The reason dwarves use axes is because elves live in trees
That makes sense since they would need wood to run their forges.

I wish Shad was also upset to see this series erase Westmen from our own story. The new film "The Woman King" correctly shows only African people, but all of our history and fantasy is being rewritten to exculde the people who created these stories. The entertainment industry is viciously antiwhite.

But that's why it's just not smart as well as some things like when it comes to war more guys are gonna join because of testosterone telling us to be more competitive and also we literally have generations of warriors in are blood that has altered are brain to like stuff that involves war and want to be a part of it and defend what we like (it's like when we are children and have tiny tank hot wheels)
And this alteration has changed it so we are more desensitized to it
And women altho some I know are more competitive just don't have that raw strength that guys have
And it would take more up keep to have them I'm an army due to periods
So they might have to remove that body part from them in order to keep them on the army wich is something that would very much happen and has happened before
I know this isn't good evidence but it is somewhat based off of real life
(Black widow I'm marvel and there team of spies they remove that body part in order to be a better spy this does in fact happen irl less so but it still does happen)

Actually, the Dwarves did cut a great deal of lumber. They needed it to fuel their furnaces for smelting metals. The Ents were specifically created to protect the trees from the Dwarves. The Dwarves had been created by one of the Valar who wanted to make his own peoples, and the one who had made the trees was worried that the forests would be destroyed by the Dwarves, and wanted a protector for them.
Yes, in the Silmarillion, the Valar even argue about it. Yavanna (who loves the forests) learns about the Ents, and says "Then let those who would take an axe to the trees, beware!" Aule (who created the dwarves) basically shrugs and says, "Yet they shall have a great need of wood." Tolkien wasn't totally naive about cutting down trees, he just hated wanton destruction.
The problem is that simple wood from trees would never produce enough heat to fire furnaces, maybe if it was charcoal but I dont understand at all why they don’t use coal, they’re sitting on massive mines.
@@ravithejon2466 That's more of a flaw with Tolkien's writing than anything else. It's not clear what they use. Maybe they do burn coal, but he never mentions it.
Coal is made from plants. It's found under plains, deserts, even swamps, but not under mountains.
@@ravithejon2466 you make charcoal by baking wood. There was no coal because there was no time to form it geologically, being a "young Earth".
I submit that the 'secret' of Dwarven metal-craft would be coke (coal)...and yes, the dwarves mined coal. Why bother with wood when you have easy access to coal?
About the dwarven axes. Tolkien actually explicitly addressed dwarves cutting down trees, and lots of them. The Valar even argue about it:
"...and Yavanna returned to Aulë; and he was in his smithy, pouring molten metal into a mould.
'Eru is bountiful,' she said. 'Now let thy children beware! For there shall walk a power in the forests whose wrath they will arouse at their peril.'
'Nonetheless they will have need of wood,' said Aulë, and he went on with his smith-work."
That's about all of Eru's children, not only the Dwarves. In the legendarium, Dwarves don't only use axes, but swords and mattocks too.

@@Angrenost02 no it's specifically about the dwarves. The dwarves are Aulë's children. Aulë made the dwarves. So "thy children," directed at Aulë is about dwarves explicitly.
@@adamplentl5588 yes, for this part specifically but just a bit before Aulë says (translated from the french version): "This will be true also for the Children of Ilúvatar, for they will eat and build [...] to them Eru will give the domination of the earth and they shall use all of that they shall find in Arda."
And later, Yavanna asks Manwë: "Is it true, King of the Earth, as Aulë said to me, that the Children who are to come shall have the mastery of all things that I made and will do with them whatever they want?" and Manwë answers yes.
So we can see that here that Yavanna is clearly worrying about all Children of Ilúvatar cutting trees and hunting beasts.

The first armor of Galadriel, the one that you kind of liked, actually breaks the lore. The star symbol on her chest is the crest of Feanor, which she would never wear.

Is it the crest of Feanor specifically or is it the crest or the Noldor? The former she absolutely would never wear. The latter however she might wear. She is one of the Noldor after all and not all of the Noldor took part in the Kinslayings.
There is an answer what I read - if it's true it makes sense, too early to tell. The armor she is using is not hers.

An explanation could be, its not a scale mail breast plate, but rather a hardened dragon leather breastplate. (no idea what it might be in story, but that universe has dragons... for example smaug in "the hobbit")

The fact that this show costs the amount it does but at the same times seems cheaper than the Peter Jackson trilogy is a perfect representation of the series as a whole. No matter how much money you throw at a project, if you just hire people who refuse to respect the project you'll get a terrible end result.
It all went into the CGI. Or just money laundering. Definitely didn't put the money in the writing. No way these episodes cost as much as they say.
Almost everyone who worked on LoTR (costuming, WETA workshop, stunt coordinators, cast, etc) had read the books, many religiously, others in order to get descriptions and characteristics correct. But still ALL were respectful to the source and tried to represent Tolkien as best as they possibly could with what was available to them, to the extent that new technology, filming techniques and digital media was born from the crews needs for better results. Mo-cap has come a long way with the help of Andy Serkis. 😊
It’s got lower production value than old low budget swashbuckling adventure movies that Shad has reviewed. The fact that it’s a multimillion dollar project and that most of that money is going to people’s salaries makes it pretty obvious to me that it was intended to be a cover for straight up criminal embezzling.
Adjusted for inflation the LOTR cost almost as much as rings of power season 1 which has props that can be used over multiple seasons so its probably cheaper overall.

There may be mithril in Aman (the Undying Lands), so the elves might use it for their armor. There's definitively mithril on Numenor, so it's likely they would use it. However, that's from the books. In the show, Elrond seems to have no idea what mithril is, implying the elves and likely the Numenoreans don't have it in the show. Of course, the show is riddled with continuity errors, so who knows what the in-show lore is supposed to be.

if you saw the latest episode the dwarves just begun excavations on a vein of mithril so elven armor from before this time is some other metal.
From the show, it seems mithril is unknown to elves at the start of the show.
That doesn't mean the elves don't have another kind of metal that is super strong - probably through enchantments. Indeed, from the books, I'd have assumed they did.
However, as far as I know, Tolkien often didn't go into detail how widespread elven magic was in their society, or how it worked. In my opinion, that is one of the strengths of LOTR - Tolkien resisted the urge to explain and so kept magic mysterious.

Missed opportunity with the Dwarf helmets: you know how the armoured face mask of Samurai warriors (menpo) sometimes had these big moustaches to make them look like mythological demons?
If I was in charge of designing the Dwarf helmets, I'd have them fitted with similar masks but which were equipped with openings and slits specifically so that the wearer would be able to pull his beard and mustache through to proudly display it outside of his armour.
But this way the helmets actually protect the beard which the dwarvws would be protective of.

@@naamadossantossilva4736 Silly remark. In historical combat, the vikings sported long beards that were not covered up in the slightest. Hardly any recorded instances of hair or beard grabbing during combat at all.
In fact, even the common myth that Romans supposedly shaved and kept their hair short so enemies would not be able to grab it in battle is just that: a myth.
Medieval armour designs, while functional, also placed great emphasis on aesthetics if the wearer could afford it.
@@naamadossantossilva4736 How do you figure that his suggestion would present any more risk of this than the open faced helmets that the dwarves wore in Peter Jackson's movies? Personally, I think this would actually fit dwarven culture and fighting style far better. They are clearly established to favor fighting in tightly packed blocks, which makes sense for both their strong culture of martial brotherhood, and for their physicality. In that sort of formation, visibility is not very important, so a face covering wouldn't be that much of a hindrance. Peter Jackson clearly thought about this when he made The Hobbit, as you see the regular dwarven soldiers wearing full face helmets. Officers have their faces exposed, but that's hardly unbelievable, given that many cultures had officers wearing more open helmets or sometimes none at all, like in the case of high ranking Roman officers. After all, a good officer is supposed to be an inspiration to his men, and that's far easier to do when you can see his face
About wearing plate over mithril chainmail: actually it's not bad. In the LOTR book, when Frodo gets hit, he is not impaled, he does suffer from the hit though: for days, before reaching Lothlorien, he has wound underneath the point where the mail stopped the blade. So mithril IS in fact impenetrable, but chainmail still works as a normal one and transfer the force of the hit to the body underneath. Plate armour would absorb the force, but of course good padding would do the same, being cheeper
Also, in the book it was just an unusually large (but still shorter than a man) orc that got him, not a troll.
The cross guard is actually so close to being good.
Hypothetically, a highly-skilled, long-lived magical race should be doing all sorts of fancy things that theoretically work but never show up in the real world because it's a ton of work for a marginal improvement (e.g. a $50,000 sword that's only 5% better than a $1,000 sword). Fancy metal lattices that are almost as strong as a solid bar while being much lighter make a lot of sense for the design of elvish weapons. But, as others have pointed out, the curve toward the user is kind of sketchy.
Scale armor = because Numenor is an island, and ...water, fish and scales and stuff.
Elvish sword = at 17:48 , you can see the cross guard looks like a tiny bow, and the handle and blade look like a big arrow ...because elves and bows and stuff.
Now I'm imagining Elves just putting trusses, fullers and H-beam shapes into everything XD
In the Silmarillion, Tolkein mentions that the Ents were made to protect the trees from the Dwarves, so tree-cutting is a dwarf thing apparently, hence axes. Hammers and picks also make sense though, and yeah, always axes.
Aside from Gimli, dwarves going to war in The Hobbit, Lord of the Rings, and the appendices thereof (which allegedly this series is based on) used pick axes more than regular axes. Also, lots of swords and the occasional bow.
And it does make a lot of sense for dwarves to cut down trees, since wood is a natural resource that can be crafted into things and the scraps of it are fuel for fire. I've thought of this connection on my own, but never ascribed it to Middle Earth specifically before.
All of the three races would have needed to cut down trees, including the elves (elves would have likely have sought out dead trees). But almost all metal-working would have required huge amounts of wood for fuel. I guess the dwarves might conceivably burned coal, although I don't think Tolkien ever referenced it.
@@Jagonath I've put some thought into this recently on the tangent of another conversation. There is no reason to assume that coal or gas exist, unless Alauvitar specifically created it for them because the world is too young to have formed it naturally.
@@Dave-ks9fi That's a good point. Certainly Tolkien never mentioned anything about coal or gas, so it's probably safe to assume they needed to use wood as a fuel source for everything.

The Dwarves in the first age wore armoured face masks in battle. All the art doesnt have the masks that ridiculously huge though.
The orc blades in LOTR made sense. Simple forged, no folding, just pour it, grind an edge and go.
Rather than having a fine blade, they could rely on the spike for armor penetration.
Functional. Lore-friendly.
Like pretty much none of this shit is.
The crude design also fit the orcs thematically, as well as fit lore-wise, as the orc army was all about quantity over quality.
Additionally, they used a lot of spears/pikes for simple formation combat.
But, I will say, the use of 'hero sword kills anything in one hit!' was dumb in the original ones.
Swords are NEVER 'poured' (cast); they would be incredibly brittle. Both GoT and LoTR commit this crime
@@AliDixon95 they were after mass sword not good swords. Orcs don't care if it breaks they'll just grab another.

My favorite part of this show is when the elf cried because he had to cut down a tree after wearing carved wooden armor for past three episodes.
Maybe the tree he is wearing gave its consent first ... ;)
And why the Green Man on his armor. Doesn't seem like Elves would incorporate Celtic lore from the British Isles into their armor. The one time the show refers to the British folklore of Tolkien's works they get it wrong.
Hey, maybe it's made of magically grown wood that grew exactly into the shape of armor. Or a fallen tree, or a shed bark.

I do want to point out that the idea of scales being on plates is a style of armor that is real.
In japan, there was a technique of molding breastplates to give them scales. It wasn’t actually scale, rather, only a kind of stylization of it. And it was very labour intensive to achieve, but there are quite few examples still remaining from that time.
Given that tfe second age is greater than the third, I can see how this could be reflected in the quality of gear being crafted.
Yes the makers DEFINITELY thought of that armor no doubt in mind.
In middle school we had an assignment where we had to take a survey from our class. I did genres. I was the only person who voted for the medieval/fantasy genre. We also had to decorate our pie charts, so I drew a sword in my pie sliver (: finding your channel recently has been great for me

I will say, at least Peter Jackson didn't put boob armor on eowyn. Wish that would get ditched from fantasy. They didn't put it on Queen Calanthe in the Witcher either, she looked awesome

It honestly hadn't occurred to me that Galadriels armor has chain mail in it.. To me it just reads as fabric or something... I'm by no means an armor expert, but having simply touched actual mail at a museum a few times it's fairly obvious that it would never fold and move like that.
Unless the chain links are very small maybe? Like the mithril shirt if Frodo in the movies, the links are so small that it almost looks like cloth shirt.

yep, chain stretches or moves mostly in one direction. usually up and down so it can move with bending over and breathing.

Mithril is visually the same as silver, but it doesn't tarnish. So it should be super bright as silver is one of the best reflectors of visible light
This is the same problem that "AI" has, they are mixing and matching elements to create a thing without understanding the underlying reason for it. They saw things that "looked cool" and put them in their design without understanding why they were exist in the first place. AI is the definition of knowledge without wisdom. It is encyclopedic in it's information, but has no context to put the information together cohesively. And that's what these costume designers did.
I would love to see an entire series from Shad talking about every armour set in For Honor.
Like 1 episode goes through all the armour of the Warden, next episode Raider, then Kensei and so on.

Episode on the Raider: he got no armor, he’s so dead. End.
My biggest issue with the elven swords is that the cross guard is rounded which would deflect the enemy blade either towards the elf or away from the elf. In general it would fail at all the things a cross guard is supposed to do. It can't catch blades, can't stop blades, and has a high chances of creating a mortal wound to the elf.
@@valandil7454 can you name some examples of swords with no guards? I know there are some.swords with small guards or very short ones. And to my knowledge those kinds weren't very common in Europe or they are from pre-roman era.
@@valandil7454 yes, but they evolved a lot, and if you out a big ass guard at your sword maybe make it usefully and not worse than no guard at all, it probably can hinder certain manovers, can be dangerous for the user, and has no positive effects at all, while when you flip the guard around it works perfectly fine (has less of the drawbacks, and actually does the job it should do)

@@asddasdasdasdadsa flipped around the curved part could act like a brace to the guard. But ye, the curve on the blade side just makes blocking harder since blows would deflect to other areas. Tho maybe thats why galadriel has the hip tassel(I think thats how its spelled).
@@shinobi-no-bueno the guard on that would still be usable for blocking or partying. Although in viking defense they preferred the bearded ax which was cheaper to make, used less material, and was probably why they put so little hand guard on them. Plus swords were a lot harder to make.
I love how they tried to make the female armor not sexist (super form fitting or revealing) and STILL made awful armor.
The only way armor can be sexist is if it bites the woman trying to clean it

I have a theory on the origin of "swords on the back": I think it started because the people in charge of the costumes were schooled back in the age of Wild West and war movies. And you do actually carry a gun in your back (obviously). It might just have been that they had some slings with fake half guns on them to equip the extras and recycled these, adding a cross guard and a pommel. Or it might just have been that they thought that it looked about right, as they were used to guns.
But I definitely think it is based on the way we carry guns.
Possibly. But even then, carrying guns on the back would be more of a thing from infantry wars rather than the Old West. Functionally carrying a gun on one's back is only preferable when one needs immediate access to it, or when there is no other place to store larger weapons, such as on a wagon or horse.
actually if you look at paintings of spanish knights in armor it's very common to see them wearing no gauntlets, just bare hands. It's just something that came into style at some point, possibly as rapiers and swords with basket hilts became more common, used in conjunction with a buckler on the other hand
Also look at the polish winged hussars. They didn’t wear hand protection either.
I don't know what it is, but it looks like it's made of something weak, like paper mache....or Raditz!

The thing I've yet to hear ANYONE mention about Mirial's T-shirt armour is that its literally A PICTURE OF HER BREASTPLATE printed on the tshirt. You can see the hem/border of the breastplate on her bicep, because they just took a photo of the armour and printed it on the tshirt, as well as the little rivet thingies on the scales closest to the hem. They didn't even attempt to hide it, which makes me think they forgot to design an undershirt for her, or something happened to the ones they had and had to make something in 30 minutes before the shoot.
One mild benefit for the beard extension of the Dwarves helmets, it extends the protection down to the assumed chest armor, without the gap at the neck, removing a common weak point in armor. And as to the terrible orc ax, it literally looks like two separate ax heads heads put onto one handle, just in opposite directions.

I love how Shad can't help but notice plot holes as he is trying to focus on armour.
13:10 the masks on the dwarven helmets are actually from Tolkien's writings. In the Silmarillion it's mentioned that the dwarves wore metal masks that helped protect them from dragon fire, and it seems the dwarves maintained that tradition. The beard part is clearly just to help protect as much of their *actual* beards as possible, though it could also help with fire as well.

It's not like beard hair couldn't be bundled up into a normal chin guard. Also those ceremonial masks clearly aren't made for battle but for intimidation. The dwarves hadn't been at war with anything except politics in generations.

I guess I'm still wondering why Galadriel, one of the most powerful magical beings in Middle Earth, has been downgraded to a fighter wearing armor and brandishing a sword? She was one of the first elves to cross from Valinor to Middle Earth so it's not like she's young. Aside from Elrond she is the most powerful elf there. I'm just wondering why they are putting a sorceress who can summon storms and tornadoes at will in plate.
To be fair, this is before she is given charge of her ring. Even after they got their own rings Elrond and Gandalf still ran around using swords and armour to fight. I think people have been trying too hard to apply DnD archetypes to Tolkien's work when it just doesn't fit. Magic in Middle-Earth is very rarely used as a direct weapon and instead, much more about influencing others or the odd "conjuring trick". Even the gods fought their enemies armed and armoured rather than throwing fireballs at each other. In that context I don't see a problem with giving Galadriel, who is objectively less powerful than when we see her in the Lord of the Rings, arms and armour.
@@bjiornbjiorn she was summoning storms in the first age. Elves actually get less powerful the longer they are in middle earth. Galadriel would be more powerful in this time than in LotR.
And yes it is like shooting fireballs at each other. Saruman does literally that, Gandalf summons light and force fields, Elrond controls rivers, and Galadriel has the power of storms.

Living in Wellington NZ, have had a chance to talk to some people in the industry about this Show, and why so much looks so bad.
-First, off screw Amazon, for screwing off to the UK for second season, putting a bunch of people out of work
-Apparently, in total, there were 2 steel blades made for this show, everything else is aluminum. Secondly, there was no input from the weapon smiths, and most of the hilts/furniture on the blades is 3D printed, which is why they look so bad, they don't have to deal with real world physics of making them work like they did for the Jackson movies, as everything there was made in metal then copied to other materials.
-The armour, also 3D printed. which is why you can see print lines on some of it, and why some looks like badly painted plastic. Again, compared to the Jackson films, things were made in steel/bronze/leather then plastic copies made, and again, probably didn't have input of armourers into the design.
- that armour that Galadriel wears on the ship and before is supposed to be mother of Pearl apparently, but is not communicated in anyway, which is why it looks like cheap plastic painted as metal.

There's gatehouses, functional arrow slits, cheval de frise, those wooden barricades with shooting holes that I can't remember the name of, etc. Redmane Castle even has a siege tower, catapults, and ballistae overlooking the bridge to it.
I've been wanting him for years to analyze the Warden's Keep from Dragon Age Awakening, Soldier's Peak from Dragon Age Origins, and the Fortress from Dragon Age Inquisition.
Also wanted him to analyze "Vanilla" Stalhrim weapons and Armor from Skyrim.

Also, in the books Gimli has two (assumedly) single-bit axes, rather than one double-bit axe. It doesn't come up very often, but it's mentioned a couple times. From the way he's described using them, the second one seems to mostly just be a spare.

Gimli has 4, 1 is the double headed one, he took It from Moria, other is the main one, gifted to him from Gloin, the he has 2 smaller ones, one looks like Gloins's axe and he uses both in Pelennor, the last one he uses It as a throwing axe.

The thing about dwarves in lotr is that they are proven time and time again to be INSANELY strong, simply by the fact that they are constant shown wielding huge weapons with ease. Case and point, Dain Itonfoot from the battle of the five armies and his enormous maul that he wielded with one hand while in hot back
I think all fantasies indicate Dwarves being stronger then Humans with various additional benefits.
Dragon Age series 10% resistance to magical damage and unable to actually use magic.
R. A. Salvatore's works stronger, longer lived then humans, and a connection to a smithing deity that can inspire them to create a masterwork armor or weapon or possibly other smithed item.
Then in the Granddaddy of fantasy Tolkien's actual works also stronger and longer lived then humans.
Christopher Paolini's Inheritance Cycle Dwarves are longer lived and brawnier then average humans.

It is not about the facemask. It is about the "BEARD-Mask" that hinders the head movement. Reading stuff still leaves much room for imagination... That is good for a book, less so for a Movie or TV series!

Really, the armor's beard cover isn't a problem at all. The problem is everything around him, from the showrunners to the latest writer.
That was a really good point about double bladed axes being redundant. A spike or hook on the back would be more useful . Reminded me of how a good multi- blade pocket knife has different kinds of blades. More options........Double bladed axes would be good for executioners. Blade gets dull? flip it and chop off more heads!

In regards to the Dwarves hammer spike thing... It appears to be a combination pick\stone splitting hammer. Stone splitters have that tapered flat edge on the front to split the stone down veins where you strike them. It is certainly larger than actual stone splitting hammers but only by i'd say 30% ish depending (hard to get a good judge of scale from photo). The spike on the other ends seems excessive and not practical. The thing about stone splitters is they ARE heavy as hell. Just light enough to lift but not really swing. You let the weight of the head do the work and you focus on aiming where you want it to strike the boulder. I've used hammers like this, you don't swing them like a sledge, you'll end up breaking your arm when the recoil of it hitting the rock hits your arm... So it seems ok as far as size goes, and assuming the dwarves are stronger than an average man it's fine. The real problem is the pick spike... It's useless, pickaxes ARE swung like a sledge, meant to get into softer materials and cracks in stone and wedge them. But the spike as shown, with the splitter head on the other side makes it impossible to use. It would be too heavy to swing like a pick, and if you tried to use the spike like a splitter you could never hit a single point in a way that it wouldn't jerk sideways on impact and potentially be yanked out of your hand.
It's clear this was designers with no real idea what tools are for or how to use them combining two fundamentally incompatible tools that look similar to make it more "fantasy and cool."
Shad, have you thought about making a video giving advice for prop workers on ideas to make inexpensive but realistic armor? And most importantly the things to get right, and maybe the best ways to do "minimal armor".
Look up Living Anachronism, he's got good advice on that stuff since he does LARP and theatre
It’s interesting learning how a fabricated prop translates onto camera. Like, in real life it might look a bit odd, but through the lense it looks totally legit. Ive got a couple of friends who worked in prop/set building in the film industry, and it looks so creative and interesting.
@@creatrixZBD the lens definitely changes things. I heard that for dog fights, they just let the dogs have a play fight, a rumble, and they play it in slow-motion and it looks like they try to kill eachother.
Also: if you spot a nice piece of scenery somewhere,or a colorful sunset, take a picture and prepare to be disappointed: it looks so small on camera.
So yeah, I totally get that 'fake' stuff can look super convincing on camera
Hope you see this Shad. I've just seen the newest episode and there are others with the regents style of armor, and you do get a closer look at it. It seems that the scale armor or fish mail armor under the breastplate isnt actually armor, just a more decorative gambeson sewn to look like fish mail, and seeing it up close, as useless as it is, it is admittedly, very pretty. Also, I love your work & best wishes.
While watching the first episode, I saw the swords carried by the elves in Galadriels unit. And I immediately thought of shad and wanted to see his reaction to the cross guards angled in the wrong direction
So the biggest issue I noticed in your review was the sheer LACK of helmets. I mean three groups, dwarves, elves and guard, but none of the main characters. Where were the rest? I thought Mandalorian brought back the "Helmets are cool" factor.

It's all about distinguishing features, for the Mandalorian that feature is his helm, yet for most actors it is their faces.
I would like to see more helmets but I'm glad reviews don't note it for shows and movies anymore since this is an unfortunate granted for almost all media.

Also people kinda faced the same recognition issues as the viewers irl and found a variety of solutions. Heraldry is (in part) one of them!
The armor that the Tully's wore in the original game of thrones was a really good mix of scale mail and maybe chainmail? Specifically, the blackfish is who I remember the most. Being really cool scale mail.
It did look cool as a concept. The only downside was that you could tell it was some kind of 'fake' leather type or material thing, because it didn't behave the same way or hang in the same way as scales. Eg. you could see the individual scales bending and things, and they had clearly dyed or painted it which made it look much flatter in colour than scales. It spoiled the illusion somewhat. Which was more a problem with budgeting or probably not wanting it to be too heavy for the actors or something.
I think some of the Rohirim soldiers in Two Towers have good examples as well
the elven maille is very fine and ragged looking because its just loose knit cloth with a metallic spraypaint on it.
I just realized what the Nimanorian armor reminded me of. They are a beige version of stormtrooper armor with a plastic lawn chair scale pattern. Probably one piece plastic too.
Other than being easily grabbed, I’d imagine dwarf beard hair has an armor quality of its own. For any hunter, taxidermist, or maybe costumer that has had to break down a hairy hide before, knives get turned by hair all the time.
I like the theory floating around on the interwebs that Dwarf beards help act as a dust filter from all the time they spend mining and forging, so they don't all get blacklung.

The elves don't really look very elven. I assume the person at 20:00 is supposed to be an elf but it looks more like a hobbit.

First of all there are no elves in lord of the rings they are elbs. Second yeah they are the large hobbits also explains why there cloths are do dirty. But yeah it should be elbs.

To be fair on the gauntlets thing, there are occasions in history where armour has been worn without them. A few pieces in the mid - late 15th century, and some landschnekt and later renaissance stuff. Granted these were almost always for use by regular troops though, not actual MAA or nobles.
my favourite version of dwarven battleaxes actually comes from the discworld series, where the more utilitarian dwarves use double bit axes, but the reverse is a pick or mattock blade. they are used in combat with the axe side, and in the mines with the pick side.
I took the pale orcs to be doubling down on their sensitivity to light, making them akin to the appearance of troglabites. They were also initially introduced in a warren complex so it kinda keeps that theme going of being subterranean, with everything being pale to emphasise their photophobia. I think the type of white they used kinda lends to this, being a sickly pallid rather than the clean purity of the elves when they wear white.
That was exactly my thought. Lends more to the idea that they primarily are cave dwelling creatures.

Not everything that glitters is gold and this show is the best example of that.
My guess is that the real issue is a lack of cohesive purpose in the creative team. Jackson inspired and attracted talent, who were happy to work with him and was able to assemble weta, one of the best in the biz. But alienating and sending mixed messages can cause talent to flee. A thousand dollars would not get me a better pencil than 10 dollars. Products have a price point. Exceed it and you waste money. Exceed it too much and product quality deteriorates.
@@jasonbernard5468 exactly. We are 4 episodes in and we have 4 different storylines and we don't know the plot of even one storyline even halfway through the season. I've never seen a show do that before.
We have the harfoot storyline and we don't know what their purpose on the story is.
We have elrond with the dwarfs that build a tower that we don't know what it is for and why they're doing it.
Galadriels story ,the most annoying character, is just luck. She swam an ocean then she happened to find a raft in the Middle of nowhere then a ship happened to pass by, then the ship happened to go to numenor where she happened to find information etc.
Then we have the back elf and Arda and we have no idea what their story is.
This story is a mess. What's the hook for me to keep watching? 4 plotlines and I have no idea how a normie who has never heard of LOTR before is supposed to invest in this

This Elven armor is a far cry from the Peter Jackson Elven armor which I interpret to be more ceremonial than anything else as Elves are more likely to use their larger shields/spears/ and arrows to protect themselves.
Also how many of these armors are meant to be practical compared to ceremonial armors but yeah most of these suck either way.
I'm definitely going to be getting that graphic novel.
Can't say for why the Orc's 'Armour' is pale but the Orc's of this era were supposed to be affected by sunlight more than in the war of the ring era, so it would make sense that they're near albino since they'd normally avoid getting a tan.

Regarding the scale outfit, I suspect that the queen of Numenor likely has a very deliberate nautical aesthetic. Scales designed to reference a fish, even if they aren't actual scales or are incorporated into a rigid armor, make sense to me as symbolic armor for a land of famous seafarers.

so, 12 year bladesmith here, i love the numenorians blade design and handle, the guard looks light but sturdy and would catch a blade well, the pommel looks perfect for balancing a long blade and the handle itself looks comfortable, it also looks to me that the handle is some kind of bone or ivory which is very often paired with whats called scrawling, its essentially a very thin shallow etching, and so looks like it was just drawn on....also everything about the elves long sword is horrindous and as you said would be very unweildy...even with the elves supperior strength...the maul that Elrond holds is shown to be quite heavy but its meant for breaking stone, again elves and dwarves are considerably stronger than men (not dunedain, they're also stronger than men, not quite elf level, but they're strong)
I wonder if when you do a review you can also show a finished redesign of the armor in the way you would have it done at the end of it. Even if it was just hand drawn it'd be good to see how it would look like.

Question; why would sailors wear heavy metal.armor while at sea? If they aren't expecting a threat of pirates or enemy vessels they are warring with, what is the reason for wearing it? There is far more likely a chance of falling overboard if there is no expected threat, which would make a heavy breastplate/Cuirass sure to send you to the bottom faster. Drowning seems infinitely more pressing a concern.
Uhm, ever heard of being boarded? Cannons won't sink a wooden vessel and against movie tropes, no, wooden ships don't just sink so casually after getting blasted by long nines The most economical way of fighting during naval battles is to attack a ship's mast, destroy cannons with your cannons, then board them and take their ship for your own use or for salvage. Also, if you think they wear their armor even if they're not being attacked, you're dead wrong. They only wear their armor when they are being attacked or attacking. You must be watching too much Spanish armada movies lmao.

@@slicerneons3300 The only plausible reason Numenorean sailors (Sea Guard) trainees would wear armor would be to allow them to get on with the extra weight and hindrance of the armor from the start. But I somehow missed the division between "normal" sailors without armor and marines with armor.

It is a military vessel by the look of the crew wearing armor (though rather unusual since all of their ships look the same) so yes, it is within reason for them to wear armor. The ones Isildur was in didn't wear them so that's likely a trading vessel of some sort.

i think the scales on the golden armour are meant to be just an ornamental design (like a fish) not actual scales, to symbolize their relationship with the sea. Their culture is meant to be influenced by Atlantis
I don't know if there are any historical references for slinging your bow across your body, but it is actually quite comfortable if the bow is unstrung. So, it actually works with recurve bows. I probably would not even test it with a strung bow because even the idea of getting a 40lbs slap on your torso if the string snaps is plenty uncomfortable as it is.
I also wondered where Galadriel suddenly got the armor she was wearing in the first episode in later episodes after swimming away from her ship. And yes, Mithril is considered a "new" metal that was just discovered by the dwarves.

It is use of plate armor in these adaptations, Peter Jackson's included, that is my biggest criticism regarding the arsenal of Middle Earth. If you've read the lore, from the First Age to the Third Age, almost all of Tolkien's warriors and soldiers have always been described as the classic chainmail-clad. The rest being scale armor.
The reason for that is the presence of plate armor represents the concept of an "evolution", a "military reform in arms, from mail to plate", "modernization in arms" or "technological advancement". If that's the case then this also represents a theme of "allegory" since this idea would be similar to our world. And we must not forget that Tolkien hated Allegory and the idea of modernization since it is but an obstacle to an escapist world. The world Tolkien made afterall is a world stuck in an era of Medievalism, never or ever slowly showing any signs of progress on a technological scale.
Another thing why I dislike the use of plate armor in these adaptations is because plate armor is way too overpowered and the craft of Numenor (especially for the Numenoreans) when it comes to these types of weapons and armor would clearly surpass ours, therefore making them very difficult to kill. And then an adaptation like that would be left with the old classic Hollywood trope of having swords and axes being able to cut through armor like knife to butter.
Hence why I don't think plate armor belongs in world of Middle Earth.
That IS because classical Tolkien IS based to Finnish Epic Called Kalevala where they Weart only chain mail of coat of plates

That's not entirely true, tolkien especially mentioned orcs being smart with mechanisms of all sorts especially military in Hobbit and the bad guys have this overall theme of modernisation and industrialism to it because of Tolkien experience with ww2.

one justifiable reason to put metal scales on a hardened leather carrier would be the same why we use shingles instead of simply making one continuous roof out of that material:
it is not feasible/economic to make it as a single piece. lets say the used material is scarce or hard to produce in large (continuous) amounts then i could see them making the scales from little bits of metal and then using the pieces to build a full plate. similar to how lead glass was used because people back then couldnt jet produce big continuous glass panes (or they were insanely expensive, hence why big glass windows were a status symbol)
the metal scales give you piercing protection but on blunt impact flexible armor spreads the force less than rigid armor. so the stiff backing of hardened leather combined with the metal penetration protection is the closest to full plate made from metal before they had the capabilities to make such large sheets of metal as to make plate out of.
that being said: we do see pull plate, so that shouldnt be an issue in this story, except if we consider that they are obviously made from different metals/materials, one silvery, one more golden.
maybe the scaleplate is older gear and is more like royal ceremonial heirloom OR it is the newest of the new and made of some very special metal they cant jet produce like they can with regular steel

The pale green under cardboard breastplate looking armor, looks like the winter dusters that we used at Cargill. It's a beef processing plant, & it gets pretty cold, so we have to wear long sleeve padded dusters that looks like the armor at 27.30.

In the Dwarven Kingdoms Triology in Dragonlance, they made a point of saying that Hill Dwarves preferred using Battle Axes While the Mountain Dwarves used Hammers and Picks, although Dwarves of any Clan is known to use either or anything else.
I noticed early on that the costums were not that great on Gil-Galad in particular. He looks like a wiseman from a church play given the material he is wearing.

I really like the look of leatherbounds and would totally get the original novel as one, but the only thing that’s keeping me away is that price point… I think I’ll stick to the new cover of the novel. Can’t wait to read it!
I think it's interesting with the species, Elves and Dwarfs, and how they would do things differently from Men. Elves would practice for sometimes millennia, so it would make sense to have weapons and tools that are very hard to master but would give a great advantage when you get the hang of it. Dwarfs would be extremely strong, being able to use tools and weapons that are too heavy for other species. Not sure what it means for this show, but it sure is interesting. Wish they'd use that sort of thing more in the shows and movies.
Hey shad, could you look over the choreography of Chozen Vs Terry Silver? It’s got hand to hand, sais, and katana. I’m curious as to what you think of it because it’s my personal favourite fight in the series, and as someone who’s in the very early stages of learning how to use sais, I think Chozen’s choreography is actually pretty well done.
