  • Michelangelo's Pieta meaning and analysis (the sculpture that made him famous) | St Peter's, Rome
THIS VIDEO IS FOR ENTERTAINMENT PURPOSES ONLY
The Pietà was made somewhere between 1498 and 1500 - the dates vary a bit on the internet. It was made by Michelangelo and it was commissioned for the Cardinal Jean de Bilhères, who was a French representative in Rome - he'd have been a bit like a diplomat. It’s said that the Pieta was the sculpture that made Michelangelo’s name - he completed it before the David and before the Sistine Chapel. It's made out of Carrara marble and was made as the cardinal's funeral monument.
The scene of the Pieta shows the Virgin Mary holding the dead body of Christ after his crucifixion but before he was placed in the tomb. It is one of the key events from the life of the Virgin, known as the Seven Sorrows of Mary, which were the subject of Catholic devotional prayers. It was a theme which was pretty well known, but it was only really shown in the Northern Renaissance tradition and was unprecedented in Italian sculpture. Michelangelo's interpretation of the Pietà was really different from those made by earlier artists, because he sculpted Mary as a young, beautiful woman rather than how she was traditionally shown, as a woman of around 50 years old.
According to Giorgio Vasari, shortly after his Pietà was installed, Michelangelo overheard someone say that it was the work of another sculptor, Cristoforo Solari - and after hearing that, Michelangelo signed the sculpture, writing: "Michelangelo Buonarroti, Florentine, was making this" on the sash running across Mary's chest. The signature echoes how the ancient Greek sculptors signed their work and it was the only work he ever signed. Vasari also writes that Michelangelo later regretted his outburst of pride and swore never to sign another of his works.
Since it was created, the Pietà has seen quite a lot of damage. Four fingers on Mary's left hand were broken during a move and they were restored in 1736 by Giuseppe Lirioni. But scholars are divided about whether the restorer maybe took liberties to make her gesture more expressive than it had been originally.
And the most substantial damage happened in the 1970s - on 21 May 1972, a mentally disturbed Hungarian-born Australian called Laszlo Toth, walked into the chapel and attacked the sculpture with a geologist's hammer. He shouted "I am Jesus Christ; I have risen from the dead!" And with fifteen blows he broke Mary's arm at the elbow, knocked off a chunk of her nose, and chipped one of her eyelids. Bob Cassilly, an American sculptor and artist was one of the first people to remove Toth from the Pietà. He said "I leaped up and grabbed the guy by the beard. We both fell into the crowd of screaming Italians. It was something of a scene."
People who were watching took pieces of marble that flew off as souvenirs and later some pieces were returned - but many weren't and Mary's nose was lost, which meant it had to be reconstructed from a block cut out of her back. After the attack, the work was painstakingly restored and returned to its place in St. Peter's and it's now protected by a bulletproof acrylic glass panel.

9:15 Very Impressive stone works... and a hint why Pieta is triangular in shape, they are carved out of solid stone, and the shape gives it stability and strength. So cloth - like, seemingly effortless, it is easy to forget just how hard the marble stone is, making Michelangelo's work even more impressive.
Knowing his work is dedicated to God was a powerful motivator, he wouldn't want to do a bad job on art made for Christ !

Simply stunning. By far my favorite work of his. It almost feels as if any analysis or examination does it a disservice. It seems like a kind of vulgarity, its beauty remaining elusive. The only proper response here is quiet contemplation and awe.

I can't believe I've taken so many Art History classes talking about this sculpture and this is the first time I hear about Lazlo Toth. I feel like that's a pretty big deal considering it had to go through restoration.

So Mary's nose was never found? I think that could be the beginnings of a supernatural thriller, with Mary's nose possesing unspeakable powers, and dangerous in the wrong hands! Great video!

The Pieta depicts the slain Adonis and Venus. Adonis is a Sun God who is annually slain by a black boar aka Mars. The five wounds are found in Revelation 9.5, as the five months that can harm man. The leader is Scorpio (ruled by Mars) the remaining four months are Sagittarius thru Pisces.
Actually Adonis does not die during this period, for he is "only sleeping."
