Awww back when Tanner had short hair! People who leave the church being really involved: I was a temple worker in Provo for 3 years, volunteering every Saturday for 6 hours. The day my ex-spouse and I decided to stop going to church, we called our bishop to let him know in advance because we each had TWO callings and wanted to give him a chance to get someone else to cover so he wouldn’t be stressed. And although the mission was an experience that has helped me be successful (I’m a manager in a large corporation, and I draw on my church experience regularly in that job because the church is a large corporation) I still have nightmares about going on another mission.
Love your videos! Been binge watching them all afternoon. As someone that has been brought up in the lds church since birth, also having a father that has either been a bishop or a stake president for the entirety of my life,it is great to know others feel this way. It's also nice to see a English Ex Mormon member.Even though I haven't been brought up in the Mormon land of Utah, the church finds a way to enforces that we "be friends with those that are like minded"
You are wrong!!! I just got my head out of a hat with my iRock and it says to follow Greg and not you!!!!!! (Loved your enthusiasm!!!) BTW--never read a lick of "anti" lit in my life--the essays brought me out of the church!!! Thank the universe for the essays!!! Freedom for me!!! (I was in the bishopric when this all happened--after a 3 year stint as a high councilman--no cafeteria mormon here!!)
You do know the church has its own library. You can get all the knowledge you need there. They even have their own University. Why would you ever need a public library card. 😉
I had to go through a process to have “permission” to attend a different ward at one point. Because I felt so alone in the “assigned” ward. It was stupid.
I have found that before I read anything by Greg Trimble, I need to remove all sharp objects from reach so I don't instinctively stab my eyes out. May also help to place an over mitt on your hand to ease the pain from when your palm hits your face... many, many times over the course of any article he spawns.
This past summer we went boating with our family almost every Sunday.....the family.....together.....happy......unstressed..... We found a lot of things to do on Sunday that don't involve callings and church.
I love these two. I listened intently to their interview on Mormon Stories. They are fun. I loved the poem that put everything into one medium (by Tanner). And I loved the Brigham Young discussion. My first issue (and by far the largest issue) is the Book of Abraham and right behind that is the priesthood ban. In studying the everything around the priesthood ban that is when I discovered all the information on Brigham Young. I read them all and they are awful. And in my own personal search I did not seek out anything termed "anti-Mormon" documents. I simply went to the source documents wherever possible. It was only years later that I came across the Tanners, Mormonstories, etc. I am interested in people's core stories about how they lost their faith in Mormonism.
These types of responses reminds me of the mental slavery that believers willingly embrace because they refuse to actually research church history which is so accurately sourced online. If it looks like a cult, it probably is.
I was actually terrified to do the research. I had to peek just a little at a time, and then run to apologetic sites for comfort and reassurance. I really was afraid of punishment for betraying what they said was the Holy Ghost. Many years of brainwashing doesn't go away all at once. But finally I could see the truth, and the apologetic sites didn't make sense anymore. I've been out for a year and a half, and I've learned way too much to ever think about going back. Many people are now doing what I did, and their loyalty will wear down little by little as they gradually absorb the facts and the apologists can't spin it for them anymore.
I'm actually one of those people that left the church because it was "too hard". Sort of. I first realized the church wasn't true as a kid (10-15) when I started looking up things against the church. The reason I did this was because if it wasn't true, I wouldn't have to do the things that were "too hard". (For example: I wouldn't have to pay 10% of my hard earned few dollars, and I wouldn't have to read the scriptures on Sunday instead of my fantasy novel) So it can be a valid reason for people to leave the church. But, in my own experience, it's more of a naive kid's reason why. Still a good a reason though. :)
The kind of thinking in this article is VERY harmful for everyone involved. No compassion, blatant avoidance of information, blaming of victims, damaging mind control thought patterns, it's got it all!
The irony that they say it's your own fault if you're offended yet are offended at so many things. Immodest clothing and behavior, piercings, tattoos, most music and movies, working on Sundays, profanity..... I could go on and on...
Ended up here by accident searching for Greg Trimble. It's hard to take you seriously when you don't take yourselves seriously. Good luck with the thing you got going on here. I don't know you but you know you're always welcome.
Dammmmnnn! Tanner I felt the spirit at the end when you told him "fuck you" and proceeded to very eloquently tell him off. ;) Seriously though. Thanks for this (:
I wasn't enjoying church and felt I was seeking out anti-church stuff to justify leaving. Then I realized whatever reasons I had for finding out didn't change how messed up it is.
An observation on the use of ellipses: those at the tail end of the boomer generation who got FB/social media after their college age children - those are the people who overuse ellipses ad nauseum.
I like to comment on Gregs facebook posts and see all of the mormons freak out and use ad hominem attacks. They usually just say that im having a bad day lol
You should do a reading on Michael Goodman's LDS Perspectives podcast interview, "What is LDS Doctrine? ". It screwed me up when I was still TBM, and mindscrewed every Mormon I quoted it to.
I just listened to that and can I say it makes about as much sense as anything else in the church. Which is to say, it makes no sense at all. The mental gymnastics are incredible.
Good vid, I was to the understanding that more upstanding law abiding LDS leave because of polygamy, and excluded blacks. Doctrine? I was told that these weren't prophecy because it wasn't signed, or they were only opinions, or they weren't perfect. When Joseph came to restore the church I think he intended on removing ALL confusion, yet people are still confuse, and thank God they're searching.
The actual top 5 reason not to leave the church: 1.- the likelyhood of making friends anywhere else is zero 2.- you would rather join a marriage as the 15 wife than join the workforce and earn a paycheck 3.- it seems much easier to pray and ask god than conduct an experiment using a control and variable 4.- you have an unexplainable desire to ask non-related children to sit on your lap while telling them about a supernatural figure that has undying love for them so long as their parents aren't gay 5.- a senile man who can't remember his name has begged you not to leave
We ran into the problem of ward boundaries when I was growing up. Our ward was enormously toxic and unhealthy. I ended up going to the other one that met in the chapel, which was far, far better, and had all the good people in town (literally). I ignored policy. My parents and I also spent time in the Spanish speaking branch two towns over for their stake mission. When it was over, they wanted us to go back to that toxic ward, but we all refused. That branch (all Hispanic converts) was literally the best ward/branch any of us had seen. Far less Mormon brainwashing and idiocy, just good people trying their best (despite being Mormon). I still miss them. Their parties were AWESOME!! Yeah their rules are atrocious at times. Especially when there are literally BAD people in the ward you're forced to attend.
Filming, i have said many times the members in the all hispanic ward by me outside chicago were the most spiritual - the most loving - and inclusive - they had a spiritual presence that the delightsome members didn't seem to have.
When I heard you read that "you shouldn't leave the church because it's hard" I agreed that this is a valid reason not to leave the church. It is really hard to leave the church, and I know people (myself included) who have stayed long after realizing it wasn't true because leaving was so hard. It's okay if someone isn't ready to take that step. But then I realized that he meant that you shouldn't leave because STAYING is hard. That's a whole different can of worms. And also a totally legit reason to leave.
Not only does this guy not have any decent arguments, he's just a terrible writer. I died inside when he wrote "if something is strange, is it really?" Yes. The answer is yes. If it's strange, then it's strange. That be how words do.
I would personally say the number 1 reason people leave is for digging deep into church history, not for understanding the doctrine. (The latter, in my mind, implies that one finds the church to be in contrast with mainstream Christianity according to doctrines of the trinity, salvation by faith, etc.; these would most likely leave the church and become a mainstream Christian. I find that the majority of Mormons leave the church because of church history (polygyny & polyandry, racism toward blacks, sexism, etc.). These people are typically burnt out by religion and institutions in general and become agnostic, atheist, or spiritualist).
Daric, this tracks with my anecdotal experience -- i started questioning doctrine - i realized lds was a pay to play religious experience and are not saved by grace in the knowledge of the resurrection, as they claim -- they are jewish mysticism, still under the mosaic law --- that being said i have maintained my faith in basic Christian tenets but will never prescribe to organized religion again - am probably more aligned with buddhism than christianity at this point. looking around at most christian affiliations it's just really a ton of narcissism and not the hill I'M dying on.
Where Is My McDonald's? Don't watch then. People have valid, serious reasons for this and most did _not_ want to discover these inconvenient truths. So if you're not willing to truly investigate the why, don't watch ex Mormon videos!!!
50,000. That's right, I would have easily caught 50,000 trout during my 50 wasted years of Sundays sitting with a group of smiling, petrified, zombies instead of being waist deep in a clear mountain stream, with a great cigar.
23:28 god comes down to earth: "Mormonism is not true!" Mormons: This is a test of our faith! It's proof that mormonism is true because god himself said it isn't! I swear this is how they would react
The Church would have much better attendance very quickly if they would allow people to choose which ward works best for them. Letting people choose their parish works very well for the Catholic church.
Sara K this is a corporation with strict guidelines, they won't be all willy-nilly with their record keeping. They are basically keeping a close eye on their assets and keep them exactly where they want them to control them. If people could bounce around they wouldn't be able to keep teachers, janitors and clerks where they want them. It's a closed system.
@@cherylstokes636 I never thought about it this way. The Catholic church doesn't demand tithing. Neither do most Protestant churches, but the ones that do don't demand that you attend at a particular parish.
Hahaha! Never watched a video from you guys before, but I love it!! I feel like we're best friends already! Take my subscribe and keep up the great work!
Reason number 594,848 to leave the church... Brigham Young said very tall quaker looking people lived on the moon, I have the JOD in my possession and he really did say that: “Who can tell us of the inhabitants of this little planet that shines of an evening, called the moon?... When you inquire about the inhabitants of that sphere you find that the most learned are as ignorant in regard to them as the ignorant of their fellows. So it is in regard to the inhabitants of the sun. Do you think it is inhabited? I rather think it is. Do you think there is any life there? No question of it; it was not made in vain.” - Prophet Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses, v. 13, p. 271 My dad had big library of LDS books because he read non-stop, believer and apologist. But why would you want to stay in the church after you've read that? The JOD is madness.
My young friends, I have learned, especially from members who were doubters from the beginning, until you have gained a witness of the truth of the gospel by the spirit of truth, any seeming reasoning against the church can affect you. But once you receive your testimony because the Spirit of God has revealed it to you, and you have gained an ongoing relationship with the Savior through that Spirit, then the words of Abraham Lincoln kick in. 'I never allow what I don't know to get in the way of what I do know'.
Kristofer Hemingway this is nonsense and dismisses the incredibly important, genuine reasons why people leave. You ignore their stories and experiences, the tremendous pain they've felt _from the church_ , it's policies, and how people around them interpret them. Fact is, most ex-Mormons were devout, active members who _thought they did_ have testimonies. But people in every religion has spiritual experiences, not just Mormonism. And people have them outside of religion, too. One example is LGBT members. Of which, suicide is a leading cause of death currently for Utah youth. Great job, guys! In your strong arming LGBT policies, you're causing record breaking suicides among your children. As statistics show, you have several (of any age) LGBT people in every ward, silently suffering all the insults and name calling, struggling to keep the commandments and wondering why everybody hates them. The guilt, shame, etc over something they never asked for or wanted, and something that _will not go away_ , no matter how "valiant" you are. There are serious, _legitimate_ reasons people leave. It's not for a lack of trying or faith. And most of them have severe, severe emotional distress upon discovering the whole thing isn't even true. Most DID NOT want to come to this conclusion. So keep repeating myths about this topic, you'll never get to the truth of the matter.
Someone did hurt my feelings and offended me, because I'm an apostate lesbian. They said really mean things to me...so I left. ;) I used some ellipse for your amusement!
i'm sorry about your cat, but it's good to see you're getting on. the best thing to do is get another pet, i've been told. as for myself i carry everything inside me and can't move on not for at least 10 years. mormon apologetics i think i could write it down without listening to a word, but maybe i can follow your lead and have a chuckle at their expense, and maybe laugh at myself too. mormon doctrine: what is it? no body knows. nobody in the whole world knows what mormon doctrine is. but a million mormons are set to tell me that i don't know mormon doctrine and i don't understand it and i misquote it. they also tell sandra tanner she doesn't know mormon doctrine and she's been studying it for 50 years. in 1857 the mormons surrounded a wagon train and massacred 120 men women and children. what doctrine were they following? i hesitate to ask. blood atonement: is it really weird? no not really. they should re-institute fast and testimony/blood atonement sunday. 5 people were blood atoned today after fast and testimony meeting. starting a church for profit: are you referring to the bank fraud/land speculation/counterfeiting/being supported by the church schemes? i think that falls under the catagory of speaking evil of the lord's anointed. see blood atonement above. tithing: jewish farmers were the only ones who paid tithing. jesus did not pay tithing because he was a carpenter. doesn't the mormon church have enough faith in the scriptures, to follow them accurately? where is blood atonement when they really need it? well zelphs, i feel much better now. i just don't know should i laugh or cry?

(Loved your enthusiasm!!!)
BTW--never read a lick of "anti" lit in my life--the essays brought me out of the church!!! Thank the universe for the essays!!! Freedom for me!!! (I was in the bishopric when this all happened--after a 3 year stint as a high councilman--no cafeteria mormon here!!)
YOU JUST NEED TO PRAY HARDER WITH YOUR HEAD IN HAT
WHAT IS BISHOP PRICK
Yes, you are not WORTHY of the truth my friend. The TRUTH only reveals itself to the WORTHY. Right! hah...
Sorry to hear about your experience. If you ever do decide to come back we'll welcome you with open arms:)
Yap, next Sunday, Drop like a lead balloon
1 reason why I left the church: A library card
You do know the church has its own library. You can get all the knowledge you need there. They even have their own University. Why would you ever need a public library card. 😉
@@robinsaxophone232 Do you have a public library card?
@Mike Tafuna. I sure do
@@robinsaxophone232 Why would you need one when the church has it's own library with all that knowledge you mentioned?
Mike Tafuna I was being sarcastic
I listen to these response videos while I get ready in the morning like podcasts :)
'The Church is an Open Book'

I had to go through a process to have “permission” to attend a different ward at one point. Because I felt so alone in the “assigned” ward. It was stupid.
This is the best!! You guys are wonderful.
Official LDS doctrine is that which can be used to defeat doubters. The first rule of Mormon doubt club is that you must not talk about doubt club.
I have found that before I read anything by Greg Trimble, I need to remove all sharp objects from reach so I don't instinctively stab my eyes out. May also help to place an over mitt on your hand to ease the pain from when your palm hits your face... many, many times over the course of any article he spawns.
Also, Walsh is bad, but at least he seems to know he's an asshole and embraces it. Greg Trimble is an asshole that thinks he's a really good guy.
(For example: I wouldn't have to pay 10% of my hard earned few dollars, and I wouldn't have to read the scriptures on Sunday instead of my fantasy novel)
So it can be a valid reason for people to leave the church. But, in my own experience, it's more of a naive kid's reason why. Still a good a reason though. :)
Agreed!
yes more readings and analysis. Funny and informational
The kind of thinking in this article is VERY harmful for everyone involved. No compassion, blatant avoidance of information, blaming of victims, damaging mind control thought patterns, it's got it all!
CULT!
The irony that they say it's your own fault if you're offended yet are offended at so many things. Immodest clothing and behavior, piercings, tattoos, most music and movies, working on Sundays, profanity..... I could go on and on...
I love you guys. I feel like I am right there with you. Love the new kitties.
You guys...this.... is.... awesome! ....Thanks for..... taking the.... time..... I even up voted it this one. :) P.S. Excuse my grammar.
Aww, GREG! Love you. We hope you thoroughly enjoyed the sight of these kittens. ;)
haha! this was by far the coolest rebuttal to any of my stuff.
We'll try to add more choreography and pyrotechnics to the next one!
Hey Greg, do you live in Utah? If so, would you be interested in doing a video together?
Think less "Real Time with Bill Maher" and more "Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee"
An observation on the use of ellipses: those at the tail end of the boomer generation who got FB/social media after their college age children - those are the people who overuse ellipses ad nauseum.
sorry about your cat should've put garments on the cat
I like to comment on Gregs facebook posts and see all of the mormons freak out and use ad hominem attacks. They usually just say that im having a bad day lol
You should do a reading on Michael Goodman's LDS Perspectives podcast interview, "What is LDS Doctrine? ". It screwed me up when I was still TBM, and mindscrewed every Mormon I quoted it to.
I just listened to that and can I say it makes about as much sense as anything else in the church. Which is to say, it makes no sense at all. The mental gymnastics are incredible.
Omg I died when Sam said, “He’s stepping on the pillow with his toilet paws. 😑”
Great video guys. You slayed that TBM idiots rants.
Greg Trimble may not always be in the church. His apologetic talk makes him sound suspect to me.
Joker clip was a perfect cutaway. 👏
I like your guys videos but I love your writing on your website. It is high quality writing. Keep up the good work!
The actual top 5 reason not to leave the church:
1.- the likelyhood of making friends anywhere else is zero
2.- you would rather join a marriage as the 15 wife than join the workforce and earn a paycheck
3.- it seems much easier to pray and ask god than conduct an experiment using a control and variable
4.- you have an unexplainable desire to ask non-related children to sit on your lap while telling them about a supernatural figure that has undying love for them so long as their parents aren't gay
5.- a senile man who can't remember his name has begged you not to leave
I do fast - intermittant fasting which is just the technical term for no breakfast and not eating before 11.30
Came for the kittens, stayed for the Matt Walsh joke 😂
Classic cat in the toilet! 😂 I'm sure you had fun with those kittens- they're probably all grown up now!
Haha, got an ad for God's Not Dead.
Berry Bostwick I get a lot of Bible adds on athiest channles lol Hey that's like ¢2 in their pocket!
There are certain types where it is actually comforting to know that they are enemies of the Restored Gospel.
Not only does this guy not have any decent arguments, he's just a terrible writer. I died inside when he wrote "if something is strange, is it really?" Yes. The answer is yes. If it's strange, then it's strange. That be how words do.
I snort/spilt my drink and stained my clothes at "...thats what she said..." DANG YOU! (G Rated Curse) XD
NUMBER ONE REASON THEY LEAVE IS BECAUSE THEY UNDERSTAND LDS IS CULT, GROUP HIGH DEMAND CULT
It breaks my heart when other people judge my religion. (I’m mormon too)
Where Is My McDonald's? Don't watch then. People have valid, serious reasons for this and most did _not_ want to discover these inconvenient truths. So if you're not willing to truly investigate the why, don't watch ex Mormon videos!!!

god comes down to earth: "Mormonism is not true!"
Mormons: This is a test of our faith! It's proof that mormonism is true because god himself said it isn't!
I swear this is how they would react
Ok, idk if it's the makeup or what but in this video you really could pull off a Sansa cosplay :O
23:48, the BEST!
I'm so sorry Sam
Thanks. :)
As an ex mormon. I don't blame ex mormons for being atheists. When you've been lied to that Ferociously....it's hard to even think about God again.
Reason number 594,848 to leave the church... Brigham Young said very tall quaker looking people lived on the moon, I have the JOD in my possession and he really did say that:
“Who can tell us of the inhabitants of this little planet that shines of an evening, called the moon?... When you inquire about the inhabitants of that sphere you find that the most learned are as ignorant in regard to them as the ignorant of their fellows. So it is in regard to the inhabitants of the sun. Do you think it is inhabited? I rather think it is. Do you think there is any life there? No question of it; it was not made in vain.”
- Prophet Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses, v. 13, p. 271
My dad had big library of LDS books because he read non-stop, believer and apologist.
But why would you want to stay in the church after you've read that? The JOD is madness.
The things I know. I know. Don't give me new information. I already know.
I'm really sorry, but I had to say this: Tanner looks a lot like Paul from "Paul and Morgan." I'm really glad he grew his hair out.
!!!!!!!
Polygamy is still central. Dreaming of the 50 room mansion above and 70 virgins. Has polygamy in the celestial kingdom been disavowed.
My doctor isnt mormon but is always telling me to cut out coffee. Mormons would love him.
Interesting!
❤❤❤
"Greg, you ass-hat!"
Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain
Sorry about your cat, but that's what happens to the unfaithful. I left the church and a few years later my 97-year-old grandmother died.

i'm sorry about your cat, but it's good to see you're getting on. the best thing to do is get another pet, i've been told. as for myself i carry everything inside me and can't move on not for at least 10 years.
mormon apologetics i think i could write it down without listening to a word, but maybe i can follow your lead and have a chuckle at their expense, and maybe laugh at myself too.
mormon doctrine: what is it? no body knows. nobody in the whole world knows what mormon doctrine is. but a million mormons are set to tell me that i don't know mormon doctrine and i don't understand it and i misquote it. they also tell sandra tanner she doesn't know mormon doctrine and she's been studying it for 50 years.
in 1857 the mormons surrounded a wagon train and massacred 120 men women and children. what doctrine were they following? i hesitate to ask.
blood atonement: is it really weird? no not really. they should re-institute fast and testimony/blood atonement sunday.
