Netflix put a disclaimer at the end. Donnie the character was typing 'this is a true story '. This is different from Netflix asserting it at the beginning
@@CommerceMeetsLaw To be honest they are very different, the only similarity is that Martha has Scottish background and is plus size, at least in appearence is much different, but also i think it is unfair to put the blame on Gadd or Netflix, because the harassment came out of the Internet, the show never identified any of the characters and the only message of the show was more or less "stalking is bad and the laws against stalking in the UK are bad", it was more or less to open a public discourse around sexual abuse and stalking for male victims Other than that i think this latest internet witch hunt warrants a look from regulatory authorities in order to prevent the internet taking things too far whatever the target is innocent or guilty of a crime the internet is not a court of law and harassment should bare the same consequences as what would happen in real life. For me, this "cancel culture" like response is ruining a lot of good things
@@castlerock58they didn’t say “sent to prison” in parliament. And it has been confirmed by several sources she was getting care at a mental health institution… I have a feeling that was a court ordered situation, due criminal behavior. So that would be a form of criminal conviction, but not reported the same way as a jail sentence. Either they change things or they don’t. So why isn’t she mad they call the character Martha? That’s not her real name.
Netflix is telling the truth they stated that the part where she went to prison was fictional, and they changed some of what actually happened and dramatized the character. The story is based on the authors experiences, and some parts are added.
@castlerock58 no they stated and author stated that that part was fiction and didn't happen in real life, and the story is based on his experiences not exactly what happened do some fact-checking. It was not exactly what happened.
4:25 in none of this would not have happened if the fans didn't go digging everyone (should) know that shows, movies, stories are going to be dramatized compared to the real events, after all you got to keep the audience entertained enough to want more as far as I'm aware, Richard did not want this to happen
I don’t think he cared actually he could have used any woman to play the actress - anyone digging to see who the man was that was sexually assaulting him ? Nah didn’t think so , best not to disclose whoever that monster was ?
I have been a victim of a very poorly stalked and she showed all the signs of one and he has definitely been a victim of more than one indevidual,.I have trouble understanding why anyone person would think it could or would be acceptable to drag either of these people out in public to accuse either when only a trained psychologist should be in the room.
You all cannot seriously want the woman who stalked harassed and abused Richard to WIN and for her to once again humiliate and ruin his life. Jfc he’s a victim and a survivor.
I didn't watch the show or the Piers Morgan interview but if someone chooses Piers Morgan to talk to I think it immediately reduces their credibility. He is definitely not the voice for survivors. He definitely invited her because his vile audience loves an alleged abuser getting their words in.
That's true, indeed one of the victims that gone to that show to rebut what Harvey was alleging against her Piers did pretty terrible behind her back in a separate debate without the presence of the victim calling Harvey "a bit of a troll" while that victim in the interview shared how Harvey had a pattern of lying to child protective services about the people she was stalking and harassing to send them to their homes as retaliation against them
Behind closed doors the folks at Netflix are surely rubbing their hands together. Nothing generates interest in a show like nasty press. As someone who worked in the cinema industry for years we secretly loved it when there was protests and outrage over a film because it meant we were going to be very busy. The old entertainment industry adage is true - there really is no such thing as bad publicity. There have been some very cleverly orchestrated examples of this over the years, I wouldn't mind betting this is a veiled publicity ploy. It's been done before. Everyone involved gets compensated, Netflix gets a zillion views, everyone wins. If your product is stagnating create a scandal. That's movie marketing 101.
By the nature of the medium of tv/film, internal emotional struggles have to be converted to on camera actions. The opening “this is a true story” is typed out. This matches up with the character typing out his story with Martha in the final episode. Cause this is DONNY’S true story. But the disclaimer at the end makes clear this is only based on Gadd’s story. So, for instance, the scene where Martha assaults him in the canal. That probably didn’t happen… but it was a way to explain the emotion gadd felt of being sexually attacked by this woman’s behavior, with nobody to see or stop it. It conveyed the emotion with action. Most of real life is nuanced and internal. That’s why we allow artistic license to externalize these things. Fiona is clearly an unhealthy woman with mental illness that creates feelings of fear in her victims. If gadd had decided to explain this experience using puppets or a world with dragons, it’s still an expression of the emotional experience she subjected him to. So the only issue I see is piers Morgan exploiting a vulnerable woman, feeding her illness and making the internet trolling issue worse for her.
There are an abundance of talented and skilled writers who are able to draw from true events without the hurt and humiliation Gadd inflicted upon this woman ! I didn’t actually enjoy the show very much, felt it very egocentric and it was far from funny or real! But what was sad about the whole thing was that this story set a stereotype for stalking and unfortunately there is no stereotype. I hope she gets justice!
I hope Fiona wins. It's sad how society still is so misogynistic, and enjoys attacking women. And attacking people for their childhood traumas that we all have is outrageous.
richard gadd lied about 90% of the show - he even says on the show he would do anything for money he reports his stalker but keeps going back to his rapist - its ridiculous people believe that show,, yes fiona seems mad however his inability to tell the truth will be pricey............

That's true, although the lack of differentiation between the real and fictional 'Martha Scott' might be a serious concern for Netflix.

They testified, under oat, before parliament that the show was true and that the woman was convicted of stalking and sent to prison.
@@castlerock58 Well that's true, but it's irrelevant to the court, there might be repercussions but it must be a separate case in the UK

Completely agreed, both parties have done it purely for publicity.

Are you still contemplating on who’s telling the truth? Really?
My thoughts is to download the show now before it gets pulled off the air forever 💀
