A close friend of my dad served in the Marines and landed with the third wave at Iwo Jima. I was honored that about a year before Bill passed away, he actually shared some of his experiences. I don't know why he picked me to talk with as his family later told me that he had never told them any thing about his service. I'll never forget when he got this strange look on his face and gave me this faraway look and said " why am I here and most of the guys I was with never made it off that island"? Bill was such a little, soft-spoken man that you would never have thought that at one time, he was a Marine and fought thru one of the most intense battles in Marine Corp history. Semper Fi Bill

This episode and the Battle of Okinawa are the two which hit me the hardest. The first time I saw my Wife was back in 1978 at the Memphis International Airport, she was wearing the Marine Dress Greens which Sgt. Lena Basilone was wearing, which she still has. I gave her a ride to NATTC Millington for her school and dropped her off at the WM (Woman Marine) barracks. Two months later we ran into each other and started dating. we have been dating ever since. She did her four years and got out, I did my three years active, then three years Reserves, which I turned into 38 years 45 day Reserves and retired. I will comment on Okinawa once you post it.

They still have a parade for Basilone in his hometown in NJ every year.
Ironically, one of the reasons we dropped the two atom bombs on Japan was because they put up such a hard fight on these islands, the US generals estimated it might cost a million soldiers lives to take over Japan. So a reason they dropped the bombs was to save American lives.

A few things for this episode.
Much of the inspiration for the training and battle sequences of this episode are based off of Chuck Tatum’s book Red Blood Black Sand. Tatum being one of the two men John trains by themselves and who he orders not to leave their position come hell or high water. Though in reality John isn’t the one who trained Tatum’s company as depicted. But he was among the men John ordered to hold their ground and was one of the last men to see John alive.
There’s a lot of conflicting reports by supposed witnesses on how John was KIA. The last thing known for certain was he helped some men set up in a crater and told them not to leave (Tatum being among them) and he went back to get more men. Some reports claim John was shot and survived for long enough for a medic to reach him, but he succumbed to his wounds. Others report he was hit by a mortar along with several others and killed instantly. So many men were killed on Iwo Jima that no one story of what exactly happened is more credible than the another so we’ll probably never know for certain.
Lena received the news of her husband’s death on her birthday. She never remarried.

The Battle of Pelelieu delayed the Battle of Iwo by 8 months. Those were 8 months that gave the Japanese time to fortify Iwo Jima. The Japanese were surprised that the US did not attack at Iwo when the defense of the Island were still weak. Furthermore, after the fighting had basically stopped and the Marines were ordered to leave the next day, they were required to turn in their ammunition. Some Marines held on to a clip or two sensing that something wasn't quite right. The night before they were to leave hundreds of Japanese soldiers launched a bansai charge killing and wounding dozens of Marines. The last Japanese soldiers on Iwo Jima surrendered 2 years after the war ended. The last Japanese soldier surrendered in the Philippines in 1972.

I have set it once and I'll say it again, during World War II there were two names that were known by everyone. In the European theater it was Audie Murphy and in the Pacific it was John Basilone, there does not exist a more famous Marine than him. He was one hell of a man and Marine, Semper Fi y vaya con Dios. ♥️
I am sure every Marine on Iwo Jima was grateful for having Gummy Basilone leading them and trained them. It reminds me of a lesson I learned a long time ago, the more you sweat in training the less you bleed in battle. 😢

I watched BOB when it originally aired back in 2001. I bought it on DVD and I've watched it many times. I didn't see The Pacific when it originally aired. I waited until I found it on DVD. An unpopular opinion, I've never heard anyone else say this. But I prefer The Pacific over BOB.
Thanks for watching, especially with the historical context.

E-WO, not pronounced I-wo, even though it is spelled that way. Not coming for you :-), just pointing it out. While it was not covered in detail due to Basilone dying on day 1, it was the iconic battle of the Pacific War for the Marines. Bear in mind that casualties are KIA, WIA and MIA, (Killed, Wounded and Missing respectively). The Marines largest number of casualties were in wounded. ALL the Japanese casualties, save for a very small handful, were killed. That is the difference. The Japanese suffered far more KIA, the Marines took more total casualties. Don't worry about the voice and video not synching up at the end. I reminded me of the old Kung Fu movies that were translated out of Chinese when I was a kid. Their mouth would still be going after the voice had stopped :-). You do a great job and we all appreciate that you try your best. Thank you.

Looking on wiki, I don't think more American soldiers died than Japanese. They had more "casualties", which includes wounded.
So if wiki is correct, far more Japanese died, but the total of American wounded was higher. Yeah.. minor technicality.
I assume military is focused on casualties than deaths because for an officer, all that matters is how many men can still fight.
