      Pick better memes. Some of these aren't even funny, or they're literally just "haha look at me, I USE linux and you don't"
      The only one I could relate to was the MOZ_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1 one, because firefox actually does run slower in Xwayland.
      Also the thumbnail is wholly untrue for SystemD. (it has hung on me a few times because a filepicker or something was left open)

      @@supericeg5913that, and also Windows devs are forced by company policy to keep their entire API stable. When they introduce a breaking change they add polyfill to keep old programs working, sometimes even specialized behavior for certain large programs. That's why Windows always grows in size - they can only add code and refactoring is severely limited.
      Meanwhile Linux devs just break things and notify dependents they need to tweak a few function calls (or someone creates an issue).
      I personally prefer the latter as it keeps a lot less stale code around.

      @@supericeg5913 Doesnt even have to be open source devs optimizing. Even just adding in a line into a loop can enable the compiler to loop unroll the function.
      Or alternatively even just properly modularizing software can change a lot about how much storage space is needed for the binaries.

      I had to reinstall my OS. 😂
      Edit: This was Gentoo on a PS3. I booted into a built-in shell (included with the bootloader) so I could reformat / and re-do all of the unpacking steps for the stage. I don't recall losing any files, so I must have been smart and used a separate /home partition before this. I rarely do that anymore, but I also don't nuke my own systems anymore, so it's fine. 😂

      @michaelhuss0 4 месяца назад

      @@davidboss2160 Once you have a shell and a bootloader, Gentoo is pretty much the same on all architectures. Back then, I think the ps3 patches were mainlined, so I didn't even need to use any special kernel sources. Format partitions, unpack stage, set up fstab, compile kernel... the usual.
      The PS3 was easier to set up than the Sharp Zaurus I used Gentoo on. For that, I needed a special, patched kernel source and a second-stage bootloader. Why, other than pure masochism, did I use Gentoo on 416MHz arm? Because, that environment was basically identical to my other machines. Instead of using handheld-oriented distros that were always missing things, I wanted to use the same window manager, same apps, same IDE/VCS... no compromises. Nowadays, Ubuntu on arm fills a similar niche.

      Meanwhile AMD drivers (for quite modern cards/integrated chips): work straight out of the box, already included into the kernel in the vast majority of distros, but you might want to fine-tune them a bit. Proprietary bits are optional and are not required in most use cases.
