    This Maya tutorial covers the body modeling process from start to finish. I show the steps I take to build the body from simple primitives, and the specific settings and tools I use to make sure everything fits together seamlessly!
    The end result is a well topologized model that will be perfect for animation or sculpting. And I focus on anatomy as well, showing how to match my character to photo reference using image planes.
    This tutorial should be good for beginners to Maya looking to learn how to actually create something cool, once you are familiar with the basic tools and interface.
    I'm James Taylor - I've worked on million-selling video games like Mortal Kombat and NBA Ballers; I've been a web designer, a cel animator, a visual effects artist, and everything in between. Currently I am a professor working in the Chicago area. This video shows the workflow I use to create all my professional character models!

    I've been looking so long for a great tutorial/teacher for autodesk maya. I'm wanting to make my own animations, and all the tutorials I've watched have not been up to par! They are either too fast and confusing, or are too slow and long to follow completely (I hope that makes sense xD at least i know what I mean right?) Anyways! You have the best maya tutorials I have ever seen! This is the most helpful and easy to understand video I've found! You are my favourite youtuber now! And I am going to go an all-night vid watching spree learning everything I can from you. I mean, you made it so simple! basic shapes, simple sculpting, connecting and bridging! I understand now! I'm so excited! YOU just opened the doors for me in to animating! I'm so excited to finally be able to understand FULLY how to start my project and do it RIGHT! =D Thank you thank you thank you thank you!!!!!!!

      You might be right Marcus, but if you practice and make 2,3,4 bodies, the whole process is going to be way faster! Ultimately after a few years you will be able to create the whole character in 20 minutes or so :). And as predecessor said, rigging and weighting, especially the face region is so painful!

    • @MarcusJ973
      @MarcusJ973 7 лет назад

      Polydust ohh wow.. time is of the essence and two to three years is a long stretch. but practice makes perfect I wish I started all this stuff when I was 20 years old, but now I'm 31 and hopefully finishing College in December with a bachelor degree and 3D animation. I'm working on making a space scene involved in my spaceship going around three planets. I need to make a character a spaceship ,a space scene three planets . im using Uranus, Saturn and Earth. I need to make a interior cockpit area of the spaceship also. this project would be my final project of my whole College curriculum and it's taking a very long. I basically have to look for tutorials on everything which are very very hard to find for my specific project . I basically have to make stuff up and how crappy it may look it will have to do . I have a full-time job, full time school it's just way too much to spend hours and hours on this project a few times a week and only getting very very little done if anything. the teachers asked if I made any progress I tell them I'm up for over 12 hours and go very little done. it just takes forever when you're learning from tutorials it's too much to ask for personal help you they would need to be there all day long with you. but I guess it is what it is and I have to deal with it and just keep doing it. I don't know how I'm going to pull off getting some type of internship in the summer without any major skills I'll just have to look at some good tutorials and make some things from there and hopefully get and internship to fill up on the college requirements.

    This Videos are really great! You can learn about optimised workflow and good topology very quickly, even if you already have modeled a character... which you dont find that often, especially not this short, clearly spoken, well illustrated and to the point.

    At 5:17, you mention you use "insert edge loop" to add an edge ring to the chest when you're fixing the anatomy of the shoulder. But you don't, you use "connect components" on 3 specific edges to get the effect you see in the video. Using "insert edge loop" on those edges gets you a completely different result. I'm sure this is addressed in the extended cut version of this video, which admittedly, I haven't seen, and this tutorial is also 6 years old at this point, but I still felt it was worth pointing out for anybody looking at this tutorial today.

    For anyone having difficulty when it comes to the duplicate special tool: Your pivot point needs to be in the centre which you can do by going into a transform mode and pressing D then moving it to the centre. Also, if your mirrored object isn't being automatically modified when you modify the other side it's because you need to choose "instance" in the geometry type section of the duplicate special tool.

    Awesome tutorial! I recommend displaying the hot keys your using, I have no idea how to perform some of the selections your doing. Like being able to drag your mouse across a plane and only select the surface subdivisions or selecting an entire edge row at once. Looking up how to do those things on the internet is so hard to find sometimes through the wordiness of the search. But this is very very helpful, thank you. :)

      Marjorie Pierce see here for some keyboard shortcuts: @maya-tips-for-beginners/ . The ones you mentioned are selection shortcuts, they are performed by holding down shift, alt, or ctrl (or combinations) while selecting.

    Bro. This is the best tutorial ever for character creation in 3D really. Cinema 4D, Blender and even 3DS Max has bullshit character creation tutorials. But really it doesn't matter that this is made in maya or even in other 3D program. The best here is the explanation. It makes so much sense. This method can be applied in almost any 3D program to make character in 3D :). Zbrush is actually the best for character creation. Cuz it makes very detailed high resolution character. But its hard to understand how to make character there. Need to know drawing.
    Anyway. thanks a lot for making this tutorial
