"Look at me I am the Captain now"
I have a feeling is going to become a classic movie quote.
I have actually used it already.
How right you were!!
john leto you called it!
You weren't wrong my friend
No tricks Irish.
The film’s very well acted, well casted, realistic, thrilling & is terrifically directed by A director who knows character & stories. (89%) (4.5/5 stars) (positive)
Captain Phillips had me riveted to the last. Film of the year so far, for me.
and Sorry Mayo, you are usually the sound of reason but have to agree with Mark- i lean towards Paul's side about globalization. It had a rare quality that with just few dialogues and shots it made a point. "You come to our waters and fish" simple things like that.
Can't wait to see this - as advised, I watched A Highjacking last night and was blown away from the real-life elements present in that film (much of the ship's crew in the film were the real-life crew, many of whom had been taken hostage in the past). Will be very interesting to see the way Greengrass tells the story of the Maersk, which is inherently going to be more gripping and dramatic due to the way they handled the situation but also from Greengrass' direction. Look forward to it.
best movie of the year...
look forward to this. i like Paul Greengrass movies because he understands that life is not populated with 'good guys' or 'bad guys', but 'guys' who do what they have to do in the name of what they 'think' is right...
It's really a brilliant film, loved it
Classic flappy hands from the good Dr. Really looking forward to catching up with this.
sooo need to see it!
Mark is an excellent film critic. I just wish he'd say all the syllables in all the words and open his reviews with a word other than 'so'.
Looking forward to this movie.!
I wanna see the boat movie
chunder along? 7:55
I think he was trying to say chunter.
Just saw this. The lead pirate is fairly excellent. He resembles an alien from outside space more than a human. The other pirates are fairly stereotypical movie bad guys, especially the 'shouty one'.
Good movie, slightly lacking in tension in parts probably due to the fact you know how this pans out but when the Navy turns up I kind of got the feeling this was just one big PR exercise. All in all though a good movie.
Paul Greengrass makes Michael Bay look like a whole bitch, remarkable filmmaker.
I’d give it a 5/10
Well.......
When will the Gravity Review be up??
I know this is 7 years later but I come to this review straight from the gravity one lol thought I'd share!
Question: has Kermode ever given a bad, or atleast qualified, review of any movie whose stars/makers were interviewed on the show?

Ah, well there is one exception.
I've never seen Tom Hanks do a bad movie.
You've never seen the Dan Brown adaptations?
@@rafaelmarkos4489 Hey, I represent those remarks
Terrifying film
Thank God Clint Eastwood didn't make this movie LOL
Among the worst of pseudo-intellectuals: professional critics, television evangelists, journalists... this list could go on a ways. But, chief on my personal list? Professional critics. Why? Because no one should ever be allowed to professionally opine on the creative work of another without first demonstrating a level of proficiency in the discipline upon which they intend to pass judgement, that would be construed by a body of practitioners of that discipline as meeting a minimum level that provides for a first hand knowledge of what it takes to perform that discipline successfully at a professional level.
Which is why doctors, for example, have no critics, other than other doctors, or patients.
A professional critic is NEVER a pier of those who practice a given discipline.
You okay with non-professional critics?
Every one of us is a non-professional critic. It's commonly referred to as; "...having an opinion"...
I’m a professional musician who also worked as a lecturer on ba performance degree. I have a friend who I regard as an ‘expert audience’. We go and see bands, and I always listen to her thoughts as they are really well informed and useful and generate fun and interesting discussion. Just an alternative viewpoint.
@@DornAndGrant Lovely. Not sure about the relevence, but cool.
So... okay then.
Doctors and filmakers are completely different professions with completely different stakes. Criticism is a completely subjective area of discussion, all critics of film, music or any art have different tastes and their discussions allude to this. In terms of your doctors/patients analogy, one could liken the relationship of director/audience to be similar. Also, who cares, just watch the fucking film and form your own opinion, i find mark and simon's film discussions entertaining but ik its not sone kind of gospel. In no way does their opinion on a film affect yours, and if so oh well.
