  • The crabbing industry in California is under siege: from toxic algae, climate change, and, some argue, Big Oil. We spent a day on a fishing boat to find out what’s really threatening commercial crabbing, and what can be done about it.

      I think I'd be just as happy to see big oil companies required to use some notable percentage of their profits to invest in and develop clean energy. Most of them purport to be "energy companies" anyway rather than merely oil producers, but when push comes to shove they use their money and influence to downplay their products' contribution to climate change and invest in new ways to tap into previously un- or under-exploited oil deposits (ironically now in the arctic seeing as ice pack has been consistently reduced) - and all because that's what is good for the bottom line, for investors. I get that developing new energy technology is expensive, but we did it at the turn of the last century for oil, and we can do it again for wind, solar, geothermal, etc. if the motivation is right (and sadly economic disincentives are usually the most potent way to encourage individuals and companies to make a change).

    Climate change is impacting other farming/food industries also. More floods wipe out crops in low areas; stronger storms and drought delay or kill crops in others. In my lifetime alone, I’ve seen my hometown nearly give up on small scale (family owned) farming. Corn, wheat, soybeans, milo, tobacco... all gone except the largest farms.
    I’m really sad to see these industries and ways of life disappearing due to global warming. 😞

      It is sort of already too late but, while humans have definitely played a big role in it, our planet is also going through a natural warming cycle. Nuclear fusion would really help us right now but nuclear fission is a reliable, clean technology with virtually no environmental impact and is more than capable of meeting our energy needs. Promoting better farming techniques, building sanctuaries for endangered species in your area and promoting livestock grazing techniques that counter creeping desertification are all wonderful ways that you can personally start making a difference.

If you don't want to go vegetarian, you can just choose to eat less meat - reduce your meat portions, incorporate more vegetarian meals into your diet - and switch some of your meals from red meat to things like poultry. You know, with the right technology, sailing wouldn't be that unforseeable.. Of course it is cost prohibitive, and it is much easier to use what is basically 100 year old technology with inprovements. The technology exists to make sails the size of square miles, which could move even the greatest containerships in the world. All the technology exists, just not the political will (or lobbying) or the capita for it. All of these problems could be solved however in my opinion.. Goikg further in to economics, it probably makes no sense for 100 boats to fish, where one large boat could do the job much more efficiently.

I am however sufficiently technocratic, that I see other solutions in society that would solve the issue for an unemployed fisherman. Furthermore I think that wasting resources for multiple boats or any resource for that matter is just waster and is in part what creates the problems themselves...

Nuclear is the best option, i just dont think we have enough nuclear fuel to replace oil.

    I love how we blame the oil companies, yet the average person either owns 2 vehicles, or they get the biggest one they can get. Ride a bike to and from work, walk to get your groceries, then you can complain about the Oil Company's. Even then, its your community thats addicted to it that is to blame. Supply = DEMAND.

    These complex ecosystems developed over millions of years to be balanced. Humans have destroyed millions of years of evolution in half a century. 😢
    Our planet is dying. Make small changes like eating less meat/animal products, conserving water, using less plastic/recycling, and using public transportation more (if you have access).
    If everyone did this, it would make a world of difference. 🌍

    Big Oil is only supplying to meet the demand. It's only when demand stop, supply will stop.
    That means we consumers have to reduce our ever increasing consumption. Only then we can see real changes.

    • @cloudofthought
      @cloudofthought 5 лет назад

      It's not that simple. They knowingly misled the public and influenced politicians to ignore problems that are now coming to fruition. You could say corporate influence shouldn't be so powerful, and I agree, but that doesn't take away from the fact they have had a chance to do the right thing, and chose not to. The right thing being to be honest, invest heavily in renewables asap, and work to switch technology infrastructure asap.

      I never said it will be easy. Even in the video, the crabmen(?) admitted they use fossil fuel to run their ship (and not mentioned refrigeration, this is important for deep sea or long sea journey). Without cheap (fossil) energy, they could never go far out at sea and haul back ship full of crabs to make the trip worthwhile and economical. Or eat less crab.
      Everything is dependent on energy. Sure is cheap, currency wise. But we are also paying with our survival on this planet.
      Of course the best scenario is to find alternative energy to maintain the status quo of our consumption. Failing of which, as what I have said: consume less. But we're too egoistical to admit where is the real source of the problem.
