Me and my best friend cammed a 1999 firebird 3.8 v6 in highschool ported an polished heads we went in on it 50/50 that car made 375 horse and did a 12 second 1/4 mile trans am doors and hood it was a fucking beast miss those days I'm 22 now full time mechanic him as well would like to do another one if we can find one that's worth it we ran 93 in ours it looked like crazy
would love to pick your brain for information about that car. I have a 2000 3.8 camaro and want to do the same. How tough was it to cam and port and polish the heads? Think i could do it by myself?
Ive owned a lot of 3.8,3.4's,3.1 and 2.8s. (No 3.3 or 3.5etc.) I feel like the OBDII ECU's fall pull far too much timing on hot days. I can vaguely remember driving incredibly conservative, on most days, leaving me good for mabye 1 WOT run. Cold nights are the exception.
That v6 is no joke! Im thinking of buying a V6 firebird found one for $800 blown head gasket I already have a 99 trans am with a built motor and wanted to do something different.
This is Lubbock right I love right down the street just bought me a firebird 3.8 today maybe I'll swing by and see what's going on and get some pointers about the car

Warshrike, if you could only do one major mod to a 2002 Firebird 3800 series 2 engine to gain the most hp/tq "off the line" like a roots blower, what would it be? Cam and related mods or something eles?
If you have an auto, a good torque converter (I had a Super Street Fighter TCI 3800 rpm stall) and a cam help a lot. A roots blower will have limits on our engines, but it will definitely offer a ton of low end torque. You of course have a lot of fab work ahead of you for that. A smaller turbo would work as well, but you don't want to load the cylinders up too early, these things like to push coolant haha. Easiest is weight reduction. I think one member ran bottom 13s with solid weight reduction, stock motor, 5 speed manual and 4.10s.
I would turn the speedo back to zero all the time in 01 on my way to work in yosemite.. n/a it pulled 240whp after headers back, MAS and throttle body swap, RAM air mapping, clutch ect... my 03 monte carlo with almost same set up and after mapping was almost the same but was automatic and it never hit like the 5 speed. I would kill for my monte carlo to be a rear wheel 5 speed.
Stainless longtube headers by Force Fed Fabs, they are like 1 of 10 made. The rest is Kooks true duals, 3" all the way through w/ high flow cats. I'd recommend a Hooker blackheart 2.5" and maybe some pacesetter headers. Youll need to have an exhaust shop connect the two as there's not a cut and dry true dual kit.
Big valve race ported heads from some shop in Michigan that used to do Grand Nationals. The cam has alot of duration so it bleeds off the compression. Still runs great on 91, would like to see what it makes on E85.
I’m sorry but 250hp is not impressive and just made me dislike firebirds considering yours A sounds amazing and B has a considerable amount of work done to it…I’d be proud of it if I was you I’m just looking for more hp
You won't see more power than that without going forced induction. Best of luck. Its making 80hp and tq over what it made stock, if gm designed the heads with a more optimal port design it'd definitely be more.
@Corban Norman it’s better than the ford 3.8 v6 it was 145 hp 95 model and then 193 hp that’s 02 and then old tbirds 3.8 v6 supercharged v6s we’re 210 hp so yeah chevy did good considering the year
Man, bravo for building an amazing car and keep the motor alive. Where in TX are you? I have been trying to start a build like this but haven't been able to. I have also decided to do an L67 stroker. What's the full build list?
First step, E85 conversion/re-tune and also install a different intake manifold. After that, finish the road race suspension setup (UMI Coilovers w/ some new offerings from Strano), then turbos.
WarShrike for E 85 it just requires 20% more fuel, I. E. Bigger injectors and the tune. Have you looked into umi's new street springs with konis ? Or full tubular front end? What sway bars are you running?
Yeah, the 36lb/hr injectors don't have enough headroom, will be upgrading to ZL1 injectors. I already have an upgraded AEM fuel pump that is Ethanol compatible. I already have Strano Springs, konis, swaybars and a tubular k-member with boxed front A-arms and adjustable upper control arms.
I know this is unrelated to this video, but somewhere I believe I read that you managed to get a T56 6 speed into this with that 3800 V6. I was curious as to what you had to do to make it work?
Mal wood adapter plate, a spacer for the slave cylinder and notched bellhousing because it relocates the slave 1/2" forward. Uses the t56 bellhousing thankfully.
Did you have to do any crazy fabrication for the T56 to fit? Sorry for the year old reply, just found this video. Amazing work, I'm slowly building my 3.8 to something comparable.
@@romeoboss8974 it's all special order through JE Pistons. I got in contact with their sales guys, had to ship a head so they could map it and all that stuff so they had the right profile for the fly-cuts in the pistons for the cam I'm running. Way overkill for any other off the shelf cam.

247 whp & 268 ft/lbs is pretty impressive out of a V6 Firebird.
I bet ya with a couple hundred pound weight reduction that car would be an absolute blast to drive at a road course race
Love the license plate 😂 NOTAV8
I need that license plate so people stops asking me... Literally the first question they ask when they see u driving a firebird
Hey Dane, awesome to see it running! I'll be following along.
Hi Josh! Thanks :) I'll keep you updated for sure. Hope to travel and do some auto-x events either this year or next.

That's very impressive without running forced induction. I wish there was an easy drop in V6 replacement for these cars thats not in the 3800 family.
Chris Christopher haha yeah, everything else that's worthwhile is dohc and very involved.
How many miles have you put on your car?

Edgar Garcia no paint yet. Hope to soon.

Crank horsepower (advertised) does not equal wheel horsepower. This makes 80hp and tq over stock.
