GT40 of all things lol. As for modern cars, imagine if Edsel still existed, how would they fair with their big grills seeing as modern cars also have huge grills. Also a modern garbage Yugo or Trabant would be fun to see.
The Lincoln Versailles was a popular source of parts among hot rodders because they came with a 9 inch ford rear axle with factory disc brakes and limited slip differential
I love this new video idea! If you're curious for alternate-history car ideas for future videos, may I suggest the Chrysler Chronos if Mercedes-Benz had allowed it to go into production, but as a Mercedes-Benz?
This is a really fun video, I would love to see more of these! What if, instead of the Fiat 124, Lada used the BMW 2002 and modify it to suit Russian tastes?
I VERY MUCH APPRECIATE SUCH ATTEMPTS! Well done. I love your absolutely truthful admission on the end that you managed to create a rather 80's Cadillac-looking car. Perhaps if you elongated upwards the front grille (made it higher) and shrunk it from the sides (made it slimmer), it would have looked like Lincoln indeed.
I'm a fan of "what if cars" and this concept is no exception. Although I do feel like a slight tweak is needed to this format. I enjoy using Automation to bring them to life, but I feel that if you didn't record the building of it *live* it might give you more time to give the design extra attention. Maybe fill that space with sales predictions, design element choices (like you did live) or something else? IDK and I've always wondered, what would've a Cadillac van looked like? GM of course cashing in on the conversion van scene, maybe Astro based?
This is such a potential idea for a video! And let me propose my version of what if. I think it'll be interesting if you try to pull "what if a rolls royce make a cheap shitbox? What if a rolls royce was never a luxury rich-people-only car company?" Maybe it'll be fun! Great job for the video 🔥
Gotta love your imagination, Ed! Together with your grasp of American car designers lack of thought, you've created a beautiful monster for people toy with.
This series is a unique idea! I would love to see more videos in this series! Idea: What if the International Scout never went out of production and continued to evolve with the times into the 1980's or 90's?
The Lincoln Versailles gets bashed as it's just a Grenada. Looking at the metal alone, then yes true. Having driven one, you are wrong Ed on the "saddest American car." Here's what you get: 351 CID V8 (easy HP aftermarket parts) in a mid sized car, legendary Ford 9 inch rear end on the differential, factory disk breaks front and back, halogen head lights (rare for the era), factory clear coat (also rare for the era and paint job lasts and lasts) and the best part, powered leather seats that reclined waaaay back (Use your imagination there) so you could do a gangster lean. Easy to drop a 4 barrel carb and manifold to replace the factory 2 barrel carburator. It was a fun ride and a great date car.
Ed this is a great series one with endless possibilities please continue it! I have two suggestions first I'd like to see a What if Chrysler Daimler Benz happened in the late 50s or early 60s the Fin era. Second I'd love to see your take on your own vehicle. What if Hyundai made the XG350 for the American market in the 1970s.
I remember back in the 1970's, passenger side rear view mirrors were options. I thought I had the world by the ass the first car I bought that had one!😂
*Omg, that is AWESOME!* You should do more! • A 1990s 4 door MB 500SL(like the CLS) • A 1980s Fiat grandsaloon based on the Alfa 164. • A 1980s Civic Coupe Si • A 2000s Ford CountrySquire • A 1950s Cadillac Furglaine(pretty much Escalade’s Grandpa) • A 1990s Citroen XM coupe • A 2020s Saab 900 • A 1980s modern MB G-Class based on the W126. And the list could go over
And last but not least, A modern Bugatti Type 41, like a real luxurious car, pretty much like something between a S500 and a Silver Ghost and also with some 1980s Excalibur touch.
I love the idea of this series haha I'd be interested to see your own take on a 1957-1960 era Virgil Exner Chrysler Vehicle Made specifically for European markets, smaller than the regular Plymouths, Desotos, and Dodges, but still with the same signature features
Oh man! That was epic! I love this idea for future episodes. Like what if MG built an SUV? Or if the Volkswagen Cabriolet had been a hard-top convertible?...Nicely done Ed. Love the concept.
What If India Motor Corp. (like Hindustan Corp.) bring a luxurious model for its car in 1960? Is it going to be American or British model for style? Keep this series going Ed!

Hey Ed. I totally loved your video! For years I have drawn a 67 to 71 Ford Thunderbird with suicide doors and converted it into a 77 Aston Martin Lagonda. Keep converting cars!
OH DAM I got a good one for you... What if FORD actually managed to buy FERRARI and the world was waiting with anticipation for the new FORD FERRARI to hit the market. A FERRARI designed and manufactured by the FORD motor company.
Your Lincoln was very close to the engine output of my 1976 Lincoln Continental Town Car. From a 460 cid engine it produced 230hp! A measly 1/2 horse power per cubic inch. Nice software BTW!
What if… the beautiful 1990s Bentley Continental T was made into an elegant, pillarless, coachbuilt shooting brake in the style of the Lynx Eventer (based on the Jaguar XJS)?

I would love to see if the Corvair was *more* beetle-like than Falcon-like. Trying to make it American-retro. But in the 60's.
I love Mopar. I do old Mopar what-ifs and modern AMCs, Hudsons, Studebakers, etc.
The Corvair of the 1970's was supposed to look a little more like the Datsun Z cars.
this series has unlimited potential. I would like to see a luxurious Trabant, maybe based on Peugeot 504 or Jag XJS
Ah, yes, the rear bumper of a pickup makes the perfect front bumper for an Aston-Martin turned into a Lincoln.
I'm watching now, and rolling!
Maybe we need a trailer ball front and center too??? 🤣
Ed this was an absolutely amazing video concept love how you try new things lol
This is a really fun video, I would love to see more of these!
What if, instead of the Fiat 124, Lada used the BMW 2002 and modify it to suit Russian tastes?
I had something similar in mind, but instead of BMW, something american! Would be impossible in the real world
I VERY MUCH APPRECIATE SUCH ATTEMPTS!
IDK
and I've always wondered, what would've a Cadillac van looked like? GM of course cashing in on the conversion van scene, maybe Astro based?
These are great suggestions, and I'm going to reshape the format. Thanks!
This is such a potential idea for a video! And let me propose my version of what if. I think it'll be interesting if you try to pull "what if a rolls royce make a cheap shitbox? What if a rolls royce was never a luxury rich-people-only car company?"
Maybe it'll be fun! Great job for the video 🔥
What if the Mustang was an SUV right from the get go but still keeps it's muscle traits?
that could be interesting
Gotta love your imagination, Ed! Together with your grasp of American car designers lack of thought, you've created a beautiful monster for people toy with.
I always wondered what if Ford kept making the full size Bronco based on the F series chassis body on frame construction?
It would probably look like a 2-door Expedition
@@JK061996 most likely
This series is a unique idea! I would love to see more videos in this series!
Idea: What if the International Scout never went out of production and continued to evolve with the times into the 1980's or 90's?
The VW Phaëton 1960: Volkswagen turns to the British car industry for a luxury model.
I love this theory crafting on cars concept. I really liked your video on frank peiler’s cars of the 50’s and would like more.
Needs more trim on the side to be a Lincoln. Trim lines without trim were called Customs and were the least expensive.
I've always daydream of naming my own car company "Mobiler"
you nailed it. as a 90s sts owner, i loved the end result. keep these coming. automation is cool.
Love these, one of my favorite car series now! I would love to see a modern day tbird, as a competitor to the c8r corvette!
Please keep this series as a regular! This is so cool
Awesome that Bill from Curious Cars got a shoutout - most underrated review channel out there (aside from Ed of course 😉)
Nice new series Ed. But twin 4 barrels in a 70’s land yacht-no way man. 2 barrel was it unless it had a Ford 460, which had a standard 4 barrel
I got 8.19 into this and said why am I watching this!
I remember back in the 1970's, passenger side rear view mirrors were options.
I thought I had the world by the ass the first car I bought that had one!😂
*Omg, that is AWESOME!* You should do more!
• A 1990s 4 door MB 500SL(like the CLS)
• A 1980s Fiat grandsaloon based on the Alfa 164.
• A 1980s Civic Coupe Si
• A 2000s Ford CountrySquire
• A 1950s Cadillac Furglaine(pretty much Escalade’s Grandpa)
• A 1990s Citroen XM coupe
• A 2020s Saab 900
• A 1980s modern MB G-Class based on the W126.
And the list could go over
And last but not least, A modern Bugatti Type 41, like a real luxurious car, pretty much like something between a S500 and a Silver Ghost and also with some 1980s Excalibur touch.
Oh, and yes Ed you keep making those videos. I love your views of the perfect American car and your narration.
there actually was a lagonda with a ford engine for sale a while back. i wish i'd had money to buy that
I love the idea of this series haha
I'd be interested to see your own take on a 1957-1960 era Virgil Exner Chrysler Vehicle Made specifically for European markets, smaller than the regular Plymouths, Desotos, and Dodges, but still with the same signature features
5:35 I laughed super hard, that was not expected
Keep it up Ed, this series is so much fun coming from a past 1973 Lincoln Mark IV owner😀
This is a awesome series, hope to see more of it.
My what if car is. What if a American car maker made a ultra luxurious crew cab truck…in the early 50s.
yes, I want to see more, what if Opel Manta B was sold in The US under a GM brand (of your choosing) and was powered by the Iron Duke engine
I love this, I always wonder how a ultra luxury minivan would’ve been if made back in the day. Like a Cadillac dustbuster or Lincoln made Aerostar.
You can lock the fixtures to avoid moving them accidantally, it is really usefull.
This is a very nice series! I'm looking forward to see more cool cars that were never made!
I was unsure when I clicked on it, but ended up loving it! Do more!
This definitely needs to become a series!
Just awsome ando amazing kind of funny and super entertaining
You did a good job. You are so funny with your commentaries. I was indeed laughing.
What if… the beautiful 1990s Bentley Continental T was made into an elegant, pillarless, coachbuilt shooting brake in the style of the Lynx Eventer (based on the Jaguar XJS)?
This is a great idea for a series! I’d love to see a 90s car that’s been brought into 2022.
