How can the VA treat you for a disability and not give you a diagnosis?

  • The VA is responsible for providing medical care to veterans who have service-connected disabilities. In some cases, however, the VA may provide treatment for symptoms or conditions without giving a specific diagnosis. This can happen for several reasons:
Lack of evidence: The veteran may not have enough evidence to establish a clear connection between their disability and their military service. This could be due to a lack of medical records, difficulty obtaining records from the military, or other factors.
Differential diagnosis: The veteran may have symptoms that are similar to multiple conditions, making it difficult to establish a specific diagnosis. In these cases, the VA may provide treatment for the most likely condition without giving an official diagnosis.
Evolving conditions: Some disabilities, such as traumatic brain injury or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), may not have clear diagnostic criteria and can present differently in each individual. As a result, the VA may provide treatment based on symptoms rather than a specific diagnosis.
Regardless of the reason, it is important for veterans to understand that they can still receive treatment and benefits from the VA even without a formal diagnosis. In fact, the VA has specific programs in place to help veterans manage their symptoms and improve their overall well-being.
One such program is the Individual Unemployability (IU) program, which provides financial support to veterans who are unable to work due to a service-connected disability. This program takes into account not only diagnosed disabilities but also any symptoms or conditions that may impact a veteran's ability to work.
The VA also has specialized clinics and programs for conditions like PTSD and traumatic brain injury, where treatments are focused on managing symptoms and improving quality of life. These programs may include therapy, medication, and other forms of support.
It is also important for veterans to continue seeking medical care and documenting their symptoms even if they do not have a specific diagnosis. This can help build a stronger case for service connection in the future and ensure that the veteran receives the appropriate treatment and benefits from the VA.
In conclusion, while receiving a formal diagnosis from the VA can be helpful in establishing service connection for disability benefits, it is not always necessary. The VA is committed to providing treatment and support to all veterans with service-connected disabilities, regardless of whether or not they have a specific diagnosis. As such, veterans should not hesitate to seek medical care and support from the VA even if they do not have a clear diagnosis for their disability. So, it is important for veterans to stay informed about their rights and options when seeking treatment from the VA. There are many resources available through the VA and other organizations that can provide guidance and assistance in navigating the complex process of receiving disability benefits and treatment. Remember, your service to our country deserves proper recognition and care, so don't be afraid to reach out for help when needed.

I was granted 30% for PTSD by a VA contractor psychologist. I appealed the decision and 5 years layer was denied my appeal. I appealed the denial. I decided to google the psychologist and found that the VA had fired her shortly after my exam for not following VA guidelines. She wrote an article where she claimed most vets fake their PTSD. I copied her publication and sent to the appeals board and asked how many other vets had been sent to her while knowing that she was biased against vets. Amazingly they quickly granted me 70% and scheduled another C&P by a VA employed psychologist. She claimed my condition had worsened and granted 100% from that day. No backpay to original date. If I had not caught their deceit I would still be at 30%.

I was at the Pentagon on 9/11 to 9/13. Full hellish shift. Months later they offered us counseling and informed us if we were found to have “mental issues” we’d lose our security clearance and be reassigned to Ft. Belvoir until our ETS. I struggled through the next 17 years to retirement without a squeak. Two marriages many altercations with superiors and ultimately retired at E-6. Now I’m trying to deal with my issues and get the rating I deserve. It’s the only battle I have left.

I had to contact a patient advocate because I was being treated for THREE different ailments, (one of which I had been prescribed medication for), that appeared NOWHERE on my problems list. Luckily....my patient advocate was a SAVAGE. She contacted my doctors had all 3 conditions added to my records (problems list) within 2 weeks.

I was at Aberdeen Proving Ground in between the Pentagon and Ground Zero. When the 1st olane hit we were called to formation. Basically briefed on the situation and told to return to the barracks. Knowing there were still planes in the air. Shortly after the Pentagon was attacked. They made a new "clarification that if you an prove that at any point you were in fear for your life either domestically or abroad of a terrorist attack due to proximity. I don't know how mych worde it can get then being at a bomb testing site in between the 2 out of the 3 strike points of the worst attack in American history.

I had to send a message to my husbands va dr because they stated on his last visit that he did not have depression. I told her he was never asked any of those questions. I sent her the part of his records that said he was not depressed. I will be checking up to see what happens.

Yes, I’m finding out the same thing….. for example, when I go to a Va regular appointment or Va emergency room , they asked the first several questions from the mental health questionnaire and nothing else but later on….. I find that they have put answers down that I did not say for the rest of the mental health questionnaire….. I feel that they are doing this maybe is not some conspiracy but out of laziness for not wanting to conduct the whole questionnaire.

Dear Robin, You observation is the tip of the iceberg. I have been in the VA system for over 35 years. I am 100% rated for shrapnel wounds during combat & PTSD. Doctors omit things during doctor visits and even lie on these reports all designed to discredit the veteran for claims or used to reduce benefits in the future. Read carefully all comments from previous visits and make sure you specifically state that your husband is depressed. Additionally, I had to go to an outside neurologist for a problem that the VA said was all in my imagination. I went to the most experienced neurologist (40 years) in the area. The doctor said I had Parkinson's and had it for at least 10 years. I went back to the VA and they got angry with and tried to retaliate. This is not a conspiracy; it is a plan to reduce benefits in the future for all veterans.

What ii know is written and secured for release after ii'm gone.

If insomnia is listed in your "problem list" that's enough to file a claim for it. The challenge you're going to have is you will likely need an objective medical opinion (nexus letter) that states your insomnia is "at least as likely as not" or "more likely that not" caused/aggravated by your tinnitus.

VA Mental gives mental diagnosis codes. VA Med does not. My path is private Dr diagnosis, hand a record copy to the VA Dr, then record symptoms with VA every quarter. VA Sleep writes good notes. True careful what you say to VHA people as they expertly write down clue words and add their own context. I read my Blue Button report and correct it after every visit.

They'll treat you, but not give a diagnosis..Because they'd have to admit to culpability and then have to be financially responsible.
