I love how the first video Johnny is reviewing in his new place is The Super Mario Bros movie when it still felt like yesterday he reviewed SMB 1 on the NES at his old house with Elliot. So much time has passed and Johnny’s still so awesome and comforting to listen to ❤
He reminds me of an old family friend. The type that even though time has passed the friendship and respect stays exactly the same. Plus he actually looks like some of my family members lol
Miyamoto's involvement in this movie is honestly what helped me accept a lot of the weirder choices in this movie, like partnering with Illumination and finding new voice actors. I like the mental image of Miyamoto watching Pineapple Express in his living room and thinking "Yes, this is the perfect Donkey Kong"
@Vizionary Entertainment Oh fr? Personally, I love their animation style. It's so bouncy, but never overdone. And so fluid. It's IMO their best attribute aside from great character designs--Mario and crew's redesigns are so welcome in my book
I actually like how Peach wasn’t the one that needed rescuing. But I think it woulda been better if Luigi somehow broke out on his own, had his own crazy adventure and have them all meet up around the midpoint. Then all there could come up with a plan to fight Bowser.
That's what I was thinking too. Luigi barely got any screen time despite his name being in the Movie's title, so giving him a little subplot of his own would've been sweet. Maybe he tries to get out of the cage and frees the prisoners as they roam around the airship looking for an escape, while he learns to get over his fears and anxieties. Bit of a missed opportunity don't you think, Mr Fogel?
Y'know what this feels like? This movie feels like the extended pilot episode for a TV series. And if I'm being honest, I kinda feel like that's where it should go from here. I would totally be on board for a modern revival of the Super Mario Bros Super Show.
They got a good number of assets ready to go, why not? I could see some slice-of-life plots like Princess Peach going on an epic adventure to gather rare ingredients for a super-special cake or an adaptation of Luigi's Mansion where Luigi meets E. Gadd and starts his now-famous side career as a ghost hunter.
@@bcrossfire1219I have some more ideas: 1. Princess Peach diving under the ocean to befriend a vicious Maw-Ray, showcasing her friend-to-all-living-things demeanor. 2. Bowser having to share a neighborhood with Donkey Kong, with the Kongs interrupting his plans with their partying. 3. Wario and Waluigi making prank calls against Peach, and later Bowser, King Bob-omb and King Boo, incurring the latter three’s wrath.
The pacing was break-neck speed as if we were also in a kart. That said, the final sequence of Mario and Luigi felt straight up like a Bros advance move from Superstar Saga and I appreciate that. Overall I liked it, it's a nice inoffensive movie.
As someone who is passionate about Mario, this movie felt like it was made for me. It's on the safe side, but it really feels like the film truly prioritized "Mario fans" over any other audience type, and I can't help but love that.
@@TommyDeonauthsArchives I personally don't agree at all DP was prioritized for Pokemon fans. It felt very much like it was trying to capture a new audience.
For me, I loved it so much. Chris Pratt voice is now how I imagine mario. I know it's weird but he did so good. Plus, the way they made peach a "girl boss" actually worked since they did it right. She was confident, strong, and true leader. But she never belittled mario instead she rooted for him,was there for him, and wanted him to succeed. Thier chemistry was so sweet, and I loved the small flirting between them.
I don't understand why people crack on her girl boss personality... i don't understand cause SHE'S A PRINCESS. she rules a Kingdom, its her job. And if ya read the Nintendo Comics she can hold her own if she wanted too. She just chills out and let's mario be a hero.
I blame the games. They probably gave the image of a leader who's weak and reliant on her hero all the time, so that's what people just believe Peach's character amounts to. So when they see her in the movie, it's not what they expect and think it's an attempt at making her "woke" or whatever that means.
I get liking her personality, but she literally belittled him at the start, even though it was a pretty unnecessary comment (and odd, seeing powerups make that issue moot).
@@WindyREDPanda You're right. However I understand why some people had an issue with Peach being a "girl boss" at first and it's not hard to know why. The modern Hollywood tread of elevating female characters into overpowered, obnoxious Mary-Sues who can do everything men can do but better is pretty well known at this point. But with Princess Peach, Nintendo and Illumination actually handled her pretty well.👍🏻
Some things like Peach’s true origin I feel are intentional breadcrumbs that are teased and established, but could be expounded on more in the future (a good example is like Po’s adoption in Kung Fu Panda. It was hinted at, and was even made into a subversive joke, but never answered. But that’s what the sequel was all about.) It’s a tease about her character, but not really important to the focus of the first movie. As for Mario wanting to make something of himself, I mean…he did. He just wanted to not be treated like a joke from everyone. Mario even brings this up a few times throughout the movie, even when in the Mushroom Kingdom. It didn’t HAVE to be about plumbing, that’s just what they know best. Mario wanted to “save Brooklyn”, at first he meant through solving the flood issue, but at the end, he realized he could do it for real. And that’s what he did, and everyone cheered for him and Luigi, including their dad. It wasn’t dropped, it was accomplished in a different way.
Overall I think it was a good movie. The characters were represented well, the music was great, it was vibrant and colorful, and it had plenty of nice references for Nintendo fans. The pacing did feel rather off however
I'm so glad that you said that you wanted more character moments, because every other positive review basically boils down to "It's a mario movie! It doesn't have to have character, it just needs to be a fun romp!" And i agree it doesn't need an epic story every time, tho Mario itself is no stranger to actually getting a cool, engaging story from time to time, it does need character, it needs more character moments, especially because this is a movie and not a game, where any character moments aren't necessarily needed as long as you have good gameplay.
Hey, for years now I've stopped by your channel frequently to listen to the Super Sponge uploads (GBA versions as well because that's what I grew up with). Thank you for those, and it's cool seeing you here. I hope Nintendo/Illumination improve upon what you mentioned in the sequel.
Definitely felt a big budget version of the super show, especially with the use of license music in the film, and in that aspect it was pretty enjoyable for me .
This and sonic 2 are tied for my favourite video game movie. They are both great in different ways. Sonic 2 is able to have great story telling with action, while staying true to the characters. This film is a feel good film, entertaining in its own right, filled with clever and unique references, and is beautiful to look at. It doesn't take itself seriously, but it doesn't need to. It's got the characters nailed almost perfectly. And who can forget, Jack black singing peaches
Yeah their a RUclips video on Jack Black doing the peaches it a short live action version. Seeing Jack Black in a Bowser look like a suit in a pink room with a pink piano.
I thought Sonic 1 was the superior Sonic film mainly because the subplot in S2 with the undercover agent marrying the obnoxious Rachael was COMPLETELY unnecessary. And every time Rachael was on screen I'd catch a headache. However, getting to see Super Sonic fight Robotnic ALMOST made up for it.
@Samuel (The Pride of Afrika) Robinson I despise that pointless side plot as well. The only payoff was learning about G.U.N and teasing the third movie. Otherwise it could've been cut entirely. I like sonic 2 more cos it feels more like a sonic movie, aside from that pointless bit
I honestly loved the segment where Luigi barricaded himself in that little castle. I don’t know why, but I immediately thought “Ok. Whose gonna make the Nacht der Untoten mod where Luigi is fighting off Dry Bones and Shy Guys?”
The movie was a lot better than I expected. There were some plot threads that didn't go anywhere and it really needed to slow down, but it was still really enjoyable, and I do hope the next one is a bit longer, because it needed a good 10 minutes to flesh out even some of the ideas it had.
Wish more people talked about the Banzai Bill scene. That scared the shit out of me when it homed in on Mario at that speed. Like I remember these things not being that much a threat in the games honestly, but seeing one chase Mario down like that was horrifying!
@@liamphibia Not sure if that was intentional or what. Though it wouldn't surprise me if the writers changed it because of how "Banzai" was used in WW2 and it might "offend" people.
One of the things that surprised me most about this movie was just how much voice work came from Teen Titans. Like, Trigon as Kamek, Cyborg as the Penguin King, and _especially_ Robin as the Koopa General had me floored.
Makes sense considering the guys who directed the movie are literally the Teen Titans Go guys. They've been working with the Teen Titans voice actors for a decade now. Huge step up for them in my opinion. I think they nailed this film.
Straight up the best movie Illumination has made by a country mile. Went to see this movie with friends, we already had decent/high hopes but it blew our expectations out of the water.
it's more logical since it's Luigi who's been kidnapped rather than peach who just met, and their brotherhood that will make Mario do whatever it takes to save Luigi.
My biggest issue with the Mario movie is that it feels like it's more focused on referencing the games rather than making a movie. It's a cool movie, but I'd rate it on the same level as the first Sonic movie, but for different reasons. 7/10, I look forward to the sequel
It's SO weird that Mario, voice acted by Christopher Pratt, turned to the audience and said "Did you KNOW that Super Mario Bros. 2: Mario's Madness for the Nintendo Entertainment System is ACTUALLY Doki Doki Panic for the Famicom Disk System in Japan?" Then presented to stare at the audience for 15 seconds, until he snapped back to his happy-go-lucky self. Really strange moment in a other wise good movie.
Basically my stance as well. Really more like a proof of concept if anything. It did look good. But it isn’t really backed by much substance. They definitely left a bunch on the cutting room floor.
It's essentially not even a movie its a 90 minute commercial for the Video Game franchise which is why Critics hated it. There is No plot at least the 90s Mario Bros movie had an actual story was live action had a budget and ambition this Overrated "Movie" Does not which is why the Sonic movies are better.
On the topic of Peach, I would not mind at all if she remained the classic damsel in distress but how she is portrayed in the movie is fine by me only because it's something I have actually seen before. In the official Nintendo Power Super Mario Adventures manga, she was actively doing things and fighting back when she could and in Super Mario 3D Land, they show throughout the game how she fought tooth and nail to escape DESPITE getting kidnapped.
Peach is always more interesting than when she's JUST the damsel in distress, the old Paper Mario games are proof. Also at this point movie Peach becoming JUST the damsel in distress(since they're making a sequel) would be more of a detriment to her as it'd be done ONLY cause some people weren't happy with her character in the movie.
Also speaking of the Manga, there were times where she saved Mario from being kidnapped if I remember correctly. So in a way movie Peach is more like manga Peach than the game version.
@@solidneptune6423 Well see, I'd have preferred if she started out a damsel in this first film so her character would have more room for growth in sequels. It would be like "Okay, so now we know the princess _could_ be kidnapped if we're not careful, let's start training her on how to better defend herself" and then, in the sequel, we see she's practicing her skills and jumping into the action more herself. But, since she's already an all-star athlete, she's either going to stay ahead of Mario in the sequel, thereby causing his own achievements to feel downplayed in comparison; stagnate as he catches up and possibly surpasses her; or end up falling from that lofty action girl perch altogether. Starting her ahead of the guy in the title may ultimately do more harm to her arc than good.
For what little time each environment had on screen, the sheer amount of visual depth each one had almost forces you to wonder just what lies beyond the frame in each shot. It honestly does a really good job at keeping you engrossed in the settings the characters are in, until the 4th boomer jam in a row comes on and oops suddenly you're reminded you're sitting in a movie theater
Me a grown ass man am seriously watching another grown ass man talk about a kids movie based on a 30 year old video game franchise and I don’t regret a second of it
If there is a second movie, I hope their is a bigger focus on character. I think Luigi's Mansion would be a good theme to draw from. It would give Luigi a chance to be the hero, while having a second chance to expand and build on the brother's relationship and give a potentially deeper hero arc.
I think for all intents and purposes this film is very much a "Starting Point" for Nintendo actually making a genuine effort into the Movie world. Video game movies were always talked about in a Negative light until the Sonic movies started coming out. So this was still very much a risk. I'm 100% fine for them playing it safe here to just make a solid entertaining movie. Just to show that, yes, we can make something great.
I honestly enjoyed this movie! It's definitely a breezy movie (both to its detriment and its benefit) and it could have used a bit more runtime to flesh out some stuff for the characters but it was fun! And the animation is gorgeous!
3:28 Don't worry Johnny you're not the only one who felt a missed opportunity involving Donkey Kong, I was hoping Donkey Kong would say 'Banana Slamma' IDK why but I just love that cheesy catchphrase.
This was definitely the best theater experience I’ve ever had. A bunch of my friends and I went to see it, a couple of us in suits, and we were just screaming at every little reference and Easter egg, such a fun time.
Fun Fact: The Reason Nintendo went with Illumination it's because Chris Meledandri CEO of illumination wanted showcase how they can make an animated movie of Super Mario Look Visually pleasing with a Low Budget without Going so high to Pixar and Disney level of animated movie budgets
The Super Mario Bros. Movie may just be the most faithful video game movie I have ever seen, which was certainly helped by the film being directed by fans of the franchise working alongside Nintendo (with Shigeru Miyamoto producing).
While I do feel like as an actual movie, it's pretty basic... As a Mario movie, it's pretty great! There was so much love and passion put into it that I have to admire. Even though the story is about as generic as a typical Mario game, all the little easter eggs and secrets in the film are so enjoyable, it's essentially a game in and of itself to find as many as you can!
It's the kind of movie you'd watch with friends, family or fellow fans. Can't say that's necessarily a bad thing but it's the definition of a popcorn movie.
I'm glad they refrained from making Peach the typical damsel in distress, and instead gave the "captured" role to Luigi. It makes the stakes more personal as a brother wanting to save his family instead of a random person he just met. In fact the only reason Mario even asked to join Peach on her journey was to rescue Luigi. *Also Ice Flower Peach looks eerily similar to Elsa from Frozen, and no I won't be swayed otherwise.*
Ice Flower Peach felt to me like Nintendo looking Disney straight in the eyes saying, "Oh, you thought you owned the export of princesses with ice powers?"
Three things: One, the "Take on me" song playing was my fav among the licensed songs in this movie... Two, they did a bit in the background while Mario was walking pass some Toad markets. Two toads were talking about old game cartrages and how you'd blow into them to get them to work properly. I got a laugh out of that, cuz nostalgia... Three, Mario going through the training grounds reminded me of how I'd did the same thing. Fail, try again, fail, try again, fail, try again, and repeat. Again more nostalgia, and I love it...
It really felt like each scene had at least 30 seconds edited out. like that breakneck pace really didn't need to be like that for it to still be engaging
I went to see this movie with my brother, father, and nephew, and I will say that this movie is still great for just a fun movie to watch. During the movie I felt that the pace could've been waaay better, but I still had fun with the movie especially with trying to see all the references. I do hope the next movie will be as fun or even better!
Frickin loved this movie and seeing it again this weekend. Mario's love for his brother is really shown throughout the movie, Bowser's a big mix of funny and terrifying, and Peach is capable enough to not fall into being OP. The guy who made that hour long negative review and then changed the title to save face can kick rocks.
The thing is, Mario and Luigi had just met Princess Peach and Bowser, respectively, in the movie, so if Peach and Luigi swapped roles as the DiD, Mario has very little reason to save her
I will return once I have seen the film, but I'm so glad against all odds and doubts, from Illumination's reputation to the casting being laughed at (by myself included) that this ended up being a enjoyable film from what I've heard by word of mouth. Let's hope we see more Nintendo movies in the future. I'd love a Kirby or Metroid film.
I quite enjoyed watching this movie. Had a smile on my face and laughed through a good chunk of it. Granted I’ve played a few of the games over the years so I may have a biased. My favorite scene being the part at the end with star. The only part I found “disappointing” is that they didn’t really do anything with the kong army. After rainbow road they were just left as bowser’s prisoners. Even after DK freed them they kinda just disappeared. Would’ve been nice to see them clash against bowser’s koopas.
13:56 Miyamoto has stated many times in the past that he always looked at Mario as a "young guy about 24-25 years old." It's important to remember Miyamoto was a producer on the movie and had a ton of involvement in the production. I'd say Mario's depiction is quite accurate to Miyamoto's own idea of Mario. You see that in his depiction of DK too, who's more funny and comedic.
Seeing the Patron roll at the end...people love ya so much Jon! You are worth every one of those! Keep it up Brother we are with you! Just as Mario in the movie said "we are strongest when we are together" We all feel that! Love ya Jon!
I agree that this movie certainly needed more time on certain moments like the beginning in Brooklyn and Peach's backstory some more but this movie still was an enjoyable time. I'm eager for whatever movies Nintendo produces next now that we got this under the belt.
I'd personally rank Sonic 2 over this as far as movies go. That's not to say Mario doesn't have its advantages like a much more faithful soundtrack but I honestly found Sonic 2's writing more compelling.
Hey Johnny just wanted to say thank you for the amazing content! I’ve been watching you since you’re original 3d Sonic reviews that you deleted. You’re amazing! keep up being you
As odd as the licence tracks were, i realize the choice of what they picked made a little sence since their 80s songs. But it's so big budget animated movie tropey
My only opinion is that while Peach is a good character in the movie, it would work better if she was captured because that'd allow her to bounce off with Bowser via dialogue. Luigi suffers because they didn't really utilize him. He works but... Eh?
That brief flash back kind of told the whole story really. Peach as a young toddler walked through a pipe whether from NY or not, ended up in the Mushroom kingdom.
I greatly enjoyed the mario movie while yes it doesn't have a big deep plot or much character development but it was like the games a fun adventure and thats what I think a mario film really needed to be, the amount of loyalty to the source material and references really got me smiling throughout. Overall I thought the film was a really good time and I highly recommend for newcomers and veterans of the franchise I'm sure they will enjoy themselves.
I liked this movie more than the Sonic movies for two major reasons. It didn't have any eye roll moments that compared to The Dance off or Bridezilla in Sonic 2, and this movie did not feel ashamed of the video game roots. I really enjoy the idea that the platforming obstacles in the games are literally how the toads get around the city on their day to day. I also enjoy animated movies way more than live action so that's always a plus.
My god the soundtrack for this movie. Peaches being a funny ass suprise, the Mario brothers rap tickling my nostalgia and oh my god the fully orchestrated “level complete” had my jaw on the floor
I also 100% agree that, aside from the obvious Jack Black (who steals the show in everything he appears in) as Bowser that Charlie Day as Luigi was perfect and was a standout performance in this. Literally the second the movie ended, I said "We need a Charlie Day Luigi's Mansion film, NOW". Imagine how good that would be. The kind of hijinx we would expect from a Luigi's Mansion movie would be a perfect fit for Charlie Day, and that's on top of the performance already being good.
Absolutely loved the movie. The animation, voice acting, and designs where really damn good. Glad Nintendo made the choice to be actively involved in the development in the film along with Miyamoto co-producing it. Illumination did a great job imo but for Chris, I think he did a great job as Mario- very Brooklyn and I appreciate it. Peach was my favorite part of the movie and Anya did a great job too
this movie is probably my favorite movie ever due to how much mario has impacted my life as a whole, while it does have flaws and honestly no movie is truly perfect, its a movie that means alot to me personally
Among the several side plots that end up going nowhere, we spend a big scene showing Mario training to use the Super Mushroom, and then he proceeds to not really use it afterwards. I figured there would be at least one moment where a Super Mushroom would come in clutch like "Ah! I know how to use this one!" during a dire moment, but no, I think it does get used later but it isn't given any emphasis.
My EXACT feelings. The next one needs some proper character growth moments, and needs to earn their emotional moments. Movie was decent over all, and there's nothing wrong with it the sequel couldn't fix.
I share pretty similar thoughts. If there is one thing I'd like to add is near the beginning when Mario finds the area with the warp pipe below Brookyln, he says "It seems like nobody has been here for years", while there is a lit lightbulb behind him...
I disagree with the damsel assessment. Peach needed to both meet and spend time with Mario for it to naturally fit she'd go on to respect and trust in his ability, while Luigi is the most natural character to get kidnapped for an origin story like this. Two brothers got isekai-ed together, one gets to go on an adventure and see the good guy's side of the world while the other gets to be the perspective we follow for the bad guy's side of this "unfamiliar" world. Plus it's framed as the first time Bowser has made a military advancement to force Peach's hand (in marriage), so having the end objective be simply reaching her was a smart move. In a sequel I totally do want to see Peach in the Paper Mario 64/TYD type of situation, though, don't get me wrong. I'll be very surprised if this movie wasn't developed with future content related to it already being worked on in tandem. Too many of the threads that get glossed over as the scenes fly by seem like intentional loose ends as opposed to simply abandoned. Or, at least, we can hope as much. I'm a bit skeptical of if or not Miyamoto is still a trustworthy steward of his creations, or if he's went the way of Lucus, having his seniority destroy the positive influences of collaboration that made older releases special. Of course, no way to be sure who's responsible for the Sticker-Star-ing of certain elements of the franchise(s) of late, since Nintendo is not known for its transparency in certain areas. Maybe we're in a positive upturn again for the end products now, hard to say for sure.
I've said this a few times with people and I think it rings true still: this movie is perfect comfort food. It's not really deep or game changing, but it's not trying to be that. It just wants to try and give you a fun time and make you feel good watching it. And personally speaking I think it excels at that wonderfully. I loved watching this movie because it gave me (for the most part) exactly what I want out of a Mario movie. Could it have used more time to develop certain scenes or characters? Oh, absolutely. But the rest of the film is just so infectiously fun that I can't bring myself to really stay mad at this film. Also I cannot thank you enough for using the Paper Mario comparison because that's exactly my thoughts on Peach: she's definitely capable of being a proactive character, but I'd like it if she was more *in* character, if that makes sense. And it's shame for a movie that otherwise has such a solid grasp on the core and essence of every character it portrays. The Mario & Luigi brother dynamic was hands down my favorite part of the movie, and after years of those tired parodies painting Mario as a horrible brother, this was an honest to God blessing to see them truly love and care for each other.
Also I like how Paper Mario was mentioned in this video, and TTYD footage was shown which brings me to ask Mr. EveryoneCallsyouJohnny if a Paper Mario marathon + Mario & Luigi marathon is in the cards in the future.
I remember when the second Mario Marathon was when I had started college 😱 now I’m in my apartment, with my partner, 3 years into my career, and STILL watching Johnny videos haha
Catching the movie on opening day was probably the first time I've ever seen a movie that quickly. My lifelong attachment to Mario World and All-Stars warranted it.
While the pacing was fast and there were moments where could’ve taken some time to explain/explore stuff. I enjoyed the movie, and had plenty of chuckles and could spot quite a few references. It did great and I think this is the step in the right direction for Nintendo, even if not another mario Movie we have so many other viable Nintendo IP’s to which a movie could be made. Imagine a Metroid movie similar to Derricks sketches. One that shows Samus starting off.
Great to see you're doing movies again John! The art looks incredibly cool but for some reason I dig the thumbnail you went for in the Sonic 2 movie. Idk, just the real Johnny hits different yknow? Lol
I thought it was very average. No risks taken. They included all the fan service they could. Enjoyable, but they was scared to push a narrative. We want a story.
As an 80s baby, I was taken on a nostalgia filled sugar rush. Hearing the original live action Luigi as their uncle was dope. Seeing Spyke from Wrecking Crew. Punch Out Pizzeria with the Jump Man arcade game. Mario playing Kid Icarus. Hear old music. It all sparked joy. As soon as they mentioned meeting the Kong king, I instantly thought "Please don't be Cranky... It's going to be Cranky..." My young daughter, the franchise's current target, was riding a "recent relevancy" high. She lost it seeing stuff the giant moray, the catsuit, the funny little sound Shy Guys make. The instant she saw the Paratroopa captain she was like "That guy's gonna blow someone up!" And when it happened she squealed the squeal of pure childhood bliss.
It's kind of novel that a movie advertising what it sets out to do does it's job so well and gives the viewer exactly what they expect in such high quality. It's one of those movies where while it doesn't break any ground, that it's quality just by doing exactly what it wants to do with pinpoint accuracy.
I find it great that they acknowledge the Mario rap, The one song we all thought that Nintendo would not acknowledge and they exactly did just that, I was absolutely pleased that they included the Mario Rap and that's a thumps up for me.
I was smiling from start to finish. It really felt like a love letter to the entire series. The animation also was gorgeous. Bowser was standout he got several really good laughs from me. I hope this is the start of the NCU lol
This could easily be my film of the year. I am fully aware that it relied heavily on video game nostalgia, and I am more than okay with that because I had something that I don't have at the movies that often anymore: FUN🤩 Not every movie needs to be Endgame levels of acting and storytelling
As a big DK 64 fan, i jumped from my seat with a huge smile on my face when i heard the DK rap, about to shed a tear from the excitement and out of the blue we got a scene with Diddy, Dixie and Chunky going full bananas for Dk in the crowd, my jaw dropped so hard. That game was my childhood, and that part of the movie made my whole weekend better :')
i honestly loved every minute of the movie there's just one thing i wish they had done and that's make a background character in Brooklyn that had a picture of baby peach like her father has been desperately looking for her all this time make a little meta thing
It did leave me wanting. Wanting to see it again which I did this past Thursday. This was incredible. Honestly, despite how fast it was, it was still great.
Me and my brother got to see it in Dolby Cinema at our local theater, with Mario and Luigi hats on, and we couldn't stop geeking out at those references and Easter eggs! It's nothing new but the plumbers are on the screen doing stuff and that's what we got, a super time!

That would be AMAZING! Especially if you get Chris Pratt and Charlie Day to do the live-action segments!
@@bcrossfire1219I have some more ideas:
Detective Pikachu kinda felt prioritized for Pokémon fans and it didn't need to go at a break neck speed...
@@lucasmartinez5703 yeah she always have too be rescued in the games so it was good too see something different for a change
I get liking her personality, but she literally belittled him at the start, even though it was a pretty unnecessary comment (and odd, seeing powerups make that issue moot).
@@WindyREDPanda
You're right.
But that’s what the sequel was all about.)
It’s a tease about her character, but not really important to the focus of the first movie.
The pacing did feel rather off however
I agree
They were speedrunning the fuck out that movie
@@jekyll.1968it got the job but damn we barely spend that much time in an environment.
@@jekyll.1968 Is that a Mario 64 Speedrun reference?

Imagine if they got Michael Jackson’s Bad playing in this movie just like in the Super Show
I can't see your name and not think "Junge of the Georgle."
13:56 according to Nintendo, Mario and Luigi are canonically 25 years old
This and sonic 2 are tied for my favourite video game movie.
Now that would be epic
The movie was a lot better than I expected. There were some plot threads that didn't go anywhere and it really needed to slow down, but it was still really enjoyable, and I do hope the next one is a bit longer, because it needed a good 10 minutes to flesh out even some of the ideas it had.
Wish more people talked about the Banzai Bill scene. That scared the shit out of me when it homed in on Mario at that speed. Like I remember these things not being that much a threat in the games honestly, but seeing one chase Mario down like that was horrifying!
Bowser called it a Bomber Bill. Ha, makes sense since he's not good at knowing most of his minions names! 😂
@@liamphibia Not sure if that was intentional or what. Though it wouldn't surprise me if the writers changed it because of how "Banzai" was used in WW2 and it might "offend" people.
@liamphibian3697 Didn't they actually called Banzai Bill " Bomber Bill " in the Super Mario World cartoon?
It reminds me of Johnny in his SNW review, his words "Christ can they make them any bigger?" *SMASH CUT TO NEW SMB* "$H!T $H!T $H!T"
You could make an arguement that Despicable Me 1 is better but this movie was still fire af.
Despicable me 1 and 2 are still pretty good films imo. But this film beats them for me
@@majesticmo5048 u know I tie the Mario Bros with Sonic 2 (Ps I love Despicable ME)
nah, despicable me 1 AKA the only good illumination movie is probably better.
dude this movie is a glorified commercial
it's more logical since it's Luigi who's been kidnapped rather than peach who just met, and their brotherhood that will make Mario do whatever it takes to save Luigi.
My biggest issue with the Mario movie is that it feels like it's more focused on referencing the games rather than making a movie. It's a cool movie, but I'd rate it on the same level as the first Sonic movie, but for different reasons. 7/10, I look forward to the sequel
The Sonic movies suck ass and are nothing more than furry bait with a boring plot and boring jokes.
It's SO weird that Mario, voice acted by Christopher Pratt, turned to the audience and said "Did you KNOW that Super Mario Bros. 2: Mario's Madness for the Nintendo Entertainment System is ACTUALLY Doki Doki Panic for the Famicom Disk System in Japan?"
Then presented to stare at the audience for 15 seconds, until he snapped back to his happy-go-lucky self.
Really strange moment in a other wise good movie.
so basically it did the opposite of what sonic 1 did
Basically my stance as well.
Not to mention, she had some heroic moments in the DiC shows--the SMB3 cartoon specifically.
@@bcrossfire1219 Hopefully that doesn't happen, cause you're right that would do more harm than good if not handled well.
Yes give my buddy more EVERYTHING HELL GIVE HIM HIS OWN MOVIE OR TWO
I think for all intents and purposes this film is very much a "Starting Point" for Nintendo actually making a genuine effort into the Movie world.
Video game movies were always talked about in a Negative light until the Sonic movies started coming out. So this was still very much a risk. I'm 100% fine for them playing it safe here to just make a solid entertaining movie. Just to show that, yes, we can make something great.
I mean I think dectective Pikachu did a good job honestly
@@princesscrystal6410 Oh yeah Detective Pikachu too, it came out around the same time as Sonic 1 Movie.
I love that the Bowser portrayed in the movie was so similar to the Paper Mario Bowser in ridiculousness.
Three things:
One, the "Take on me" song playing was my fav among the licensed songs in this movie...
14:10 I think they're going with the "Mario is 24" angle that Miyamoto said one time. They definatly don't feel like they're in their 30s anyway haha.
There’s going to be a sequel, there’s an entire happy Luma wanting the sweet release of death, hinting at a Super Mario Galaxy movie
The moment the “Bowsers Fury Theme” hit while panning over Bowsers forces was too perfect…!
Ah the final pains of moving, unpacking and getting everything set. Glad your move went well for ya!
Eh?
1:35 OMG it's "Welcome to Yoster Island" by Soichi Noriki!! Loved that song 😊
13:57
Mario is in his early to mid 20s, not mid to late 30s.
Nintendo still salty they didn’t bought Rare in the 2000’s
Bowser in this movie is exactly how he acts in the Mario and Luigi RPG’s and I love it
I share pretty similar thoughts.
Johnny just sneakily showing off those dark magician girl card sleeves when showing the question block lamp
Nah nah nah nah nah. The first Despicable Me movie was solid. everything afterwards not so much, but D.E.1 Was pretty good
I've said this a few times with people and I think it rings true still: this movie is perfect comfort food.
Honestly the movie had me tearing up with joy by the end because of how good everything was especially the music.
1:35 missed chance to start off the first video from your new place with “reaching far across these new frontiers”
Mario isn’t in his mid to late 30s. Nintendo stated Mario and Luigi are in their early 20s
Great to see you're doing movies again John! The art looks incredibly cool but for some reason I dig the thumbnail you went for in the Sonic 2 movie. Idk, just the real Johnny hits different yknow? Lol
Some days. I come watch these videos not for the review itself, but to see what kind of person gets roasted in Johnny's ad. It's truly life giving
It's going to be Cranky..."
My young daughter, the franchise's current target, was riding a "recent relevancy" high.
I was surprised to no end, that they pushed hard on Mario‘s Brooklynite heritage
I was smiling from start to finish. It really felt like a love letter to the entire series. The animation also was gorgeous. Bowser was standout he got several really good laughs from me. I hope this is the start of the NCU lol
This could easily be my film of the year.
I am fully aware that it relied heavily on video game nostalgia, and I am more than okay with that because I had something that I don't have at the movies that often anymore: FUN🤩
Not every movie needs to be Endgame levels of acting and storytelling
People seem to forget that Mario is from the 1980's when games had little to no plot. Sonic had multiple stories, Adventure series, SATAM, etc.
Satoru Iwata: video games are all but one thing. Fun. Fun for everyone
His legacy will live forever in this movie
>Endgame levels of acting and storytelling
>Martin Scorsese weeps in the corner
11:01 Missed opportunity. It should have been Coldplay’s Adventure of a Lifetime lol.
14:26 and it’s the Mario movie, not the Peach movie, don’t go all Looper on us.
Glad to see you made it to the new place. And as far as the Mario Bros 2 for 1993... it ended on a hiatus the last I checked.
I love that you uploaded this while was walking to see this movie
10:50: I feel like the licensed music should've been used for scenes in Brooklyn to emphasize the differences between Earth and the Mushroom Kingdom.
I love this movie so much. I would love a Nintendo cinematic universe
Kinda wanna see a Luigi’s Mansion & Donkey Kong movie now
Will you be doing a Mario revisit marathon like you did for Sonic?
Most of watching the movie with your friends is a game of who caught more references from the videogames.
i honestly loved every minute of the movie there's just one thing i wish they had done and that's make a background character in Brooklyn that had a picture of baby peach like her father has been desperately looking for her all this time make a little meta thing
It did leave me wanting. Wanting to see it again which I did this past Thursday. This was incredible. Honestly, despite how fast it was, it was still great.
