    What are your thoughts on this years Black Bay Monochrome? 🥃

      I think that Tudor nailed this watch. Tudor is probably the best brand out there right now from the standpoint of continuing to put great product out there year after year.
      This is a Snowflake Submariner as far as I am concerned.

      Quick question... I've noticed nobody is talking about the bracelet on the gold BB58, it has no faux rivets!!! That in my opinion would make a stainless steel BB (in any size) perfect! Do you think Tudor is giving us a glimpse of what's coming in future iterations of the BB family? Thanks!

    • @ID-Guy
      @ID-Guy  9 месяцев назад +2

      @@MikeRochacvery good point Mike. I think it is part a debut of some kind (just looking at how the BB Bronze debuted T-fit, the BB Ceramic debuted METAS, 2-lines on the dial) but also “cost cutting” eliminating the technicalities of having to create the rivet look with many extra parts 😉🥃

      Ryan, thank you for this brother, seriously 🥃 What's a crazy thing (and should be standard with brands) is that they supply the purchaser with all the strap choices. Take Zenith (since I mentioned it in the video) They offer you a full bracelet, interchangeable lug ends, strap with deployant AND a nato in one package... its insane. Think they're one of only a few that gives you all 3 options. Would be brilliant seeing Tudor do the same thing, right?

    Tudor seem to be filling the void that Rolex left when they decided to drop the “high quality professional watch” branding for “exotic status symbol” branding. The movement in this direction by Rolex must have been made at a corporate level some time ago, so it makes sense for them to want the sub brand (no pun intended), Tudor, to step into that void, starting with the original Black Bay and developing over time until we get the Tudor Submariner, without actually calling it a submariner so as not to dilute the status symbol factor for Rolex. It’s really clever marketing that has worked quite beautifully.

    • @ID-Guy

      The passing of the baton seems clearer now than ever, right? Honestly I could have all the Pelagos’ and still not feel compelled to chase a Rolex Sub. I find the snowflake so much more interesting (and as a dive watch? Chefs kiss) Zero polish & reflection, lightweight etc etc - Tudor have opened up so many great avenues 🔥 Well said here Timothy!

      Agree. But unfortunately they’ve alienated many with their loss of control over the distribution of their products (they could reign in the ‘out the backdoor’ sales in a heartbeat). So many will refuse to consider Tudor. Which is unfortunate since they are such great watches.

    The thing that appeals about this watch to me is that it harkens back to the 90's subs. Modern day Rolex is much flashier. This gives you that more subdued 5-digit sub look with the added Tudor-isms, and with modern build quality. Absolutely stellar release in my opinion.

    I am seriously considering this as the watch to buy to celebrate one of those milestone birthdays. I don’t have a watch in my collection of this price and quality.
    It’s still between this and the Omega Seamaster M in white. With Tudor and Omega, they are accessible now. No games to be played, no waitlists. And while Rolex is one I would love to own one day, I feel that when you treat your customers as if you are doing them a favor, it’s is not an attitude I appreciate.

    Pretty much spot on Mr. I D. I have been a watch enthusiast since 1963 (when my parents bought a me my first watch; a Swiss made 'Commando Sport' for Christmas in Cleary's Department Store in Dublin. I was 13 years old. It cost about 2 Euros in today's equivalent money.Throughout the years since then, though never a collector, I have owned countless wrist watches, a couple of pocket watches and a few clocks. I've seen it all come and go, especially in the last 30 years. Most of it has been overblown overpriced and overdone hype. No doubt there has never been a better time than now to be a watch enthusiast; for many reasons. However, the bottom line is 'less is more'. I have had for example a Rolex Sub - 1976, an Explorer 1 (1016) late 70s. Omegas, Brietling, Longines, Eterna, IWC, Seiko, ..... most of them being tool watches, all gone now. I have seen the models I have owned being turned into 'icons' status symbols, biged up and blinged up, polished up, priced up and turned into jewellery - though with great movements. I am back, more or less where I started. I have a Tudor BB 54, A Tudor Ranger 39mm, though I would prefer a 36 mm version. A BB 36 mm, first edition with the ETS 2824 bullet proof movement. I have a Longines Heritage Silver Arrow, A Seiko Solar 38mm Divers, A Seiko 39mm Speedtimer Chronograph and a couple of genuine 1960s hand wound pieces. The rest you can keep ! Yes the Omega 1957 Seamster retro. from 2017 is grand but give me this new Tudor any day even though it is too big for mine and no doubt many other six and a half inch wrists. Keep it simple is best, followed by robust and reliable movements which do what a watch needs to do which is tell the time, with understated style and simplicity. Love your vids, they are concise, informed and honest, they have already outlived the countless UTube hypes of the last 10 or so years. Rock on man and give us an aul tune on your guitar now and again. Mile maith agat a chara ; many thanks my friend.

      What a fantastic read this was Mick. Thank you sir! It means the most that these sorts of videos are appreciated for their brevity (and hopefully one good point that resonates) But to read your experiences, having owned the classics and resorting to simple pieces instead? I think it’s the same for so many enthusiasts. My late father loved his cars from Lotus Cortina’s and onwards but retired with a 2001 Audi S3. Nothing flashy but did it haul… thank you for this again Mick and have a super weekend! 🥃

    With some contradictory thoughts on this watch, I think it might just be my favorite release of the past couple of years. At first sight I was very much in your initial impressions. But upon reflection, the amount of absolute value for feel is incredible. The no color, no date, no nonsense ideals of this this watch means it looks as in place on a wrist in the fields as at a formal engagement, or on a landscaper’s wrist to the boardroom. All this while not feeling precious about it. I’m usually a date complication absolutist, which is where my partial step back came from, but the starkness that this watch brings with the minimal text and black and white feel, the date would ruin it for me, at least I think. Ok, no more waxing poetic. Always love your takes

    • @ID-Guy
      @ID-Guy  9 месяцев назад +2

      Excellently said William. It’s always better to let the hype settle (he says while promoting a watch that’s just been launched and is hotly talked about) But I think of all the years in the past where so many would say “get rid of the gilt” and it never registered how many people are far more keen on a simpler look. Seeing these live shots now… goes to show how versatile it can be. AND wouldn’t it be miraculous if these launched with a date? Feels odd me saying (as a no-date guy) that these are getting a bit repetitive with the symmetry 😆🥃

It had a red bezel with chunky teeth and a silver dial, but in overall design it was similar to the old Subs you see that were military issue. The person had been to a meeting with Tudor and suggested to me that this could be an upcoming release, but also that it could just be a concept that may not make production. For me, as a Sub owner, there's no doubt that this can be called the Tudor Submariner. The overall aesthetics, the size, the materials, the domed crystal, the fewer lines of text... comparing them to those of the Rolex Sub, are in my opinion so much more uncomplicated and less supposedly luxury, and therefore more practical.
    If I had to choose between the Tudor and the Rolex Submariner, my only real concern would be the movement: how reliable is the Tudor model compared to the Sub? I think that, in the end, the reliability of Rolex over most other watch brands, is the key to its success.

Still blows my mind just how incredibly hardy Rolex movements are (and accurate) It's yet another thing that can't be criticised about the brand ;)

      What is interesting is that we have here a Tudor which is superior to the 5-figure Rolexes. This BB is at least as good as a 14060m but more precise and with a better bracelet and a better power reserve.

      It's puzzling but it's almost intentional that they dont make it perfect. Yes I agree that monochrome would be perfect to be thinner (I mean who cares for metas, even BB GMT is thinner) and BB GMT would be perfect if it had a 5 link. It's almost like giving themselves an insurance so they could come up with a slightly better version when things get tough. 😢

    Like most folks, it took me a bit of time to appreciate it and my thoughts on it haven’t congealed yet …
    I do have thoughts though but they've mainly been around where the Wilsdorf Foundation sees Rolex's target market going forward. Are we are starting to be subtly nudged towards Tudor (or away from Rolex) for our steel tool watch needs?
    I don't know - it sounds sort've mad, but also sort've makes sense to let Tudor have the daily / GADA market and leave the 'milestone purchases' for Rolex.
    Is that what's starting to happen?

    I just picked this up from my AD this week. For my flat 7" wrist, I think it's perfect. The case actually only measures 40mm and the bezel 40.5mm. It's all personal taste, but the 58s just feel a little small to me. I do own the Ranger in the 58 case and I love it. I believe it has more presence on wrist than the 58 because it's mostly dial (very small bezel). Anyhow, the new monochrome feels really good to me personally. @@ID-Guy It would definitely make for an awesome video, as there seems to be a bit of a divide on the topic. When I mentioned it on a Reddit thread dedicated to the new releases, many seemed to prefer the cleaner dial, but truly think more text would balance things out. Alternatively, Tudor could place Black Bay where “Geneva” currently is located, as I believe Tudor manufactures their watches in Le Locle now anyway, and I’ve always found the word a bit misleading with my 58.

    I don't know if the original idea of the Black Bay was to be Tudor's "Submariner", but with the success achieved with the release I can see that perhaps becoming the goal. There has been a slow evolution in the Black Bay 41 over the last few years: First the move from ETA to in house and now METAS certified. Then the subtle reworking of the case, changing the crown, changing the bezel ever so slightly. Very much like the evolution of the Submariner over the last few years. I owned the ETA Black Bay and handled the 41 monochrome over the weekend. While the dimensions may be pretty similar, the case feels and looks very different. It feels smaller and maybe even more refined?
    One could argue that the current Black Bay with ETA movement, on paper, is a "better" watch than the Tudor Submariner was. I still feel the Tudor Submariner has it beat on proportions though.
    In the coming years I can see Tudor slimming down the Black Bay 41 even more, removing the rivets and keeping that for the vintage inspired models (58 and 54) and maybe even going the route of a Black Bay and Black Bay Date. At the price point the BB41 sits I think a few other brands with pricier diver's watches might well be sweating.

    IMHO, I'd say tudor's answer to "the sub" ought to be the newer black bay case with the pelagos(ish) dial, square markers, and snowflake hands (resembling the old tudor sub). The bracelet...the "oyster" bracelet would exclude the step-down links w/ pho-rivets for the more traditional smooth taper instead. I think the five link bracelets look fine as is. Lastly, the clasp should either be the pelagos adjusable or the t-fit. I dunno 🤷‍♂️, but something i think about regarding this topic.
