Watch out when buying second hand Buck 119s from guys called Pete. Especially when the descriptions read something along the lines of "has seen some shit", "your next poop knife" or "sharpening this knife has always been a number two priority".
I like how the finger that spreads the toothpaste on the toilet goes right back on the toothpaste😂 Also you used too much pressure on the pull through. Other wise it would have worked flawlessly. They used to use those to put the final edges on original wootz Damascus thats been quenched in original Corinthian leather. So it's definitely user error it didn't work.
Sadly this video caused me to be forced to throw out the toothpaste so I really need to hustle it out to make my $3.40 in adsense to cover it.
Also, I heard that using pull through sharpeners on H1 steel will work harden it and acktually make it into a super steel like Maxamalt or Mangathrust

After watching my father in law struggling with a completely dull carving knife one Thanksgiving, I said just give me the knife and 5-10 minutes please, can everyone wait 10 minutes for sliced turkey rather than bludgeoned? I came back downstairs with a sharp carving knife and everyone was happy until later that night I told them I used the toilet tank lid.

Tried the rubber trick on my WS Field, worked well even on the diamond stones. Cut it down slightly so the eraser could fit inside.
Now do this with 15V.

Sure, but all in all, a whole toilet is more expensive than most sharpeners.
And most important: how often are your sharpeners occupied by another person of your household... ;-)
I find that nobody else wants to use my sharpening utensils, but the toilet gets frequent use by anyone in the house.
Even visitors! Never had that hapen with a whetstone...

Ive got a 1/4 inch thick slab of 1095 steel that I hit with a big stick to make little sticks out of other big sticks..
It came in a reasonable sheath with a little pocket on the front..
Guess what lives in that pocket along with a ferro rod.. 3 or 4 pull thru and its good to go..
I haven't tested it on paper but.. I don't use it to cut paper.. ive got scissors for that..
Its only purpose in life is to make little sticks out of big sticks .. (and there are some pretty tough sticks in Australia)

Ive actually got 2 pull thru sharpeners. One of them is a Work sharp..
The Work sharp doesn't go camping... it lives in the bottom drawer with the rest of the stuff I just cant bring myself to throw away..

i wasn't expecting you to push the edge, the homemade pottery ceramic i use chips easily, i have better luck dragging the edge backwards, and it does the job better then my cheap diamond plates, before i used the ceramic, it was totally dull, now it actually has an edge, although i'm not good at sharpening

The only problem with coffee mug sharpening, opposed to toilet sharpening is, that you can't have coffee and sharpen at the same time.

Not all pull through sharpeners are equal. Lansky makes an all ceramic pocket ‘crock stick’ pull through that is fine. They also make the dreadful carbide ‘blademedic’, but confusingly make very similar all ceramic or all diamond ‘c-sharp’ and ‘d-sharp’ pull throughs that are fine.
Gerber also made a pocket pull through with medium and fine ceramic rods too, that is still on sale out there.
Are these your primary sharpeners? No. But they are useful to hone an edge that is dulling in a number of circumstances. I keep them in our picnic/camping kit, usually have one when travelling, and they are a must in a fishing bag. They are not for your prized knives, but do well on an Opinel. I wouldn’t use any other sharpener on my bait cutting mora while on a rocking boat.

G'day Pete, I assume that was a 119 in 420HC ? in any event, I think it's fair to say; two little concentric ceramic rings, on a common kitchen pull through job, in particular;
A. will be working against any previously ground/sharpened edge geometry,
B. there's gonna be at least some significant, likely inordinate, play in the wheel "axles" and
C. there are ceramics ...... and there are ceramics.
At the end of the day, with ya, mate, ...... poo !!!! ...... I wouldn't flush it though, might get stuck in the "S" bend, .......uuuum, a sledge hammer .... nah that's too easy ........ a bin throwing might be in order, .... albeit quite a small target, ......... but hey .... what better to hone your bin throwing skills ; )
Incidentally, back in the day, six wheel, (3 a side), metal, (f*k knows what metal, simply looked like washers), versions were all the rage, did a job, sort of, though from what I remember, to sharpen 440A at best. ........ but now you tell me ........ I reckon every cistern back then was ceramic, and I wouldn't mind betting, toothpaste had a coarser grit too ; )

How do you find the blue Spyderco sharpening stone. Seems to load up so fast for me, any tips to keep it clean. I know all the usual ones. Long time viewer. If you have time dude. Final fantasy I think 8 or 9 back the day rocked my world
Knifecenter Has the Blue Spyderco ceramic stones for 49 the best method I've seen for cleaning is Bar Keepers Friend and a hard scrub or 4
Seems ok so far, its very steel dependant in my experience. I sharpened some H2 the other day for an upcoming video and it was just everywhere in my shaptons. The spydie i just hit with an eraser like a improv nagura stone and it works alright. eats the eraser pretty fast tho!

Obviously you can’t put a toilet in your pocket like a pull through sharpener, but there’s plenty of other ceramics around the house if you’re stuck, especially for the germaphobes among us 🤣😂
