I know you highlighted a lot of folks have deep-dived Network before, but I don't think I've ever seen it done more completely or more complexly. I offer the best prayer I can for this video; may it be spread far and wide, be seen by everyone who needs to see it, lead to massive increased Patreon payouts for you, and may not a single one of those people ever bother you outside that context.

Empathy is a wonderful trait, please don't apologize for it. If more people had empathy, the world wouldn't be as screwed up as it is.
The trick is taking action to back up the emotion. Empathy without action is useless...kinda like thoughts and prayers after a school shoo†ing.

    • @billeethesciencegeek
      @billeethesciencegeek Год назад +3

As with many other things, empathy has no value inherent; It is a tool. It is a tool to generate an understanding of your fellows, both in objective and quantifiable measures as well as those more subjective and qualitative. It can be used to harm or benefit others, and can be used competently or incompetently. Further, communication will always be able to undermine any amount of goodwill and thoughtful empathy. Remember, always, that empathy is the cornerstone of emotional intelligence, and emotional intelligence is key to accomplishing anything that involves another person. Just be kind and thoughtful in the way you use your understanding, and the world will be better for it.
TLDR: empathy is key to intelligence, but remember to be thoughtful and kind with your words as well. The world will thank you. (I just realized this TLDR could be seen as a criticism when it isn't meant as such, but I'll leave it as a rather ironic proof of my point)

It's something I and most likely a lot of people that watch you find relatable on a level most other creators can't provide. 😡 I remember, as a teenager then a young man, watching The Daily Show With Jon Steward. Watching for years as someone charged with making fun of the news became increasingly direct in his punditry. I remember watching a satirist give a speech at the White House Correspondents' Dinner, and it being debated if he had been serious or not. So many of these modern influencers feel like parodies played entirely seriously, screaming vitriol and descending into lunatic rants, and after being surrounded by them, for so long, more and more people act like it's normal. That this is how it's supposed to work.
And it's just not funny anymore.

Around everyone you know and love, around everyone you don't know and therefore have less reason to dislike. Everyone needs you to not just yell out of your window or through your device, but stop watching and get not just mad as hell but organized and active. Reach out, network, plan, disagree, learn, and get things done together. Start small, grow smart, offend, defend, retreat if you have to but never surrender. Prepare for the long haul. Revolution is a process, not an event, let alone a spectacle. 😡

Heh, I love how you put in the text "I know I am biased, get over it" about Gore Vidal. I am a conservative, libertarian mindset, but DAMN do I like Gore Vidal. My parents, one of whom was big supporter of the RNC, and the other campaigned for Reagan in the 80's, and George W. Bush in the 90's, both always told me to form my own opinions, and not just blindly follow their own political beliefs. Given the amount of reading I did growing up, as my mother was a librarian and my father an English teacher, both fascinated with history, and space exploration, I am amazed neither of them ever showed me the film Network, nor have a copy of it. I only really found out about it in College when I was researching the death of the free press, and how news used to legally required to cover both sides of an issue. I watched so many interviews and read multiple books regarding this, and it was fascinating to read about. Given you mentioned the big 1968 political debates and protests, I am sure you know what I mean regarding the fact that the way News was handled back then, versus now, is like night and day.
As for the very early part of the video, the part you mentioned regarding how often liberalism provides its own counter, or something along those lines, it is often true in my experience as well as from what I have read as well. Many of my friends who are both neo-liberals, and classic liberals, were not taught about common logical fallacies. I have seen people of many political persuasion show this lack of knowledge, often, and hilariously, I have heard many bad talk Aristotle or John Locke without knowing their role in helping shape the understanding of these central fallacies.
Aristotle's Sophistical Refutations and John Locke's An Essay Concerning Human Understanding, are excellent reads, but I am sure you have read them, given how you handle logical fallacies when you cover many subjects. 🌹
Edit: forgot to add it. 😡

😡 fantastic work. i sometimes wish i was back in college, auditioning for stage work, so i could use the "YOU! MUST! ATONE!" speech as a monologue. Howard Beale taught me a lot about anger and madness, and i've spent the last twenty years or so being angry...i have found that the only cure is action, reaching out to others and trying to do good in the world, no matter how little it might seem to matter on the outside. i don't do enough, i want to do more, and i'm trying my best. if you're reading this and you're mad as hell too, reach out and get involved. don't turn that rage inward or swallow it or drown it. you'll feel so much better if you just try.

I rewatched Network a few times over the years with my dad as I grew up, and hearing my dad laugh uproariously as Howard marched into the studio in trenchoat and pajamas, or receive the "revelation", or declaring "I must make my witness!" probably did a lot to shape my relationship with the film. I think it entrenched in my mind that perhaps, just perhaps, Howard Beale was more cautionary tale than true prophet.
I think it also helped that the line my Dad and I tend to throw around more often is "You have meddled in the primal forces of Nature!" than "I'm mad as hell, and I'm not gonna take it anymore."
Great video, and I appreciate pointing out the more uncomfortable elements stemming from the movie's age. It'll definitely give me more to think about whenever I next sit down to rewatch it.

Good thing I haven't followed a "rage" channel in over a decade. The last one I dropped in 2012, after the guy said video games weren't art, simply because it would otherwise violate his strongly held belief that art "died in the Bush years"

This is a fascinating watch right after The Leftist Cooks' recent video "This is not a Video Essay." I can't help but think that there is a process that happens in watching and dialoging with these video essays (Not you, the author, but the art/output itself). This process is similar to school education in that it shapes ideas, dialogues, strategies, and attitudes, as well as being capital A Art. While watching a video is not "praxis," it is part of the path of praxis. And for the 70% or so that are watching as vegetables, there's still a valuable moment being experienced by the hundreds of others present and thoughtful. A lot of the research on reading, for instance, talks about the need for theoretical time spent stretching and testing emotional presence.
Also, your cover of "Land of Confusion" is genuinely excellent. Thank you for that.

😡 As my therapist told me, you are too self aware. That kind of struck me while watching this, that same analysis of your own actions, thoughts, emotions etc. Connecting it all to the media landscape as a whole. Understanding your role in it. This is genuinely some of your best work.
I won't go into your own mental health, or mine for that matter, as I don't want to fall into those same parasocial relationship problems you've described, but I do want to say, I feel you my man, thank you for all you do, and I wish you the best.

😡 Now that the algorithm is appeased, I can think about the idea of media feeding off our anger. I struggle with how much of our anger drive in media is wired into our brain through self preservation instincts and how much is tied to our capitalistic system. I wonder what an internet or television evolved away from capitalism would even look like.

@@kostajovanovic3711 All I have regarding Kyle’s falling out with other video essayists is what’s been made public by the involved parties. I’ve read the docs, the Tweets, the subTweets and… frankly it’s none of my business. As far as I can tell, no one has committed a crime. People’s path toward becoming who they are is a messy one, and bridges are often burned. Part of me wishes Kyle was with all the cool kids on Nebula, but whats more important is him taking care of his mental health, doing work that makes him happy, and finding a community that accepts him and helps him be his best self.
Whatever drama has happened between these 30-somethings I don’t know hasn’t stopped me from enjoying Kyle’s writing, his voice, his humor, his perspective, or his editing. I think we could all give these public figures some more room to breathe.

Rage is addictive and easy, being kind and vulnerable is painful, especially if you are not used to it. I have no solution to offer, only to wish us all some patience and a lot of good luck in coming years.

They were certainly right about this film being prophetic. The whole storyline about the anchor delivering an impassioned angry plea to the audience to see reason and think for themselves, only for his breakdown to be turned into a bit and commodified by the network? Honestly it's thanks to this movie that nobody can do such speeches anymore with any sincerity. Because now any time a person delivers an angry impassioned speech about the horrors of broadcast sensationalism or political injustice or whatever, people will only think "Oh hey, he's doing the 'I'm mad as hell' bit!"
