@@drsenseihugo The Direct Drive motor didn't go into production until 1991 with the Smartdirve machines. This washer has a brushless, direct current, variable speed motor and is the only Fisher & Paykel machine to have a belt drive. It took 5 years of development and spent 6 years on the market before being replaced by the Smartdrives in '91.
There is a metal lever on the top right side of the machine. If there is an out-of-balance load, the basket has to hit the lever several times before the machine stops the spin and attempts rebalancing.
@@grnappliance7297 That's the good part, unlike these new machines you can wash slightly unbalanced items. I put a heavy coat (alone) in the GWL11 once and it banged a bit but managed to spin and spray rinse perfectly. For mildly unbalanced loads, F&P manages to fix itself in the spin
Such a great washer.
This washer has such a different sound from other machines.
It was the first of its kind, using a direct drive motor that LG uses to this day.

@@grnappliance7297 Oh wow that's cool. Thanks for the explanation. No wonder it sounded direct drive-ish, since it's brushless DC anyway.
do you know what the motor looks like? i'd like to see it
I have an interior view of the machine on my channel if you would like to see it ruclips.net/video/vleeaPiYbPQ/видео.html.
@@grnappliance7297 thanks! 👍
I wonder how this machine detects out of balance load

@@grnappliance7297 Ahh. It’s just like the old smartdrives
