** This was a request I got a little while ago. It's a metallica song, so I needed to make sure my tabs were right, and boy this one was a doozy. There are so many different interpretations of how to play this one. From what I've found, Jason uses a pick on a 6 string bass. He never touches the high C, and the low B is only used for notes that can be played on the E string. This makes it playable on a 4 string bass (like most people will use. It's sometimes hard to hear what is being played, so I tried to find some live videos (like this one: • Metallica - Sad But Tr... ) to see what Jason does. In the beginning, a lot of people slide up to the 10th fret on the D string to play that little riff, but That sounds an octave too high. Watching Jason shows that it's played an octave lower. You can see he doesn't slide up with his hand.
Also, on the track, there are two bass parts. You can hear one is dirty and one is clean. It's not super obvious that it's two separate tracks until the outro, but you can hear two bass parts there. For the outro, I've combined the two parts the best I can.
Jason uses a thick pick, the one I'm using here is about 1mm (about the same as him). I also have gotten several comments about me staring into the camera and smiling. Something about creeping people out? Well, I hope this is more to your liking, but don't expect it to continue too much. It's so hard not smiling and it's also hard not to look at the camera. There's only so many interesting things in my room or that my hands do while playing. I'm sorry this cover took so long to get out, but I hope it was worth the wait for the person that requested it.
Fun fact, I used to think James was singing "Sad Patrol" instead of "Sad But True". Also, my Megadeth shirt is the closest to Metallica that I got because they're both Thrash, and Dave Mustaine used to be in Metallica. That's All I got folks
Thanks for watching! Enjoy :)

I’m really glad you like it! Thanks for requesting it :)
@@SamboatMusicBassCovers hey bro im just learning the song now, so is the tuning D A D G
Sorry, I just saw your comment on my newest vid. I replied there, but it is DGCF for D standard.
I don’t get notifications for replies and I don’t know how to fix that. Sorry it took me so long to respond
@@SamboatMusicBassCovers thank you so much, i thought my bass sounded out of tune as i was playing with the song, thats all good and no need to Apologize
Ed Sheeran playing Metallica wearing Megadeth tshirt!
What a wonderful world to live in.
😎🤘
@@SamboatMusicBassCovers xd
Plays Metallica song
Wears Megadeth shirt
Yup. Dave Mustaine was in Metallica, so I felt it was appropriate
@@SamboatMusicBassCovers It's because of the rivality between them his comment hahaha. The D stantdard tunning is D-G-C-F?
Yup! All strings down a whole step for DGCF
Exactly what I was thinking!
and looks like david gilmour
playing the bass with a pick? Davie504 would not approve, lol. but since i am NOT Davie504, i can say awesome! +1 and like
Thank you! 🅱️ A S S
Lol love this guy's five string but only 4 string tab
@@Playlost yeah because he isnt using the b string or i guess a if its tuned down
Yeah, but it's pretty standard to play metal with a pick as far as I know. It's hard to get enough punch to not be drowned out otherwise. Well, hell, most of the time the bass is drowned out anyway. But it's still adding to the song, just harder to pick out.
Stupid ahh, he plays it like jason not davie
LEARNING MY FIRST METALLICA SONG WITH YOUR HELP MAN!
I'm glad to be of assistance :)
You are underrated dude
Thanks :) that really means a lot to me
Teaching a Metallica song wearing the Megadeath Tee is TOTALLY GOLD !!! I loooooove your humour 😂😂😂👏🏼👏🏼👌🏼✊🏼👍🏻🤌🏼🙌🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
You should play with a metronome, your timing isn’t great but you definitely have potential. 7/10
Jeff Berlin would be sad to hear you say the words “play with a metronome” 😆
Fantastic bass cover, my friend !! ♫
Thank You :)
Fun to read how you did some research to find the right bass line. I experienced the same with Highway Tune by Greta Van Fleet. Published tabs are wrong, but finding out the right riffs wasn't easy.
Sounds very good, by the way! 😎👍
Thank you! I’ve noticed that a lot of the the time published/official tabs aren’t right. They are passable, but not what you hear on the recording. It’s always interesting trying to tab out a song. Sometimes the hard ones are the easiest and the easy ones are hard
@@SamboatMusicBassCovers 100% agreed. I don't tab them out, but sometimes write down a riff, so I won't forget it. Apart from right and wrong, I sometimes like to add a riff or change a few notes. Also playing eighths instead of fourths sometimes makes more fun.
@@ThunderBassistJay Hi Jay!
@@stevebadachmusic Hi Steve! Nice to see you found Sam's channel!
Playing Metallica while wearing Megadeth. I too like to live dangerously
Brilliant work, easy to follow. Thanks for all your hard work!
My pleasure! I’m glad my videos are helpful for you :)
You look like dave mustain
great cover...and if you researched it like u said , kudos 2 u. Actually if this was heard on the album i would like BLACK album much more.
Thank You! I think there are a lot of people who would agree with you on that
Thanks a lot, really helped me out! And awesome cover as always!
Man, this is great!!!! 😎😎😎
😎 It was so hard not smiling
Forza Metallica🤘🤘🤘
You the goat bro
🐐 Thanks man!
Wow ! Wonderful performance!! I subscribe your channel and like 😉🤟🏻🎸🎶🎸🎶🎸🤟🏻
Thank you so much! :)
good job bro! this is really helpful
One of their grooviest tracks for sure
Definitely
Keep on Smiling.... Dont listen to the silly bullshit
B-E-A-D-G is Standard Tuning for Bass (5 String)
This sounds Drop Tuned A-D-G-C-F
The video notes are a.bit confusing, plz confirm.
It’s a four string tab played in D standard
Awesome! Very interesting to see and hear how this is played. Great upload!!
Thank you! I really appreciate it :)
Work on timing and will be 10/10
WTF Max Verspen playin bass :0
Hola!!! faith no more????? ¨The gentle art of making enemies¨???
I’ll add it to my list for you :)
Good Sound. You are a great Bass Player
Nice Megadeth shirt man.
I first thought “Really? His smile? Looking at the camera?” But I realize that I prefer less smiles. At least with the harder and darker lyrics.
It’s hard not to smile. I just like playing
I know you do. It shows.
Exceleteeee coveeeer. La cuerda La(A), esta afinada en Sol(G)???
Thank you! Yes, all the strings are tuned down a whole step, so the E is now a D, the A is a G, the D is a C and the G is an F
Pretty good. Watch your timing. Your string hits should be tight and in unison with the hits of the kick, snare an hi hat. It's all about feel and groove.
Hey man, nice cover, i'm trying to get into using the pick but struggle with muting, particularly the D string what's your technique ?
Love ya expression dude. keep it up
😎🤘
Just cool, keep on groovin man!!
Thank you Ray!
Amazing buddy 👍 Keep them coming :)
Thank you so much! I really appreciate it
@@SamboatMusicBassCovers most welcome :)
For a I thought Ed Sheeran was covering this. You're doing great
Great Video and great Channel! Greetings from Germany!
Brilliant! That’s a lovely bass too
Thank you! I love this bass. It’s my favorite
O M G ! its ... EPIC !
😁
I’m a super beginner so I’m having trouble reading the notes, what do you do when it’s 5 then the curved line to 0? And 3 curve line 0 etc
Those are called pull-offs. Basically you play the first note and then release to make the second note sound
🤟🏽🤟🏽 learned it in 3 days. Thanks man

Can you please do a tab for ”Hero of the day”?
Nice video!!
Thank you :)
Great job!!!
Thank You!
Honestly probably one of the easiest Metallica songs to play on bass as well as nothing else matters.
I’d agree with that. Enter Sandman is also pretty easy, and depending on how you play it, For Whom the Bell Tolls is as well
The best thing in this video is the Megadeth t shirt on a Metallica cover
Dave Mustaine FTW 🤘
😍
😁
You missed some of the best bits on the bass
I did?
10Q!
