A big question is how the Guardian managed to find three such utterly clueless people who are (apparently) incapable of decoding the slightest symbolism, have no knowledge of history, the reformation, war trauma or the history of film. Bizarre.
Its so annoying when reviewers don't talk about films for what they are and for some reason are so surprised with what they saw. Even though for a surreal film this film is no where near as surreal or bizarre as the average surreal film.
I wouldn't even regard the above video as an actual review which is a shame. Could be the absence of Xan Brooks. Going to watch it tonight, cannae wait.
Brilliant film, a totally original and compelling concept and style, which should alone win some plaudits. Apparently not from this pack of sorority sisters. Can you imagine what this little girl would make of a Samuel Beckett production? Not enough car chases and rom-com smoochie faces for her, I reckon. It's philistine "critics" like this that insure that movies will continue to suck and be targeted to 13 year olds for the foreseeable future. Thanks, Slagzilla!
I personally thought it was a masterpiece! Definitely have to watch it two or three times at least. And it also definitely helps if you have a little knowledge of the medieval (& post medieval) occult beliefs they had back then. In fact, it would/it is a touch confounding if you don't understand or have such knowledge! ie the rope tied to the person who should go on the otherworldly journey inside the 'fairy ring' of mushrooms (to help keep you anchored to the real world).Yeah, knowing a bit of that helps! And it seems that the woman reviewing it didn't really 'get it' cos of that...So, again, I personally thought it was Ben Wheatley's masterpiece. Found it much easier & more enjoyable to watch than his other films, such as Sightseers etc. Even though I enjoy those films very much too! =O)Like anything, it's not for everyone, simple as that! But I love these weird, black comedy-on-the-verge-of-horror, strange yet oddly familiar stories. What's scary about it is that our ancestors believed and lived amongst these occult practices! Some believe (& there IS compelling evidence) that we still do! It's just pushed back even further into the shadows, underground... ;O) =Op
I love that I get this film and so many don't, including the female reviewer in the video. Not because it makes me feel special, but because it makes me feel privileged. It's like being able to see the image in a stereogram when others can't. The best part is; the image you see is mind altering.
Yep - I nearly switched off when he pulled that "am-dram" BS - whether I like the film or not (I'm still chewing it over actually) the host is a prize knob.
I cant even remember what goes on in "eraser head " ? These type films are abstract and bizarre ! This film had a similar style to "Vahalla rising " I cant say I enjoyed it but at the time but afterwards it gives much thought .
Reminds me of the first time I saw the brilliant Russian Ark, and the first film student I encountered said "That was like totally boring. What was that supposed to be about? Were they like ghosts or something? I thought that was like gonna be about Vladimir Putin or something political. And the whole thing was in Russian!? How lame. That was the worst movie I've seen." I'm sure she's a studio executive now. I'm so tired of idiot "critics" bringing down the artistic level of the mainstream of cinema.
+Absolom Humblebug ....I'm sure she would have added a few more "likes" than that Absolom ...Then she'd be off for a flat white before texting her girlfriends to arrange another viewing of THE BLING RING like.....We must find a way to rid these people from the planet Absolom..... This is a wonderful film - As was Ex Machina which I saw a few months ago and two people in front of me as we exited the cinema exchanged the words " that was shit "... I believe the Hangover films are made for these types..
Oh yeah, and the soundtrack is bloody excellent too! Now rare and pricey to buy (between £50 - £150+)!!!Finally, following on from what I said below - it's a film for lovers of The Wicker Man, right down to the soundtrack. And you can imagine the population of Summer Isle carrying out the spell casting in the fashion of Michael Smiley's character!
I recorded it and just got round to watching it there. It is different. Not really sure what is going on but it does engross me and I will probably have to watch it again to see if anymore comes out in terms of symbolism or narrative
as weird as films can be - refer to alex cox's straight to hell - one man a camera and few folk willing to bugger about in a filed al day can work wonders... as for continuity - i must point out that thiose mushrooms they ate weren't of ther hallucinogenic variety and that psys or the fly would be the only two i would imbibe... maybe they were young fys???? anyhow; great film for those wjho enjoy to indulge with the disjointed, but superlative, narrative of a trip in the coherence of a few hours

welp, it's the guardian, what did you expect
To be fair I don't mind the opinion of Bradshaw. But the woman... clueless.

Are these the best people the Guardian can get to talk about this film? Please get someone who has something intelligent to say.
These are the kind of people who think Star Wars is the best film ever made

+Absolom Humblebug Russian Ark is a pretty unique film though. Field in England I have on DVD but i have heard mixed things from many people.

I thought it was more about death and domination of mind by evilI institutions (I.e Religion and Government). But I've only watched it once.
Interesting and unique film! The reviewers were rather unimpressive and unimpressed it seems !

Superb film and a fantastic director
It's about tripping.
are we trying to be tripped out now?
Another film version of "The Emperor's New Clothes." It makes no sense, it must be a Masterpiece! Gag.
It's about purgatory.

NOT ENOUGH EXPLOSIONS!!!
