I think a lot of the work he does is material selection. The pieces that he uses even for structure are all super beautiful, minimal knots, straight grain, etc. Plus he does a LOT of prep on pieces that will be exposed
I am a wood worker and I can say with certainty that Asian carpenters are the very best in the world and they have been for centuries. This stair case will stand for 500 years or longer.

The Japanese carpenters are very skillful and many techniques dated way back to the Tang Dynasty of China.
