The film makes sense to me in reference of Korine’s life. He made a character of himself being someone he doesn’t know, had people who believed him and who he trusted, did something they all collectively put effort into and hardly anyone showed up to care. That’s how all his films pretty much went box office and critically-wise
This is one of the best ways to do a review: elevating it towards the meaning. We can admire the intent and message of a work even when we acknowledge its shortcomings. It's the barrier that separates honest insight from just shitting on things to make yourself feel bigger. You rock, Kyle.
Man, I actually really like this film. First of all, I think there is a connection between the two stories - to do with how both are putting on a "performance", a performance they are putting all the faith they have into. And the fact that it ultimately fails. But I think the act of "performance"/impersonation here is way deeper than just literally being an impersonator. I don't think it's any mistake that it's not just the actors who played impersonators who are listed under "impersonators" in the credits. I think the first most obvious parallel is that the actors are impersonators - I think this is a story about actors to a degree (note the two authority figures are both directors). But I also think "impersonation" is meant as trying to be somebody you're not. That horrible feeling of just wishing you had a different life... and in both instances shown in this film, this attempt ultimately fails. Sure, it's kind of fun and interesting to a degree - and I think the film is saying (especially the Marilyn Monroe egg-monologue...) that watching/utilising actors/impersonators can temporarily give you hope, enjoyment, interest, fun. But ultimately you have to go back to real life - your real life. That means not being an actor, AND not "impersonating" someone who you are not (not only in a literal sense but in the sense that you need to try to live your own life). I don't think this film is perfect, and there are definitely some scenes that are a bit too weird... but for me, I just think almost every seen involving the impersonators was amazing to watch. There is just a powerhouse cast here, and the cinematography is beautiful. Watching Buckwheat bathing a wailing English pope would be amazing without any context IMO. I just found this film an absolute joy to watch - from start to finish.
I saw a video of him explaining the Parallel between the impersonators and the nuns they both explore the idea of transcendence and wanting to be something bigger than you actually are
The premise for this film reminds me of a pitch for an indie I played with in my head during high school, about a Midwestern boy who dedicates his life to Damo Suzuki impressions and takes a Greyhound to NYC so he can solicit Pitchfork contributors for party services.
The Evangelion reference just made me think why the hell haven't you done an episode on Neon Genesis Evangelion. It's right up your alley. It's foreign, pretentious and influential as shit. Not to mention it's the focus of intense debate even today. Just a thought, if you're looking for ideas.
If I had to guess, there are probably a variety of reasons: 1) NGE is too mainstream for this show. Sure, random people off the street aren't gonna know about NGE, but plenty of people here on the internet do, especially the ones that watch this show 2) Like he said in his cameo in Sage's End of Evangelion review, the anime uses a bunch of Christian symbolism (or "SYMBOLISM!!! OMFGWTFBBQ!!1!!!", if you prefer), but there's no real meaning behind any of it 3) Ralph Oancitizen the character has been shown to be in the Animation Age Ghetto when it comes to anime, if you remember his crossover w/ JO on the Utena movie
I FUCKING GOT THAT WERNER HERZOG INSIGNIFICANT BULLET POINT JOKE BUT NOT CUZ I'M A FAN OF HERZOG. SOMEONE LOANED ME MARK KERMODE'S BOOK. I JUST READ THAT CHAPTER TODAY. SO WEIRD.
@@Oscararon Okay so. Werner Herzog is what one in the biz might call "metal as fuck". In 2011 he was doing an interview and some guy with an air rifle just like. shoots him. no reason why, just shoots him. Herzog isn't even phased, and he just moves the interview to a place with less open fire, which is generally considered a good move. The bbc crew ask if he's okay while the guy is going "oh i shouldn't be doing this while on camera" as he's casually taking down his pants and pulling up his shirt to get a look at his abdomen wound. he replies to their concern with "it's not [a] significant [bullet]".
"Man in the Mirror" -- as apropos as it gets. I love your honest, serious look at a movie many people (myself included) would cringe at. Because of the way I'm wired, it's easy for me to feel a certain contempt for parody. For the longest time I felt a deep contempt for Weird Al Yankovic, as I've always loved Michael Jackson's music and felt deeply prrotective of him even when the allegations against him were flying fast and furious. It wasn't until I learned that Al did what he did out of love that I started to see parodic artists -- including impressionists -- in a different light. Celebrity impersonators are still tough for me to grasp. Are they doing it to make fun of the people they copy, or out of respect? Are they hiding their true selves behind the facade, like the character from an early episode of The Simpsons who had Michael's voice? Or is their interpretationof the celebrity what they see as their true selves, like drag queens or kings? Mister Lonely isn't likely to answer those questions, but it does raise them. And of course the metaphor you spotted is utterly, utterly brilliant. I have never heard of the vast majority of the movies you look at, and that's kind of the point.
hi, i love this movie. It and Holy Motors and Synecdoche NY and Shapito Show and Crystal Fairy and also some Fellini and LFT bring me back to life time upon time
My take : We are all the impersonators and the impersonators are all the nuns in that moment before they hit the ground . The beauty of the film is that it allows them to live , it gives pay off to their faith. Or maybe I’m just crazy who knows ! 🤪 great video .
I honestly love the concept of this movie. I'd love to see a better done version of it that's more focused on the themes you presented at the end of the video.
man its weird rewatching these videos, because its kinda obvious that he's trying to imitate the nostalgic critic, but its really not his bag. i'm so glad that he left channel awesome and started to make more emotionally honest and insightful videos into movies instead of being forced to take part in a gimmick that the butt weasel doug walker thought was funny
I feel it's too bad you've already done three of Harmony Korine's movies, because i'd love to see you talk about one of my two favourites from him: Gummo and Julien Donkey-boy. Or, do Vinterberg's Festen.
Correction appended: 1. There's never been an english Pope (anglicans don't count) 2. French Chaplin: Max Linder (actually, Chaplin is the english Linder since he came first) 3. Italian Queens: Sophia Loren and Monica Belluci 4. Abe F*cking Lincoln: Lincoln Vampire Hunter 5. Fictional Buckweed: technically that would make him a cosplayer, not an imitator (same with Red Riding Hood)... Do your homework, Kyle!!!!
Yep! I don't quite get why he's saying this as they're impersonators. Do all impersonators have to come from the same country as the celebrity they're impersonating or something?
10:00 It would be so funny if they kept jumping only to one time have God answer back something along the lines of "Nah." or "WTF! WHY DO YOU BITCHES KEEP JUMPING!? I figure, "Oh the first girl was an accident. She didn't mean to do it. You know what? These women have been so devout, that what the hell. Even though I don't usually give confirmations of faith till you're dead, just this once, here you go." Then it happens again, with more of you this time, and I think "OK. You've done used up your guy's quota, but surely this isn't the beginning of a trend..." AND THEN YOU ALL JUMP NOW?!?!!! WHAT?! DID YOU GUYS NOT GET THE MEMO THAT I DON'T LIKE SUICIDE!?!! CUZ I'M PRETTY SURE THEY CIRCULATED IT AROUND THE CATHOLIC CHURCH! No, you know what? I'm not doing it!. Yea. That's right. Fuck you. No, no, nope. Should've thought about that before you thought that I have nothing better to do than resave some dumb females I've already kept from death on multiple occasions." Wouldn't have saved this meandering train wreck, but would've been an extremely funny scene.
Wait have you seen Neon Genesis Evangelion? I thought you didn't like anime. If you have, it would be really interesting to hear a film enthusiast's view on the show. Anyway, great video. Similarly, I thought the film is painfully bad, but I can't really hate it, since I have sympathy for what it's trying to do.
+GameStation3 Because RUclips bots didn't like the long, uninterrupted shot of the film that I used. I didn't know how to edit around it and I was never fond of the joke anyway so what the hell, I cut it.

this sounds like someone who has just got into korine. I get it I felt similar to his work. but I'm not sure you get the point. in my mind it is just a way to deal with losing others. the ending solidified that meaning for me. it's not about finding people to make you who you are. it is the acceptance of death and faith. I'm by no means a catholic. but I think we are meant to take this how we see it. not a deep analysis of the normal tropes that being said. I get it you are def taking from a channel awesome type (if you're a part of that I apologize for my ignorance) I just feel like you are taking these films in a different way.

8:20-8:24 Michael Jackson and Charlie Chaplin playing table tennis. The absurdity of that is kinda funny to me.

I'm a huge Korine fan, but am willing to admit there might be something wrong with me.
To be honest the Micheal story line when they get to the faker island, the plot starts to sound like a Mad-Libs.
This film actually looks really fun and my kinda thing.
This review remains a favorite of mine because in college I was assigned this movie in a film course. Our task was to analyze this.
I haven't even seen a Korine film yet but from his Letterman interviews to all the clips I've seen I already love him so much

How the hell does Harmony Corrine get these actors, and directors, to appear in his films?
We must make it. We must make. We must not break it! and I'm dead.
Is James Dean played by the dude from Vampire Diaries?
yes. yes it is.
Playing six degrees of seperation I also link this movie to a cw show about vampires so maybe rething that theory

how come we don't see Ven anymore in the newer videos? :(
