Really enjoyed this! I'm Welsh, live in Wales, one question and don't speak any African language; I understand that Zulu, Xhosa, Ndebele are Nguni languages (or a language continuum) so when it says "nguni" in the description here does that mean that the comedian is speaking in, say, isiZulu, but uses words which isiXhosa speakers would understand, or can he just speak in isiZulu and isiXhosa speakers understand him, or is there some kind of 'middle' language called Nguni?
Nguni languages are similar and the people that speak them can understand each other (sometime not fully). This comedian in particular is speaking IsiXhosa but AmaZulu and Swatis would understand. Hope that clarifies it. I speak IsiXhosa by the way
@@KiloWadz thanks, I'm very grateful. This is very interesting. So Nguni is a very big and powerful language with c20 million speakers between isiXhosa, Zulu, Swati (and Ndebele). Do people say and identify as Nguni speakers? Is there some kind of levelling so that Xhosa and Zulu speakers understand one another better?
@@KiloWadz Thanks, that's very useful and interesting. So, Nguni is a big and powerful language with c20 million speakers. Do people say they are 'Nguni' speakers, do they identify as such? Do people 'level-out' or simplify their isiXhosa if they speak to a Zulu person etc.?
@@SionTJobbins no one says they are Nguni or identify as one. One would say I'm Xhosa and I speak IsiXhosa for example. Personally I speak normally to a Zulu person and I would simplify if he doesn't understand. I've found that simplifying causes more confusion for myself and the other people causing the conversation no to be natural and flowing
@@KiloWadz thanks this is very interesting. I'm very interested in the language situation in SA, both with Afrikaans and also the other languages and also in the work of people Kwasi Kwaa Prah and Neveille Alexander and CASAS in creating unified orthography across language continuums in Africa. I appreciate your answers, so much to learn. www.casas.co.za/
He is really rare. I haven't had a South African comedian make me laugh like that in a long time
I was thinking the same thing. Funny comedians are rare these days
Also, whoever was doing the subtitles is really a genius.
@AutiVEVO its Isixhosa not Zulu
Most people who are not from S.A thinks every black person in S.A speaks Zulu. I mean we have 11 official languages.
@@Tshikonelo well maybe that's all they hear about. Not really their fault but yah I wouldn't hurt to research or ask more about it
