    I always thought about it as Gizmo being the default form and adult, given how social he is and that he doesn't seem to 'want' to break the rules. They are smart enough to understand things, so he might know that if he breaks the rules, the evil gremlins come out. His species might need to have specific conditions to reproduce correctly. The gremlins are like cancer babies. Cells that aren't reproducing correctly and happen to be embryos. In both movies, he tries to help the humans kill the offspring because they are aberrations. That was my head canon at least.

      No, mogwi are naturally sneaky and mean. Gizmo is nice because nice traits are recessive in the species and hes just a unique recessive one. Other nice ones can be born by water it's just very very rare

      I thought this too, like he was an adult so he was more mature and not into mischief, like people are. We grow up and mature, well some of us anyway. But yeah or maybe the good ones get birthed by the "Bad ones". Like they birth their opposite. But yeah that's my head cannon. Or maybe he got dropped on his head by the old Chinese dude at some point and has brain damage like Goku from Dragonball, and Dragonball Z. Yeah did y'all know Goku is actually a Brain damaged Saiyan? I didn't realize that til I was an adult.

      I think the book says any Mogwai created directly from the scientist were docile, but ANY Mogwai created from using water on an original would be malicious and murderous. Since Gizmo was an 'Original' Mogwai he had the docile personality, until the Rambo bit 😁😁

      The gremlins are pretty mean to Gizmo so either there is some innate difference caused by the waterproduction method or they really don’t like that he doesn’t join them in transforming. The fact that a young Gizmo never transformed (was never an unruly adolescent) and yet learned about the transformation process (and thereby survived previous gremlin violence) suggests some differences between them.

    I read the novelization back when I was a kid. I remember the mogwais being created backstory but from what I remember it was some aliens that had made them, they send them to other planets as diplomatic gifts. Cute, smart enough to be entertaining and I believed implied to be immortal. The problem was that a ship went through radiation that mutated the mogwai destined to be given to earth. The 'rules' are all from this mutation and unforeseen. So on top of everything else, Gizmo is hundreds, if not thousands of years old. The reason why he's so well behaved is because he was the intentionally designed original bio pet.

    About the chimney story. I am a chimney sweep from northern Wisconsin and I've very, very rarely seen a chimney flu that is big enough to climb down. They do exist but mainly in super old buildings. I guess sweeps used to be able to crawl into the flu of old fire places but it's really not a thing. Most flus for stoves are 6-8 inches in diameter and fireplaces are 8x8, 8x12 or 12x12. Inches. There are exceptions and odd sizes but 99% of the time that's what I use. Good luck crawling down a 12 inch hole.

      It was the practice, up until around the 1910s, to have children climb down the chimney to clean it. Chimney sweeps used to in fact just buy kids to climb around inside chimneys. Terrible, yes. Fascinating, also yes.
      Edit: I should note that this was mostly in England. They didn't allow slavery as we think about it, but you could pay the parents and the kids would get a few pennies a week.

    • @analogicaleuphimism2078
      @analogicaleuphimism2078 2 года назад +42

      Just because something is called a demon or an evil spirit doesn't always make it supernatural.
      A lot of animals, especially predators, were viewed with mysticism by ancient people. For example many cultures throughout the world viewed wolves, bears, and tigers as spirits, reincarnated ancestors, and just generally supernatural beings.
      But we know now that they aren't magical entities, just animals our ancestors barely knew anything about other than they're good at hiding from people and really dangerous; hence were equated as supernatural spirits.
      A mogwai in their universe could just be an animal with capabilities that are not fully understood yet. Or probably Aliens... this is an 80's movie.

    • @seeker38
      @seeker38 2 года назад +17

      @analogicaleuphimism2078 I could see it going either way. The mythological Mogwai begin breeding once it starts to rain which furthers the association, but yes the myth could also in-setting have come about because of the real creature.

After Gremlins 2 it's also clear that newborn Mogwai are always trouble, which suggests that the Mogwai either always avoid reproducing or whenever they do it's a major catastrophe

      The 'Official' novel says this too. Gizmo knows all about Gremlins and how they come about, s'why he sighs and shakes his head after the new Mogwai are created, and says "uh-oh" when he sees the cocoons after they get fed. The book has a whole long section on the new mogwai discovering their weaknesses, and the thing about water making them reproduce is only discovered when Billy creates a new one for the scientist guy using one of the new Mogwai, otherwise Stripe wouldn't have known to go for the indoor pool at the Rec Centre. The Mogwai that are left then begin to repopulate until another eats after midnight and the cycle repeats.
      With replication based on water, and a lack of light, a Mogwai could inadvertently step into a puddle of water and cause the replication to happen.

      Would be difficult, if he was an unruly adolescent like the offshoots, to avoid “teaching” him to be nice without him sneaking food and transforming without rigorous supervision especially if he wasn’t aware of the process or was biologically driven towards it. That also suggests the gremlins are evil rather than just really mischievous and carefree. They were comparatively tame with Phoebe in the bar and seemed to truly enjoy Snow White which suggests it may have been possible to reach some kind of impasse with them.

  • @Prince_Cheddar

    For the whole size and heating thing, I think it's called the square-cube law. Kurzgesagt did a video about it. "when an object undergoes a proportional increase in size, its new surface area is proportional to the square of the multiplier and its new volume is proportional to the cube of the multiplier." Thus, if you increase in size, the amount the surface area increases at a slower rate than the amount of living matter it contains. The larger the creature, the more internal matter they have inside their bodies in proportion to their surface area.
    For warm-blooded creatures, heat is produced by the cells metabolism and heat can only escape the body at the surface. Thus, a small creature needs to have a fast metabolism, since it's losing so much heat relative to its mass, while a large creature can have a slow metabolism, since heat from the inside has to make its way through all those guts to reach the surface..
    Cold blooded creatures would be the inverse I believe. A large creature needs hotter external temperature to warm up its proportionally larger guts while a smaller creature has less guts proportional to its surface area. Hence large reptiles like crocodiles only really exist in warm environments.

    I always liked to interperate the "After Midnight" third rule as "after the moon reaches its zenith" is when the unsafe time frame begins, as for when it is safe again to feed them I'd argue it would be either A: after the sun rises as avoiding sunlight is a huge part of their survival instinct, or B(worst case scenario): after the sun reaches it's zenith. I mostly ignore the daylight savings factor and focus on the celestial cycles as the creatures would likely care more about that than something human's invented to aid farmers lol.

    I read the 'Official' novel that came out for this, it goes on to say the Mogwai were created as alien pets, their creator (Murgentenum, or something? I can't remember how to spell it now, I read it almost 30 years ago) found out about the mutation problem and destroyed all but two. Both were somehow sent to earth, and during WW2 someone found the other Mogwai and that led to the gremlins in WW2 that Futterman was talking about. The book is far more gruesome than the movie, basically the gremlins killed almost everyone they came across as they rampaged.

    The gremlins have always reminded me of the orks from Warhammer 40K, mostly in their temperament, seeming instinctual talent for using technology and reproduction. I mean sure they are not as dangerous as orks overall but the similarities are there.
    If you take away the weakness to sunlight then the gremlins would fit right in with an ork horde without much issue. They are inherently violent and callous, not caring even a little when their own are killed. We see them find amusement in this, actually.
    They enjoy causing carnage and chaos on a massive scale as well, and can utilize pretty much any random piece of tech minutes after coming into contact with it. And with their ability to reproduce simply by getting wet, a single gremlin can spawn hundreds within minutes.
    These natural advantages would make them a horribly difficult species to keep under control or even wipe out. It makes a whole lot more sense to me if the Mogwai/gremlins are the result of some alien biological weapons experiment rather than being a naturally occurring species.
    Similar to how the orks were created by the Old Ones as a biological weapon. Get rid of the vulnerability to sunlight and the gremlins would have a decent chance of overrunning humanity given enough time to spread and grow in numbers. Or at the very least be a constant threat.

    To me, the two forms were analogous to grasshoppers and locusts. The mammalian form isn't a juvenile so much as the "default" state of the species. The reptilian form arises under conditions where food is abundant, this could explain why being fed after midnight is a requirement. I imagine that their bodies are accustomed to long periods of fasting so introducing food several hours into a time when they should be asleep (as dictated by concentrations of hormones such as ghrelin and melatonin) could signal to the body that there is a large surplus of food and thus transformation into their version of a locust: the "'gromlin." This form is quicker and more aggressive, which would allow it to spread faster and farther than it's mammalian form. I imagine that the reptilian form would eventually produce mammalian offspring if there was a suitable biological trigger such as a shortage of food.
