Wandering spiders are insane, but did you know that some of their close cousins are one of the smartest spiders on Earth? Learn more here: ruclips.net/video/4KeyN8L7WZk/видео.html
That spider isn’t close to aggressive, I dare you to come to Australia and pick up a Sydney Funnel Web…. Just make sure you are really close to a hospital when you do 😂
The Sydney Male Funnelweb Spider is the most dangerous, and venomous spider in the world…..It has over 40 toxic proteins in its venom. ……and I concur with the comment above…..why don’t you come to Australia and do what you just did with that pansie spider you just held……I would lay every cent I have that you would not!
The Male Sydney Funnel web spider is the most dangerous and venomous spider in the world! It has over 40 toxic proteins in its venom. It is highly aggressive. I dare you to do what you just did with that spider with a Funnel web…… but you would not do that, would you. Stop spreading untruths.
Literally an ape with the ingenuity to create weapons that would level city sized areas in the blink of an eye frying everything in the blast radius to a crisp. The entire Earth, even our very own species is at our mercy.
"Holy crap, a human! This primate is very medically significant. I'm inside this plastic tube for my own safety, but check this guy out. He's got a hat on, which means he's a skilled hunter."
This video blew my mind, not because the spider is "medically significant', rather you can sense its intelligence as it carefully probes its surroundings. That's a remarkable creature; great video work! Keep educating us, guys.
Dude. Thank you. So much. I’m jaw dropped right now! Plenty more of these on the way for sure, I’m glad to be able to provide! And see the intelligence of these spiders is why I had doubt about their reputation. Funnel webs? They’re not the brightest so I’d believe it if they were cantankerous brutes. But wandering spiders are distantly related to wolf spiders, which are one of the more intelligent groups! As we saw, they really are fairly curious.
I absolutely adore your content . Please continue to post this sort of content. People need to be educated about these fascinating creatures and know that they should be respected and not feared . I have another channel called The Arachnoholic and it is dedicated to tarantulas and spiders . My stuff is more catered to captive arachnids , but I have made sure to subscribe to you on that account as well !!
@@MyWildBackyard That's very interesting and good to know😯 I once encountered a wolf spider who was carrying her eggsack during gardening, she searched for shelter and shadow, and ended up running under my shoe for it. Luckily, i saw her and stepped away, but she just followed me and ran under the shoe again until she found a better place to hide😂 That means, that jumping spiders and wolfs spiders are the smartest? Because a lot of people me included can confirm that jumping spiders can recognize people. I had so many of them jumping on me during work at a very special government garden, but not once was i bitten.
I love that your goal is to give some of these creatures more exposure. I want you to be able to do this for many more years to come. With that said, please don't be feel pressure from viewers to handle these creatures without adequate protection. Thanks again for the remarkable documentation and stay safe!
Honestly Steve is why I do this. Grew up always fascinated by wildlife, and to see a “grown-up” on television presenting these amazing creatures was like an “aha” moment. Sharing passion for the natural world was a thing you could do. Now, to have a platform to be able to work with some of the most vilified animals- it means the world. And I’m so glad to share how amazing and gentle these creatures can actually be. Thanks so much for this comment, it means more to me than you know.
@@MyWildBackyard it's obvious that you were inspired by him. You have passion, knowledge and a gift for this work. I know it's a lot harder than what we see in these videos. Keep up the good work!
@@interferonboy You have no idea what you are talking about! Five people have been killed in Australia due to stingray stings since 1945 and there have been twenty confirmed deaths worldwide. So, literally, you're wrong!
Mad respect for handling this spider, but it shows that those animals never out there to kill humans. Usally its accidents that make a bite happen. Love this channel from germany.
Danke! I’d say definitely something I wouldn’t encourage people to replicate, and not something I personally will repeat often. But this individual was so relaxed I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to mythbust these incredible creatures!
@@MyWildBackyard There's nothing to myth-bust- no living animal (including a human psychopath) is constantly aggressive. But you still did it for clicks and views. A more accurate and respectful way to portray the real animal would be to just observe it rather than prove that you can pick it up and handle it without getting bit. Put your hand near it and show how it has zero appetite to jump on it and bite you versus holding it in your hands. So sure, get the clicks, but don't claim that this is about biology or science.
As a Brazillian I have never seen a calm Phoneutria nigriventer. They are always in fight mode and attack anything that moves near its jumping radius. Their speed when running is incredible without mentioning that they jump from holes in the trees usually and handling them is not advised under any circumstance. I do have concerns in regards to younger viewers seeing this calm depilata and trying the same thing with a nigriventer can end rather badly.
yeah, thats why this video shows like a setup. The way they were found Big Red Flag, and how comfortable they were with them shows that these spiders most likely not from the wild but owned by someone. The way that spider went inside the container was like if it has been inside the container many times and in a calm way. Hence, this spider probably has gone many times inside the container when the owner trying to clean the tank the spider living in.
Probably because the average person is gonna freak out and make a lot of ruckus that will freak the spider out. If you remain calm and just pretend like you're a surface, the animal ain't gonna give a shit.
I live in Sydney Australia, we have the Sydney funnelweb spider that will kill you much faster than the wandering spider but we don't need to go into a jungle to find them, they're in our suburban yards.
@@brittmoore5557 nah according to Guinness book of records and few websites funnel web takes the cake but fk getting bit by either and atleast funnel webs side effects doesn't give you a hard on haha
If you ever need signatures for a petition to get you a tv show then I am all in. You are exactly the future I had hoped for after growing up watching Steve Irwin, Jeff Corwin, Ruud Kleinpaste, Jeremy Wade, etc. Your knowledge, video editing, voiceovers, collaborations, and energy to bring interest to exploring your own backyard makes me so happy, thank you
Wouldn't that be a step back though? I have seen a few youtubers over the years, who tried the TV thing and it did not work well for any of them. This right here is all him and his friends, nobody telling them what to do, what not to do, it is as good as it gets. Of course money is an issue, but i know, i prefer these videos over everything i have seen on TV, again, the only thing being the production possibilities once there is a lot of money involved, but from an educational, almost being there point of view, these guys here are the real deal i would say. He is insanely talented, isn't he? And so knowledgable, i just wrote him a really long comment praising his brilliant work, haha!
So glad you enjoyed! I’d definitely be interested in a TV show, but as one of the other replies pointed out- I love the freedom. I’d more want to work with a network in a partnership type deal so that I could level up my production and tell better stories, cause that’s the end goal. To be compared to those greats though, that is incredible. I got to meet Ruud back in elementary school, he went on tour and my fourth grade teacher actually took me to his event. I’m glad to carry on the torch that those legends left for my generation.
The amount of trust that you and that spider put in one another was incredible. Two of the deadliest creatures of Earth intimately interacting with caution, trust, and ultimately respect. Freaking amazing.
A spider with such a toxic bite as to put down any one of us with less than half a gram of venom and an ape with an appetite to eat almost anything that moves plus the ingenuity to craft weapons that would level a city sized area in the blink of an eye frying any organism within blast radius to a crisp.
It feels like a setup. The way the spiders were found and the poor acting. Spider were very comfortable with them and going inside the container meaning these spiders most likely not from the wild but actually owned by them or someone they know.
@@jb-oi9yvThat’s how Entomologists collect arthropods. You use the lid in their front (sensory organs) and place the actual container slightly behind them. They instinctively back up when touched in the front, directly into the container, which is promptly closed.
I honestly thank you a lot. A few days ago spiders horrified me....then , i found some of your videos about jumping spiders and that fear turned into curiosity. I'm not even kidding when i say i couldn't even look at a picture of a spider but now...i've been binge watching your videos over these last couple of days. Thank you , sincerely
This is a false misrepresentation of this species and very irresponsible of this RUclipsr to say that these spiders don't deserve the reputation, they kill hundreds of folk every year , now we will have people out there touching and poking these animals with little fear and dire consequences
@@jaspercain1691tf, he is not a stupid tiktoker, he actually studied about these animals and want to teach us. You're focusing in a problem that nobody here can handle. Let he do his job.
@@ollieyou184 Sadly, doomsayers will always be around, exaggerating and emphasizing the dangers and not the information. Sure, one encounter is not enough, but it still instills confidence because, he has handled many spiders. Most spiders are alike. Then there are those calling fakes.
Maybe cause it's fake anf he soled you a banana spider as a wandering spider. And even explained it himself in this video so everyone would understand. Don't even know if he did that on purpose
I was born in Brazil. São Paulo state, and spent a good chunk of my childhood in the Atlantic Rain Forest, where phoneutria "armadeiras" were quite prevalent. No other spider commands the same respect, not by a long shot. The issue with armadeiras is that you usually find them when they are right on top of you, and you inductively make quick defensive movements that trip them off. That's when bites happen. But I've met a few specimens that showed very aggressive behavior without outright provocation, and that's not a fun day in the forest. I'm glad you found this very cool individual, but that's not a phoneutria fera, which is normally the species associated with the wilder behavior, the black and orange one. Thanks for the video!
@cheshirehat93 yeah, there are stories of them attacking bike tires, horses, etc. I almost lost a big dog to one. The main problem is that they are unpredictable. 99.9% of spiders are pretty chill and easy to read, if you know them. Armadeiras are just too fast and volatile for me. And there's the golden rule in Nature: if I'm colorful, I'm bad news.
I’m interested to work with fera in the field. That one is the main “Brazilian wandering spider”, and I’m curious to see if the same protocols we used for this spider would calm one of those down too. Container first, give it time to acclimate, then test on bark or leaf first. Key is time and patience, and when we gave this depilata time to calm down, she was really a sweetheart.
@@gagegarlitz1962 No, you're food to ants. They will try and take down any size of prey to cut up and carry back to the colony. They are prolly the most aggressive insects on the planet. They don't play. They're not here to cuddle. They're not curious. They're workers and soldiers.
I put my hands inside an anthill once, not a great idea. It was fine until one of the ants bite me, I think their bites has some kind of signal, so suddenly I got bitten 100 times at once and it was horrible lol.
Most spiders are pretty chill, even when threatened they usually flee... But I know as a brazilian This spider is more of a rattle snake, they jump back do a "funny pose" threating to jump forward to bite you. But contrary to rattle snakes they make no noise and are a bit dumber what is VERY dangerous because you can threat them without even notice. They know exactly the distance to jump and bite you, and if they think you are a threat they will not hesitate to bite you at the first chance they get. But they usually give you exactly one warning, so I guess even when you tried to catch her, you could instantly notice and let her be. The main problem of these spiders is when they are unnoticed OR you want to fight them. They are normally killed when they enter homes because catching them is very difficult. They are INDEED the most "aggressive" spiders, but that does not mean they are hunting human beings for dinner (well, that is normally a thing parents tell kids so they can be aware to run away)... They just give much less warnings than any other spider.
I can attest to the Sydney funnel web having a similar attitude. Unlike other large spiders such as our huntsman spiders, the funnel web will stand it's ground and rise up on its rear legs ready to strike. Unlike snakes they are silent and you can get bitten without warning as you often don't see them.
I’m pretty sure the Sydney funnel web spider is the most dangerous spider in the world when it comes to envenomation, but these guys are also bad. Major props and man that must’ve been gut wrenching to have that spider across your hand like that!
The mention of it causing priapism has led the this spider now being the viagra spider in my head, though with the slightly worse side effect of death. Honestly though, I’ve spent time in Ecuador, Brasil, Colombia, and Perú, and if I were faced with any arachnid this size whilst there I’d probably have died from the heart attack long before envenomation became an issue. Thankfully, I didn’t end up meeting one of these. Even watching this was hard for me as they make my skin crawl, but I like to learn so I have to deal with them on screen. Just not in person.
If there’s one thing I’ve learned dealing with admittedly less dangerous creatures (though still medically significant), is you have to commit. Once you pick them up you’ve gotta let me choose when they’re done. When you lose your nerve and try to get them off you that’s when you get bite.
I literally had the worst anxiety while you were holding her because I thought she was going to bite you. I can’t even believe you had balls of steel like that I could never, but I have much newfound respect for these potentially deadly spiders.
I will say this- I never free handle anything this toxic unless I am above 95% certain I won’t be bitten. We’ve got protocols to test spider temperament, and I’m even more thorough with that after my red widow bite back in march. And that’s the whole thing- I don’t ask that anyone attempts what I do, but to hear you’ve gained respect for these animals means I’ve done what I set out to do.
@@MyWildBackyardI understand and appreciate your experience and expertise but letting that spider crawl on you without 100% certainty of not being bitten is foolish. I suggest keeping dangerous creatures on logs. The fact you let it crawl on you simply engendered feelings of anxiety without adding much value.
@@MyWildBackyard Do you ever have antivenom on hand when handling things like this? If not, would you have been able to make it to a hospital in the event it bit you?
Where Brave Wilderness dropped the torch; Spencer picked it up and carries it onward with pride. You are officially the greatest wildlife youtube channel now.
You do not realize how much this means to read. Those are powerful words you said right there, and I do not take them lightly. I will carry this torch with honor, and I know the responsibility that comes with it.
It's so fascinating how this formidable animal curiously probes and explores the environment it found itself in. It's equally fascinating how you managed to make it feel like it's in no danger at all, despite being a giant compared to it. Wow, what a video!
Mate. This was bloody impressive. Going and finding the species in the field (in a different country!), giving the audience good and interesting info, then handling the animal while you continue to narrate the intetaction. Top notch stuff. Mad respect and I love your care and passion for the natural world. You treat the animals with such reverence and wonder. Really damn good stuff. Much good will from down under in Sydney!
It's informative videos like yours that have dramatically eased my lifelong arachnophobia and I thank you. I'll never LOVE spiders but I can now appreciate their necessity and how fascinating they are.
What the hell? Even Coyote Peterson with his experience about getting bitten by venomous insects around the world, doesn't have the balls handling a freaking Brazilian Wandering Spider, like you did! Amazing. You're pushing yourself to the next level. Thank you for providing such amazing experience and new insights about this deadly beauty. And also, stay safe.
I will definitely stay safe 🫡 This one was an experience I will never forget. Dangerous, sure, but in my opinion, necessary to show the true nature of these spiders. So much misinformation out there, i think sending a powerful message about these animals is part of my mission here on this platform. Thanks for being a part of it!
I also can't help but compare how they dress. Coyote dresses like he's going on safari with the cowboy hat, boots, field watch, etc. Spencer is dressed for going to the mall, lol! I'd feel so vulnerable in the jungle.
I feel like we are witnessing something very special that is evolving with this channel. All of the seeds of success are present already. I can only see growth in the future of this channel. And it's damn exciting to watch it happening before my eyes!
Your fascination with wildlife, insects, and spiders definitely rubs off on all your viewers and especially me! Your braveness, content, and determination has made me want to educate people about spiders as well, and it definitely inspires me a lot. Thank you for being an amazing creator and one of the best ones out there!
That really means a lot. I do my best! Just grateful for all the support, and you guys truly deserve the best. You push me to push myself so that I can deliver videos that you’ll truly enjoy.
I met many individuals of Phoenutria (probably depilata) in Guatemala. As a matter of fact, they were numerous residents of the thatch roofs of our huts in which we slept, since we had light bulbs that attracted their prey at night. Without exception, EVERY. SINGLE. ONE. I encountered apparently had a ginormous 24/7 hate-on for the world, and wouldn't hesitate for a second to display legs (purple underneath rather than orange) and fangs if you even walked near them. No way in hell I would handle one, though I did handle Tlitocatl sabulosus and an unidentified Centuroides species.
I just want you to know that I for one am extremely grateful for your channel and the work you do! You are respectful and compationate with the animals you handle, but most importantly, you educate and in doing so, you elevate fear and in its place install a deep respect and awe for wildlife in the people who watch your channel! I appreciate you and your work more than I could express! ❤
You have balls of steel brother! Thanks to you, I was able to confidentiality relocate a dark fishing spider from my barn to a much more subtle location with egg sack in tow. I wasn't even nervous about it because I mimicked your collection technique perfectly. Thank you Spencer! You gave me the courage to save instead of brutally kill!
Proud of you my man! This is the kind of comment I love reading, because it means a lot to see how people are seeing the world differently thanks to my work. Sure these spiders are creepy, but they have a place. Even if that place is not in your barn or house.
I have been preaching about the wonderful world of our backyards and parks for decades! You have a great channel, and I enjoy watching you do what you do. It reminds me of when I would go out and catch the great wildlife living under foliage with my kid when she was little. Great channel and God bless you and your family! Keep it up brother and much love from San Antonio Texas!
You dont have idea of how lucky you are to find an phoneutria that was calm like this one, for real! I live in Brazil and have seen an phoneutria only 1 time in my life, it was a huge female and it was at my place at the time so i have to move it away from there, i tried to do the good old simple pot and paper thing and i have some experience with a lot of another species of spiders that i had moved before but the wandering instantly became so fucking agressive that it even fucking have spelled some sounds, it was amazing and terrifying that i cant put it on words but after some fight i was able to put it on the pot and release it away from there. Wish i could coment some photos in this youtube section, even in the pot she was standing in the defensive position that they were so famous known at.
I have been waiting to see this video for a very long time, and you did not disappoint man, you absolutely nailed it. The Brazilian wandering spider is an incredible animal and a top tier subject for your channel, and I’m impressed as always by how well you were able to execute this video and capture so much of the adventure and what it meant to you. You did a great job of integrating your story and showing your growth as it progresses, I’m seriously honored to have been a part of it and to have found these unbelievable animals together. You are doing a fantastic job advocating for these animals and breaking through the unnecessary fearmongering that surrounds them, I look forward to joining you in that endeavor. Great work man.
Glad to have had you with! Seriously having both you guys there helped make all the Ecuador adventures truly something special. Can’t wait for our next international trip.
I have a very great fear of spiders. Goes back to when I was 4 years of age. We had an out house, and there were huge spiders around. Watching you scared me immensely, I did watch till the end. You are one brave man.
Man, I’m so jealous. Wandering spiders are such amazing creatures and I’d love to get up close and personal with one. And I’m very glad that, between you and Jack, there’s some more grounded and educational videos about medically significant spiders on RUclips now.
Dude we gotta go for funnel webs. The people are asking for it, and (of course I don’t plan on free handling) I gotta see them for myself to see what their temperament truly is. I know you’ve got quite a few videos on them as well, but I HAVE to see one.
@@MyWildBackyardWhat you really gotta find if/when you make it down here is Hadronyche formidabilis. Basically a Sydney funnel-web, but arboreal and over twice the size.
She's beautiful, calm. I thought the same thing about my ex. Put them in an environment where they can just walk all over you, but the moment they don't get their way? Divorce, hissing, biting, expensive attorney bills. Considered dangerous to one's finances.
New sub, that was incredible to watch and not because you picked up a dangerous spider. But because you made nature exciting to watch. You should be proud mate you are going to be the guy that gets to show future generations how amazing the world really is.❤

Ooh this one's a banger. I never thought I'd see anyone free handle a Brazilian wandering spider. I mean, you got bit by the red widow, but this stuff is another level. I can't imagine what it would be like telling people that you've handled the deadliest spider in the world. My full respect for you 😁
Thanks so much man! I didn’t even post this in the discord cause I wanted it to be a surprise. Literally an unreal experience. Makes me wonder about the truth about funnel webs and sand spiders! @@kycon1234 Every one of those I've seen on video tries to kill anything that comes near it whether it be prey or tongs or sticks. But who knows if I'm remember right. As a scuba diver I fume at certain shark videos, especially shark bite videos. Those assholes lured in the sharks, which I'm ok with to a point. But they lure them in and get them riled up bc they are dumping lots of chum in the water when they don't really need to do that. Then the shark is in a eating mood and of course it's gonna do aggressive shit. They put it in that mode. I know people who have been circled by an enormous Fking tiger shark. All they had to do is keep an eye on it. I've never encountered one of the aggressive species, but every shark I've seen that was awake wanted nothing to do with me and was swimming away. I have seen a nurse shark and a giant moray eel sharing a sleeping spot. I have picture proof. I was being a bit unsafe as my dive buddy was a bit away from me. Even at 30 ft, in perfect water like it is in Cozumel, probably should stay in arms reach of your buddy. I wasn't as close as the picture seems to indicate. But this guy did eventually get tired of me and my bubbles and did some really wide mouth threat displays, so I peaced out before I could get a nice open mouth shot. I didn't want to have to surface with this giant on my arm. If I'm remembering correctly, it's head was at least as big as mine. Check this out. i.imgur.com/XxpA8Sk.jpg

@@SHOTD34DCA idk where you get the very aggressive from but it's true that they have mean venom that actually only has that bad of an affect against humans and other primates (Like cat's being bitten are usually fine) because they inject so much at once. "Aggression" wise they are supposed to be more chill than Wandering spiders but as you have seen when handled correctly they can be calm as well:) (besides this one being a more calm species overall) That being said I've never seen anyone HANDLE a Sydney Funnel web maybe it's just really not something you should be doing 👻
Bro, I was 19 working at a Hi-Lo supermarket in Bristol, Rhode Island. I worked in the produce department and was unpacking a box of bananas when I almost grabbed a huge spider. Someone killed it with a shovel and dumped it. Literally, 15 years later, I saw it on a documentary and realized this was the spider in the box. I came 1 foot away from getting bitten by this thing while living in a state where nothing venomous lives, I would have been dead.
Mad respect for handling that amazing spider! You are amazing and I have learn so many things by your channel. I have always loved spiders and I have always felt wierd to be the "bug boy" but you have made me feel normal and I have contiuned exploring different kinds of species. Thank you!
I’m glad to help! Keep studying bugs, and make sure to own your “weird”. Passion is an awesome thing, and the more you follow it, the more doors you’ll open for yourself.
No need to thank us ... THANK you! You are a huge reason why I have found my passion for spiders and added even more to my love of the outdoors! Your natural excitement like I get out there makes it all worth it! 🥰❤️ I have learned a lot from your videos alone, we appreciate you!
The Phoneutria fera is one of my all time favourite spiders, I did get to keep one for a while but never tried to hold her (as I have with most of tarantulas or even my C salei (tiger wandering spider)) as anytime I fed her she would instantly throw up a threat posture - such an amazing threat display too, with her red chelicerae and stipes on the legs.
Glad to be able to! It’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but I can’t thank you enough for helping make these videos possible. Literally, each and every one of you guys is why these videos are able to happen and I’m just floored.
Don't forget about the Syndey Funnel Web. They are also one of the most venomous spiders, and said to be super aggressive, most bites happen because they are common in suburban areas and when people are gardening, they get bitten.
yep i grew up with fishing them out of the pool before swimming, and casually walking between my bare feet a few times. They can act dead for a while in the pool also. They're terrifying creatures.
When you said that you were going to freehandle that, I was like “nope,” but for some reason, I never did click off of the video, and I’m so glad I watched it to the end. I experienced this, and it felt so surreal. I don’t know if it’s just something about you, but it made me feel so fulfilled to watch something that I would never want to.
Wow! Amazing video! I can see how much that moment you held it meant to you, it’s a holy grail of spiders. Your channel is one of my favorites and as a fan and a fellow NC resident I’ve enjoyed watching it grow while learning quite a bit about things right in my backyard. Very cool to see you going global and getting to do adventures like this one here. Can’t wait to see what’s next!
You and Jack are easily my favorites! Thank you soooo much for all you do for the amazing little creatures that are getting more and more respect everyday because of work like yours! ❤
I've never thought about it like that but the "alien abduction" analogy was perfect. I will always think about it that way from this point forward when I move a bug out of my house. I had a MASSIVE snail in my car port a few days ago (it is rainy season in Thailand so a bunch of cool critters are coming out) and my wife wanted me to move it so she didn't run over it, so I picked it up by the shell and moved it out of the way. Now that I think about it, he probably felt like he was picked up by a ufo and carried to another place. love thinking about it that way.
IM SO JEALOUS I WANNA GO TO THAILAND SO BAD! But yes. It was definitely a commenter on this channel who initially made that comparison, but I loved it and I’ve used it ever since.
Kudos to you for moving the snail to a safe place. I can only imagine him trying to convince the other snails about his "UFO encounter". "Dude, I swear to God, this gigantic thing just reached out and picked me up! It started moving and then, it put me down here! Then it completely disappeared. Don't look at me like that, it really *did* happen!" 😆
First and foremost you have nerves of steel for handling such a dangerous spider. Secondly that Brazilian Wandering Spider was beautiful to watch you handle but I definitely could never handle something like that. Thank you for sharing such a spectacular specimen with us
This was amazing Spencer! Yeah I remember wandering the Amazon at night and being a bit freaked out. I have only had one threat pose with a wandering spiders on a tent we were taking down. I do see you got the shaky hands I had when I held a bullet ant.
This video was absolutely incredible! I never thought I’d see you handle a phoneutria and we literally handled three different widow spiders together, that’s how crazy this is!! Everything from the edits to the b roll shots to the music was incredible, genuinely hoping for the best performance for this video. Amazing!!!
What sort of emergency preparedness was done _if_ the wandering spider did bite you? You sure have an awesome way of filming and portraying the creatures you come upon!
I could not breathe watching you hold her. But I'm so excited that you showed how amazing and misunderstood these beautiful creatures are. ❤ I love her.
Hey man wow! It's going to be hard to top a find/ interaction like this! Handled that perfectly, and I was losing it the whole time. Mad respect for the respect you have for these animals. Hope you can find many other exotic species in Ecuador, I know wed all love to see them.
Fortunately this particular species of Phoneutria is less serious than the others. P. fera and P. nigriventer could be death sentences, but depilata hasn’t recorded any human deaths yet.
This was one of those ones where we were only gonna attempt handling if we were certain a bite wasn’t gonna happen, so I was on the phone with Jack asking how to make sure it was safe. He had the same species walk on his face, and confirmed my suspicions that they act largely like wolf spiders.
Sadly, there are those calling it fake and staged, and that he is an idiot for risking his life potentially. Always the downers. They see only the downsides. They are 100% cynics.
I’ve always been both fascinated and terrified of spiders. When I was younger I used to go into screaming fits over the sight of one. But after doing more research and watching videos like this, I’ve really grown to love them. They are amazing to watch. The way they move still gives me light chills, but it’s also so interesting. I really wonder what’s going on in their heads when I watch them.
You're nuts my man! I hope your trust in these wild, and dangerous animals/insects doesn't cost you your life or permanent injury someday. IMO, it's just not worth the risk.
Curious, if you were to get bit while you were free handling the brazilian wandering spider, would you be able to get the medical attention quick enough? like do you guys ever bring antidotes or would you be able to get to a hospital quick enough? or would you just be screwed?
We would be able to get to the hospital quick enough. That, plus this particular species is not known to cause severe issues in humans for the most part. Same toxicity but lower propensity to give full “wet” bites unless you’re like squishing it.
I'm so thankful by the grace of God that I got over my incredible fear of spiders. I now have 12 regal jumping spiders, and getting to learn and observe them has truly been rewarding in a way that I can't describe. These little creatures can love and trust. It is also opening up doors to me towards other insects that I don't care for but still have learned a healthy respect. Mosquitoes will never attain that level, however. Thank you for the great content. I was always one who would smash first and ask questions later. That was the wrong way to do it.
Nice video. In my experience most "dangerous" animals are only so if they feel triggered by humans. Having run into elephants, gorillas, big cats, sharks etc, I can tell most really don't care about human presence if you remain calm and treat them respectfully. From what I have seen, most accidents happen when people provoke these animals, including some RUclipsrs and TV presenters. I have seen this spider up close but I didn't dare handling it as I find spiders quite hard to predict. Snakes on the contrary are usually quite predictable. I have removed Malayan Kraits from my bedroom in Thailand several times and never experienced any aggression. But I will have to admit they are very easy going despite or perhaps because of their incredible venom. So far the only animals that really scared me into staying well out of their way have been hippos, polar bears, and large crocodiles.
I was thinking the same thing. It almost moved as if it knew it was to be feared. It wasnt scared. The methodical movement is amazing. You really can tell it’s intelligence
Fascinating, I thought these spiders will bite anyone who comes near them. Your channel and similar ones like Jack's world of wildlife and Bugs and biology have educated me a lot about the truth surrounding unfairly demonized animals
Hey you know two of my good friends! Course all of us wildlife nerds end up knowing each other eventually, I talk to both of them on a weekly, sometimes even daily basis!
I work in a retail store in germany and theres been a little rumour going around that these guys sometimes accidentally get shipped with banana shipments (very unlikely, tho there are occasionally spiders in those boxes) so its fun to actually see it in its enviroment and just realize how HUGE they actually are. Very very cool video
I worked the bananas. The worst is when they are left overnight under a plastic tarp. They become warm meaning anything has become active inside and angry. Luckily I've only encountered two and a few eggsacks, one dead and one running on the ground. I don't think either were wandering spiders thankfully.
@@jordantoft3164 Interestingly enough, the antidote for the Sydney funnel Web spider is very cheap to produce, every doctor in Sydney and Environment has it. It's the reason why basically nobody dies anymore due to this spider. For a very long time now. Antidotes can cost well over 200000$, so that says a lot. I still prefer Tarantulas though, nothing beats the fluffyness and slow funny movements xD
Thank you for the incredibly important job you are doing explaining how magnificent and beautiful spiders and other « weird » or « frightening » looking arthropods are in reality, and showing how awesome, ingenious and non-agressive they are, contrary to those wild spread biases they are unfortunately victims of. Cheers and continue the great work 😅
@@MyWildBackyard How do you feel about those still calling this fake, staged, claiming it is a docile spider in captivity, devenomed, that this is just one encounter and that most encounters would be different and that most wandering spiders are not this docile, some of those people calling you an idiot for risking your life potentially(you’re at least taking a risk, high stakes, that’s for sure), and that you are responsible for people who might copycat you(although I guess you could say anyone would blame Steve Irwin, Coyote Peterson, Nigel Marven, or you, for people choosing to copycat you, with that logic) and who might end up dead because of it? Is it a stance you feel the need to take to refute them? Why do you think it’s the case that people are trying to shame you for doing what makes you happy, educating folks on misconceptions on spiders? Personally, I don’t think you are responsible for anyone copycating you, because you tell people not to do it, time and time again, yet some people will never let you win that argument. They will always tell you that it is your fault, and that you are not responsible, honest or genuine. I see a lot of people in this comments section trying to debunk you, or calling you out, but I don’t think they are very bright people. The rest are cynics(my guess is that some are sociopathic as well as cynical) because they have a huuge depressive, aggressive and spiteful, even arrogant, outlook on what you do, that only idiots do what you do, and that you’ll only end up like Steve Irwin, and that we will be sad if you die(of course we’d be), but almost like it’s inevitable because Steve died, almost like they’re hoping for it, just to be right, because they respect only the danger of wildlife, not the beauty and intricacy of it. Like, what knowledge would we lose if people like you, Steve Irwin or Coyote Peterson didn’t take risks to teach us upclose about that these creatures are not monsters and not handling them? Some pointed out that you can find this out without handling them and risking one’s life. Do you agree with that? Do you think some of them have good points or are their reasoning flawed and bigoted at the end of the day? I hope this wasn’t too much. I just wanted to hear(or read in this case) your take on some haters’ views on you. Don’t let the hate bring you down. Keep going strong and let the teaching go on my friend. Thank you for your work. It helps a lot. Btw, my favorite spider these days is the Greenbottle Blue Tarantula. 😉 I used to be arachnophobic. Haven’t handled any others than the tiniest ones(I found a tiny daddy longlegs in my food locker today for some reason. It looked like dust moving at first lol. Must’ve come in via the air vent. I let it out. Then it went on the floor. No idea where it went 😂). Spiders larger than a coin I’m still a bit skittish to handle for fear of them biting defensively(understandably), so I don’t touch them. 😆 But needless to say, I typically leave spiders be these days and admire them from a distance and I can look at them fairly close. When I was little I and a couple of friends tried to kill a wolf spider I think it was with a rock, but the angle of the stone stairs it was resting on made sure it survived and wasn’t hit. But it did run haha(understandable, I’d run too if a bunch of monstrous giant kids tried to kill me because I freaked them out). That would never happen today. Today I am in my thirties, so I have a respect for spiders and all animal life. Anyhow, again, thank you and cheers. Much love and good fortune to you from Sweden. 🇸🇪
Now that you've free handled a wandering spider, does that mean at some point you will go to Australia and free handle a Funnel Web spider? They are notoriously aggressive (the males) it would be interesting to see if you tame one of them like you did the wandering spider.
I will definitely work with them. We’ll have to see on the day if the individual looks handleable, though I actually expect not. They’re nowhere near as smart as wandering spiders, and since they’re subterranean, just being in the light will stress them out immensely. Combine that with poor vision and then being touched by a larger animal, I would expect they would bite defensively. We shall see though.
@@MyWildBackyard Yeah the Sydney funnel web is going to be a much more difficult one to actually free handle without them potentially being aggravated. If irritated they put one hell of an aggression stance.. and they seem to move much more quickly in general. Their venom has been shown to be the quickest to kill, with as little as 15 minutes for a child. Fortunately, there is a solid antivenom so as long as you have quick access to that then it'd be potentially worth trying.

Yeah, it is very reminiscent of hands reaching out and feeling the world. It adds a strange anthropomorphic vibe.
Dude. Thank you.

Thanks for the video!
great insight
Good info. Thanks for taking the time.
Very nice information, maybe he will find one of those as well.
Funny how ants still bite your hands when you act as a surface for them to walk on while spiders don't.
Spiders: "If you're chill, we chill."
Ants: "YoU cAn'T dEfEaT aLl Of Us! YiElD tO tHe QuEeN's FiNeSt! AtTaCk!"

@@Softlol Wow, I'm glad I know it's not a great idea now that I heard your experience. I would never have thought!
Well if you believe that they are the most dangerous and aggressive, than holding a Male Sydney funnel web should be to much of an issue

Im so glad i found this channel. Narrating while holding a feared creature... amazing.
What a relaxed individual she was!! Honestly seemed more curious than aggressive.
This made me feel good.

Yoooo bugsandbiology!! Feels so cool to see you here.
And I agree, this video was amazing

Dude we gotta go for funnel webs. The people are asking for it, and (of course I don’t plan on free handling) I gotta see them for myself to see what their temperament truly is. I know you’ve got quite a few videos on them as well, but I HAVE to see one.

You should go looking for the biggest spider on earth. I’m pretty sure it grow to the size of the average dinner plate
Ive been able to handle lots of different spiders now myself thanks to you bro! Mywildbackyard

Don't forget about the Syndey Funnel Web. They are also one of the most venomous spiders, and said to be super aggressive, most bites happen because they are common in suburban areas and when people are gardening, they get bitten.
Yep, I wouldn’t try handling one of those babies unless you have a death wish or are completely insane.
Also apparently way more dangerous for humans.
yep i grew up with fishing them out of the pool before swimming, and casually walking between my bare feet a few times. They can act dead for a while in the pool also. They're terrifying creatures.
When you said that you were going to freehandle that, I was like “nope,” but for some reason, I never did click off of the video, and I’m so glad I watched it to the end.

Dude! What was the plan in the unfortunate event of a bite?? Awesome content as always, glad to see the subscriber count on the rise 👍
Why haven't you got millions of subscribers? This channel is awesome!

@@MyWildBackyard Appreciate that, It's always so nerve watching you handle these spiders after i saw that red widow bite you.
You got some big balls bro 💯
This beautiful animal has me mesmerized by its movements, simply an incredible video, thank you so much and keep doing what you do!!

Glad to do it! This one was such a powerful experience, being able to share it and the truth about these awesome spiders means the world.
But needless to say, I typically leave spiders be these days and admire them from a distance and I can look at them fairly close.
