OCTOBER 2020 NOTE: I am not looking to do further instalments of this series at present as we are no longer in full lockdown.
A little thing like a global pandemic and lockdown is not going to prevent further boat videos on this channel so I present the first in what may become a regular "virtual tour" series, as we meet Dimitrios and Carine Theologitis from Brussels and have a look around their amazing narrowboat Galene, which is filled with ingenious design touches.

Great video as always.
Be also good if people could give you video snippets to blend in.
Did I note from one of the shots that there isn't any solar on top?
As others have mentioned, understanding a bit more about how well heating works electric only would be great.
There was some video (I included the one clip of it being named) but video has to fit the narrative which isn't always the case.
You're right, there is no solar on the boat. When we are on the boat we are cruising nearly all the time or plugged in. Thus the longest we stay put would be 3-4 days, and for that the batteries are more than enough. When we move again we do it on diesel and it is a matter of a few hours to get them topped up again. Us being (relative) beginners we opted for a clean roof where things cannot snag.
As to the heating, I may have expressed myself incorrectly. The heating of the cabin is diesel. It's only the hot water calorifier which has an electric coil and that we can turn on whenever, e.g. in summer when the heater is not running and the diesel engine has been off for some time. Hope this clarifies
@@dimitriostheologitis7154 Thanks for sharing, very interesting!
Dimitrios Theologitis Hi Dimitrios. We live aboard our boat and have been thinking about how we can transform our stern cabin into a part-time office. Your clever hinged desk looks ideal. I wondered if you could share an image of the hinge mechanism or provide any details of the manufacturer? Many thanks for your help.
@@duncanbridge1 hi -- and would have very gladly have done so but we're not on the boat at the moment :-( It's a bespoke parallelogram mechanism, devised by the builders themselves. It's made up of two sets of L-shaped and flat rods. When the table plate is up one of them moves sideways and clicks in place so the table stays up. A picture would explain it better than a thousand words.
Welcome to mail me at

so as to have a reminder to do it, but it could be July because of...
If (Let's be positive, When) I win Lotto and have my own narrow boat built, Dimitrios and Carine Theologitis are designing it. What a stunning boat.
Fan Fair my thoughts exactly!
Oh David, that was lovely! What a charming couple and what smart ideas they had! I especially liked how they drew the true layout of their boat on the floor to see if it would work. Oh yes...one other cute thing I noticed......you microphone cover very much resembles the feathers on the emu in your picture on the wall....same color too.Enjoying all this in Benson, Vermont , USA!!!
Yes, the remote interview worked for me. His wife was a joy.
Very interesting and can't wait for the next edition.
By way of a change I feel compelled to leave a comment; what a thoroughly enjoyable interview with a very likable, intelligent and interesting couple. Kudos!
Again, using those skills acquired as a reporter and presenter to find content, edit it and provide something useful to your audience. There are several narrow boating channels that I subscribe to and enjoy immensely, but your work stands head and shoulders above the rest. Your penchant for puns, however... oh, hell, they tickle me as well.
You are too kind!
What an enchanting couple. I enjoyed every second of this video. Your interviewing skills certainly were apparent here; you’re brilliant. Looking forward to seeing more of this type post in the future. The corona virus gave you lemons that you turned into lemonade! Bravo.🏆
Another absolutely wonderful vlog! Thank you very much.
An excellent, and entertaining vlog. Well done!
What a wonderful couple. If the world was full of people like you and these folks what a better place it would be.
You are so kind...
Splendid video Dave. I hope you have the opportunity to do more like this.
What a wonderful couple, thank you for introducing them to us.
Well that went so good I would actually say it’s one of the best boat videos I have ever seen. Seriously well done.
This got me thinking about hybrid boats so I went to Google to have a look and it suggested your videos on hybrid/electric boats!
Lovely couple, very interesting conversation! You are the best David!
Thank you Dimitrios and Carine for letting us come aboard!
And of course thank you David for putting together this lovely episode for us
Great journalist coverage of a extremely well thought out narrow boat. I look forward in seeming more of your lock down topics ; )
What an inspiring vlog. A beautiful boat well designed and lots and lots of ingenius ideas implemented in the tecnic and the fit-out of the boat. Thank you to Corinne and Demitrius for showing us their boat, and thank you for a very interesting vlog.
Karine and Dimitrios, your boat is a beautiful piece of design and fabrication. I also am a fan of stainless steel and your kitchen is beautiful. Please accept my admiration for the ingenuity and fabrication of the design. I suspect your builders must have thoroughly enjoyed themselves building this beauty.
Thank you for sharing and thank you, David for coming up with an exemplary idea to help see us through this little planetary hiccup we are all going through. I sincerely hope it has legs and I strongly suspect it will carry on for a good while.
My best from Eastern Ontario.
Thank you so much for your kind comments! We did indeed enjoy planning this boat and obviously the builders rose to the occasion and took pleasure in creating it. Otherwise they would not have invested so much in the detailing of the boat, it is evident whichever way you look. We are very impressed that you follow narrowboating from your part of the world and we wish that you also expoerience such wonderful moments.
What a delightful couple! Great interview
Thank you for your kind comment
What a fantastic boat and a lovely couple. It was more than a peek around a boat as we got the background to the build. A great interview. More please!
What a great boat, and a lovely couple, too!
Beautiful boat, and lovely guests! The magic that is Europe: a Greek married to a Belgian, speaking perfect English, employing British tradespeople and buying British goods, to travel through England.
Oh, thank you so much for the kind comments. Just as a point of information, now retired, I have worked all my professional life for the European Commission, for the past years as director of maritime policy, which included European inland waterway policy. In this capacity I have experienced the waterways of nearly all European countries. The fact that we chose to retire on the waterways of the UK should say lots...
What a lovely couple! They complement each other perfectly.
This was a fascinating video, please do more liked it
Earl Juday yes please
I really like the hybrid power in this boat, I upgraded the electrics on a yacht 20 years ago by putting a 220 amp 24v alternator on the main engine getting a bigger inverter and doubled the size of the battery bank, to reduce dependence on the generator. Every time I have been on a narrow boat since I have thought what a platform to do a hybrid.
I do enjoy an eccentric Englishman cruising about canals on a barge. We in the U.S.A. don't have any group exactly like you, but there are a lot of people who have a camp on a barge or pontoon boat, in the Louisiana area. They camp or cruise about the swamp. The difference of course, is that England is so orderly and safe, while in Louisiana, there are alligators and hurricanes. It would be fun to see you reach out to one of these Cajun full timers and compare notes.
I thought this an extremely entertaining video, actually one of your best. A lovely couple and a very interesting boat. Well done.
Thank you Dimitrios & Carine for an insightful interview and a wonderful tour of Galene. Shes is big and she is a beauty. You both look very pleased with her and it is so lovely to hear that you had a wonderful experience with the building team. 😊
What an interesting way of "filling the cut" left by not being able to go cruising - great video.
A wonderful boat, a charming couple, and your timeless journalistic affect. Fantastic narrowboat video - and from quarantine no less!
A hybrid boat? What a great idea! :D
This was a neat change from the traditional boats you show off all the time- very cool to see the "old" and "new" married in such a unique way.
Serenity? To quote Malcom Reynolds in the TV show Firefly (and movie Serenity) of his ship, to be named Serenity.
"Ship like this, be with you 'til the day you die"
Hi David, that was an enjoyable interview with 2 nice people. What a lovely boat. Thank you.
What a very pleasant and agreeable couple.
I was impressed by their keen, intelligent thoughtfulness and planning before embarking on their build. The boat building company came across as absolutely wonderful.
I hope they enjoy their retirement.
A nicely balanced presentation between yourself, the owners Carine and Dimitios and their photos who come across as a genuinely happy and considerate 😊 couple 😊 A great concept - Thanks
Charming couple, fabulous boat and what a great idea for a vlog - well done you (and Carine and Dimitrios for, a: designing such a wonderful boat, and b: being your guinea pigs).
Brilliant idea David. What a delight to see people who have created something exactly to their requirements and eco/practical friendly.
Totally, totally amazing! Everything media should be: informative, entertaining, unbiased, non-political, no cheap jokes, serious but lighthearted, people knowing what they are talking about, talking heads actually talking without interruption! a situation (lockdown) demanding an answer for Cruising The Cut. And what an answer he has found. I am humbled.
What a great Couple👍
Thoroughly enjoyed that David, thank you so much. And what a lovely couple, big thanks to them too!
Oh, what a wonderful couple! Great thought and care went into this narrowboat. This makes me want to vacation and fall into buying a narrowboat! Thank you for the vlog!
How so very interesting the whole presentation is brilliant, it is very well produced thankyou for the fabulous content. Chris.
Excellent video. My last thought was that a happy marriage is still possible, at least when two very decent people are involved.
You are too kind...
What a lovely couple! It must have been such a pleasure doing this interview. Thanks for a great vlog!
Loved this! Thanks to this lovely couple for sharing their boat, and thanks to the intrepid journalist who brought it to us.
What an enjoyable episode of Cruising the Cut, different but shows that lockdown doesn’t stop a good creative mind. I Really enjoyed that David. They were a lovely couple with an amazing narrow boat 😘😊
Hi David - another great video. Very creative way of keeping your channel interesting whilst not being able to actually "cruise" anywhere - well done. This couple have really done a great job of making use of their space with clever bits that fold-up, fold-down and slide-out. Interesting idea to use the floor to draw out your design beforehand, but like so many things, not new. In fact, the old boat designers always used to do it that way and the only space big enough was generally in their attic or loft and it's still called "lofting" to this day - even if you do it on a computer! Cheers, Captain Alan - Oz
Nicely done. What an interesting and delightful couple and boat.
This was one of my favorite videos so far and you did a wonderful job with the interview What a lovely couple and what a magnificent boat boat they have. Thank you for bringing them to us.
What a lovely couple, and this idea of virtually exploring other boats I adore. Thank you David!!
Absolutely delightful, TY
I think this is a delightful way to go visit other boats. Your understanding and your consideration of the other owner and the boat made it very easy to travel with and enjoy the pride they feel for their made for them creation...I have loved this interview...it was very well organized and you made it shine. Thank you for sharing this with me ..job well done:-)
What a tremendous video, and a fantastic start to a series, too?
The boat was stunning, and had many clever design ideas, also, a lovely open couple sharing their home
Congratulations to all involved
Stay safe,
Davie
Lovely couple on a beautiful boat. Perfect inauguration for the new series.
Charming couple and a brilliant boat!
That was really good David, and thanks to Dimitrios and Carine too, lovely people.
Very able editing. I thoroughly enjoyed this. Thank you to the Theologitis's, if you are reading the comments, for allowing me into your boat. I loved the kitchen. The plan of the boat in the loft was amusing but can see the usefulness of it. ( It reminded me of the film chronicling the MacDonalds burger story. They chalked out a layout of the cooking area in a car park and had staff pretending to work, going from process to process.)
Thank you for the kind comments, the plan on the floor really gave us good ideas and we changed things as a result, did not regret it :-)
You really do come up with the most interesting things. A very clinical design indeed born out of total practicality . The sheer number of batteries and amount of electrickery would give me nightmares but some wonderful innovation. Look forward to the next instalment . Stay safe and keep the interesting vlogs coming.
A very good idea on your part, David - quite interesting. This kind of video showcases your obvious skills from your prior profession.
Very enjoyable.
Excellent presentation. I wish the American canal system was as extensive.
Ed Bloom me too!
I agree with you Ed....
@Ed Bloom - I love the narrow boats and UK canals and have wondered at the relative lengths of reasonably protected & navigable waterways and found the following (if you trust the source) www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/fields/386.html
United Kingdom
3,200 km (620 km used for commerce) (2009)
United States
41,009 km (19,312 km used for commerce; Saint Lawrence Seaway of 3,769 km, including the Saint Lawrence River of 3,058 km, is shared with Canada) (2012)
The year I was born (1950) my grandparents were taking their 32' racing sloop on a vacation from Cayuga Lake in New York State through the Barge Canal system to NYC and the Intracoastal Waterway down to Florida and the Bahamas. They loved the trip so much that my grandfather set about building a 28' cruising katch, launched in 1955, and they retired traveling south to the Florida Keys for winters and returning north to Cayuga Lake each summer until the 1970s when they felt their age and newer holding tank laws dictated a change to a 35' (14' beam) houseboat on which they traveled the remainder of their lives from the upper Chesapeake Bay (Chesapeake Delaware Canal area) in summer to Tavernier in the Florida Keys for winters.
If you seek a life afloat in America, it is certainly possible, though I might have second thoughts about a Narrow Boat, as some of our more open lakes and rivers can kick up a bit in windy weather.
Edit: By the way, the Rideau Canal System in Ontario Canada from Kingston to Ottawa is an especially nice route if you prefer to summer a bit farther north!
You have some nice rivers though. You have an excuse now to come here.
No extensive canals?! You can travel from Canada Maritime to Gulf of Mexico on canals rivers and inland water!🤗
What a lovely couple! I wouldn't mind tipping a few pints with them.
And, thoroughly enjoyable video. More please, David!
Great job, well done and thank you to Dimitrios and Carine👍
your broadcast experience shining forth.. much better than many of the broadcasters ! excellent questions and loads of good answers and pictures all well edited. Lovely boat with great design ideas.
Inform, educate, and entertain.. like the old days :-) Nice one... stay safe
YOUR YEARS OF TV JOURNALISM SERVES YOU PERFECTLY FOR THIS. VERY INTERESTING AND INFORMATIVE. I ADMIT I TIRE OF VIDEOS OF GOING FOR WATER AND EMPTYING TOILETS, ETC. THIS IS GREAT. DO MORE!
Or countless hours of smallish feet trudging round a quarter circle of bricks set in concrete ...
Marvellous David. Absolutely First Class !!! Looking forward to the next one. What a lovely couple.
What a beautiful boat and the idea of storage of bicycles is awesome.
Great idea for videos during Lockdown!
Lovely couple, great looking boat. Clearly a lot of thought went into the design and build.
Congratulations for an excellent collaboration with both yourself and Dimitrios & Carine thinking outside of the box resulting in a very watchable and informative video, thank you.
Lovely boat and a super couple, really enjoyed watching this episode, well done you for beating lock-down!!!!!
What a lovely couple, Very interesting to see how technology is developing on modern boats. Great video David. Looking forward to the next.
Cheers, fabulous design work!
Take care! (nice vlog)
Great interview David, really highlighted some great ideas by this couple and their builder. And what an enjoyable couple. Thanks to them for sharing their boat. Be safe everyone.
I came across your channel only 2 days ago and have been binge watching ever since!
It has become compulsive viewing for me, which is totally surprising as I never gave narrowboats a second thought.
What a wonderful couple Mr and Mrs Theologitis are, not to mention all the other friends you have shown us on previous episodes as well as your good self and great video productions.
This is one of the few positive things that for me has come out from this infernal covid crisis.
Best of health to all.
Superb vog, these people are charming and very friendly, the boat is superbly well thought out, the know-how and the seriousness of the company that built it deserves respect.
Thank you so much
What a lovely couple..
God bless them
Thank you for the kind comment.
That was absolutely fantastic....... and what a boat!!!! This is a great idea, David ,and look forward to more "tours".
This “tour” cannot possibly be topped by any other. Love all the thoughtful clever innovations.
Haha I do fear you may be right!!
What a charming couple and a lovely story.
Thank you so much for your kind comments
Very creative use of the time in lock down. Fantastic boat! When I saw the name of the episode I thought it would be something inspired by Firefly. I'm a leaf on the canal, watch me float! :-)
If they weren't from Brussels I could have sworn she was the now retired chancellor of Chalmers University of Technology.
I LOVE SEEING THE PROCESS!! THANK YOU! I LIKE THE BACK DECK WITH THE SEATING!!!
WHAT A LOVELY COUPLE.....ENJOY YOUR RETIREMENT!!!!
INDUCTION IS WONDERFUL!!!
great review, and nice and personable couple.
Enjoyed this episode David. It's wonderful how you find creative ways to keep going!
Brilliant, and what absolutely lovely people. Really enthusiastic about their boat and great sense of humour. I would like to see more vlogs like this. Great to see during all that is going on right now. Thank you.
I must commend and congratulate you on what a wonderful job you did editing this video. I was enthralled all the way through. Thank you.
Such a lovely couple and you did a good job drawing them out. Well done.
What an intelligent design. Loved all the thoughtful details.
Outstanding video. Thanks for all the work you put into that and thanks to the Theologitis family for sharing. The chalk outline of the floorplan was genius.
You are very kind!
So interesting and what a lovely couple. Hope you will all be able to get out on the cut again soon. Thanks for the video!
A lovely couple,i wish them many more years cruising.
Interesting video David thank for sharing. We also have a Pinders shell but it was a private fit out. All the best and keep safe 👍
David, Can’t begin to tell you how much I enjoy your videos and this one was outstanding. Keep up the fantastic work.
This was outstanding and very interesting. What a wonderful couple and what an excellent builder. I'm very much looking forward to seeing more of these,. One hopes cruising will be possible again in the not too distant future.
Funny how life works. A cancelled vacation turns into a new home and lifestyle. It looks like you are having a fantastic time on your beautiful narrowboat!
Isn't it... There's always a positive side to things
@@dimitriostheologitis7154 hi Dinitrios. I love your boat!!! I am from the U.S. so forgive me. But, are you living in the UK full time? Or are you living just a few months a year on the boat?also can this boat be moved to continental Europe?
VERY INTERESTING boat design! Thank you for airing this. The whole idea of hybrid boats is fascinating.
This was an absolutely thoroughly entertaining video and I thank you for that, Dimitrios and Carine were a delight to watch.
Who else was thinking Captain Picard? Another great video, charming couple. Thank you.
I love the format of this video; interesting people, interesting boat. Looking forward to more like It! Thanks!
For me as a yacht designer of sorts this is absolutely fascinating. A truck load of interesting ideas here
