Even in 2019, you are a godsend. Thank you so much for this. As the others have said, I love how you jump straight into it, wasting no time with fluff and nothingburger intros. Just right into it. Really easy to follow along! This may or may not be coming from an animation student who left an assignment to the last minute :D
wow. you're so luckly, that you get to go to school to learn this. I go to school. to understand forgin langauges, and poltiis, and have to go and spend 5 hours trying to make a base mesh for a human, only to discovered that my edge flow is complety wrong.
you know whats amazing about this video. unlike other videos. the stuff he used are pretty much possible on most 3d modeling programs. explains everything deeply without forgetting to organize the topology. 10/10
I must say.. this is absolutely fantastic, and is the best tutorial I have seen for character modelling. Just perfect, I will work on my character using the stuff I am learning from your videos, and I will absolutely recommend your videos to my fellow artists, students and instructors alike. Thank you so very much.
The simpliest and most straightforward body modelling tut i ever found in three year surfing the web! Thanks a lot James. I've also bought your reference pics...well done!
I've been looking so long for a great tutorial/teacher for autodesk maya. I'm wanting to make my own animations, and all the tutorials I've watched have not been up to par! They are either too fast and confusing, or are too slow and long to follow completely (I hope that makes sense xD at least i know what I mean right?) Anyways! You have the best maya tutorials I have ever seen! This is the most helpful and easy to understand video I've found! You are my favourite youtuber now! And I am going to go an all-night vid watching spree learning everything I can from you. I mean, you made it so simple! basic shapes, simple sculpting, connecting and bridging! I understand now! I'm so excited! YOU just opened the doors for me in to animating! I'm so excited to finally be able to understand FULLY how to start my project and do it RIGHT! =D Thank you thank you thank you thank you!!!!!!!
Quick, easy to follow and very informative. I could easily mold your instructions to my own reference images in order to get the character i was looking for. This video was to the quality of a professional, paid for tutorial. Did not expect to find something this great on youtube. You are a legend James
Man, you're a hero!!! You made it so simple while people like me have a head shake to create a nice 'topology for animation' which connects everything well. Thank you so much for sharing this!
I hate learning character modeling but today after 2 years I saw your video and I have made 5 character via using your method. It made character modeling for me so easy. God bless your buddy.
Thanks James Taylor. I been practicing non stop on my 3D Human model sadly I still having trouble especially when is come with uvs. Is there a way to make uvs less stressful when finishing something big? Lastly, are you by any chance doing more tutorials of modeling different things or creatures on Maya?
Mirian Lizeth Delgado make sure to watch my UV Mapping video. The newer versions of Maya make unwrapping much easier, I don't even worry about UVing anymore. I will be doing more modeling tutorials soon, the next big project I have lined up is a female anatomy study, similar to this video here.
dude, you model just like the guy from digital tutors. bridge tool, multi cut tool, creating bevels, adding subdivisions, removing subdivisions. you make it look easy since the video goes so fast. bravo.
That is one of the simple process to create a human body I've ever seen in RUclips! Many many thanks for this & hope we'll get more like this. Thanks once again!
actually even at this speed i find this tutorial great , and the comments are really useful , but i dont think it is for beginners maybe intermediate , anyway it is a really great tutorial so keep up the good job and keep making tutorials so that poor guys that cant afford graphic courses or books (like me :D) could benefit from u :D ,thank u again jimmy
i hear you on that one, this 19 min video will take a noob like my self at least 16 hours to finish. i play the video in slow mo so i can try to copy the video, but you still run into some issues.
You might be right Marcus, but if you practice and make 2,3,4 bodies, the whole process is going to be way faster! Ultimately after a few years you will be able to create the whole character in 20 minutes or so :). And as predecessor said, rigging and weighting, especially the face region is so painful!
Polydust ohh wow.. time is of the essence and two to three years is a long stretch. but practice makes perfect I wish I started all this stuff when I was 20 years old, but now I'm 31 and hopefully finishing College in December with a bachelor degree and 3D animation. I'm working on making a space scene involved in my spaceship going around three planets. I need to make a character a spaceship ,a space scene three planets . im using Uranus, Saturn and Earth. I need to make a interior cockpit area of the spaceship also. this project would be my final project of my whole College curriculum and it's taking a very long. I basically have to look for tutorials on everything which are very very hard to find for my specific project . I basically have to make stuff up and how crappy it may look it will have to do . I have a full-time job, full time school it's just way too much to spend hours and hours on this project a few times a week and only getting very very little done if anything. the teachers asked if I made any progress I tell them I'm up for over 12 hours and go very little done. it just takes forever when you're learning from tutorials it's too much to ask for personal help you they would need to be there all day long with you. but I guess it is what it is and I have to deal with it and just keep doing it. I don't know how I'm going to pull off getting some type of internship in the summer without any major skills I'll just have to look at some good tutorials and make some things from there and hopefully get and internship to fill up on the college requirements.
Man... this tutorial was so good. i have to say it in spanish: sos un GENIO! (you are a genius!) the speed, the clarity of the voice, and the simplicity while every detail is explained, everything. Good work!
i go to full sail which has accelerated classes that are condensed in a month. you just went through my entire character design and creation class in under 20 minutes. Amazing. and I learned more from this than my class

Wow, awesome tutorial. - I always wondered how exactly does one get rid of triangles/ngons in these areas and all I found was hard to understand theoretical graphics I had big trouble to apply - the way you explain and show how it's done is so much easier to follow and understand. Plus you're not one of those sleeping pills but really fast paced and straight forward.
I am sooooooo glad I came across this video first - trying to get back into modeling and I was never taught how to plan your verts properly without triangles XD Thank you!!!
This is a wonderful tutorial and completely changes how I used to model in school. The techniques are sound and you made it easy to understand why you model this way.
This Videos are really great! You can learn about optimised workflow and good topology very quickly, even if you already have modeled a character... which you dont find that often, especially not this short, clearly spoken, well illustrated and to the point.
James Taylor It sure did :) I usually hate the part where I need to solve high poly to low poly when doing topology but I liked the way you worked on that and I am going to adapt that to my workflow ^^ I am definitely subscribing and following your work from now on.
Awesome video! Couldn't have asked for a better way to dive into Maya, both getting to know the controls and make an awesome character aswell. Can't wait to see more of your videos! Subscribed instantly :)

Absolute gold! You are a stellar teacher, and the tutorial is one of the best and most well worded I've ever seen. To the point but leaving nothing out. Thank you!
Thanks for posting this video! They way you took the 5 sided poly and tries and created quads out of them was amazing lol. I have had trouble with trying to figure out how to get rid of tries and n-gons
Best tutorial I've ever seen in my life! even I, who do not have English as my native language. Very didactic, and intuitive! Greetings from Brazil! (sorry ´bout my bad english)
Oh my goodness, I took a Maya class in highschool and this video taught how to create a figure quickly and effectively compared to that one semester class. OMG.
Creates a tutorial on a complicated and time consuming procedure.

Hey, how do you get the wire frame with the translucent shading?
I'm doing 3d modeling and using Maya for competition at school
I untick the "smooth shade all" in the view bay to get it (it looks like that is what he is doing too). Can also make a transparent texture.
This is the single best character topology tutorial series I've seen on RUclips.
