    That Sakura theme song "Kono Omoi o Tsutaetai" or "I want you to know" never gets old, especially the version where she sings the lyrics.
    Fun fact: If you play the original Saturn version of the game on a standard CD player you'll get to listen to Sakura tell you your trying to play a Saturn disc, and the next couple of tracks is the actual theme song with lyrics.

    Even when I was little, when I played the Xbox 360 version, I was off put on how pixelated the characters looked compared to the portraits. And also, I'll give the GBA credit where credits due. The presentation is there for the most part. Hell, this version even has Sakura's song as a bonus! Sure, it's bitcrunched and is missing the second half of the song to save space, but at least it's there. Another great episode, even if I should probably sleep, since it's like 3am where I live. lol

    I grew up playing the HD version on my cousins' Xbox 360 and an emulated mobile port featured in the Capcom Arcade app. Puzzle Fighter is a fun game to play every once and a while, but I wish Capcom released sequels to the game back in the 90s and 2000s. I didn't get around to playing the mobile remake that came out a few years back, but I did enjoy playing a web-game clone of the game called "Super Mini Puzzle Heroes" that utilized Nickelodeon's cartoon characters from their late 2000s to early 2010s lineup of shows.

    This game was insanely popular over here, mostly on the PS1. Everyone praised it, especially in 2 players mode. I mean, it's a nice falling blocks puzzler and all, but is it that good? The 360/PS3 versions are almost disturbing with blurry zoomed sprites and reworked assets that look like they are straight from a mobile game. They should have just gone for the original pixellated look but I guess they needed those gimmicks to justify the "HD Remix" in the title.

    I downloaded a puzzle games compilation disc for the Dreamcast many years ago, "Jeff Ma's Puzzle Pack" or some such thing. It had this game on it, and my girlfriend at the time and I played the hell out of it -- really good game. Another game we played constantly was Puyo Puyo Fever, also really good (but I still prefer Puyo Puyo Sun on the Saturn).

      @@RetroCore One negative thing I will say about Fever is that the fever mode is too overpowered. It can turn the tide of a game in a way that just feels unfair. Puyo Sun and the previous games didn't have that problem. I haven't played any of the games after Fever.

    Ah, a very specific topic near and dear to my heart. Realistically, the only "battle" that really mattered with this game was between the two original releases contemporaneous with the arcade game's shelf life: Saturn vs. Playstation. I honed my skills on the PS version, but got to play it on Saturn from time to time. I was in for a shock. It was very often stated that even though the Saturn was a lesser beast when it came to 3D graphics, it could run circles around the PS when dealing strictly in 2D. Ironic, then, that the Saturn version of Puzzle Fighter frequently exhibits slowdown when many gems are breaking. The PS version simply never does. Could be argued the people who did the Saturn port failed to fully tap the Saturn, but the end result-possibly to be blamed on excessively complicated hardware-is still the reality we had to deal with: *The Saturn version is inferior.* I feel like this is something that would have been worth noting in this comparison.

    • @RetroCore
      @RetroCore  4 года назад

      Can't say I noticed any slowdown. Japanese game on a Japanese Saturn is how I was playing.

    • @Asterra2
      @Asterra2 4 года назад

      @@RetroCore You got lucky. Just google around for "puzzle fighter saturn slowdown". Plenty of folks over the decades have noted that the Saturn version slows down while PSX doesn't. Apparently-and I never thought about this-it has to do in part with how full both sides are with gems (sprites).

    I played the arcade version a few times with a friend back in the day but never really cared for it even though I generally like this style of puzzle game. I don't hate the game, but I never felt the desire to buy it or play it more than I did.

And definitelly cheaper than constructing "oldschool" PC with Pentium MMX, Windows 98 and Voodoo 2 :P (latter component very useful for 3D games from 90') Game looks quite fun, but looking on the Capcom's approach (and other japanese developers), there are zero chances for GOG release...

You just need to unpack it, turn on once the application (better leave watermarks on, because it's making easier to recognize if game is cooperating with it or not), save settings and copy all files from "MS" folder to folder with the game. Despite it's name, dgvoodoo is working with both 2D and 3D games.

You either attack your enemy with a single attack that will crush him at once or your attack will actually be GOOD for him to use as a counter attack. I'd prefer playing Puyo Puyo 2 over this any day.
    And speaking of Puyo Puyo.... the system of Super Puzzle Fighter 2 is *identical* to the system of an older Capcom game that stayed exclusive to arcade named "Pnickles"... and that game was actually developed by..... Compile.

    Oof! I can't believe how terrible the 360 sprites look. Too bad they did a lazy job with the artwork. I get that the original pixel animations wouldn't have matched the esthetic of a "HD remaster" with the clean portrait and BG artwork. TBQH I kinda wish they would have just released a definitive port with all the content but retained the awesome pixely art of the arcade and earlier console releases.
    I guess maybe it had to do with the era of gaming as software and hardware companies were really pushing how subjectively amazing HD was in comparison to SD. I'm not totally opposed to the concept silky smooth animations and high resolution remasters of classic 2D games but picking a terrible pixel upscaling filter completely ruins the experience for me. Such a shame. I guess redrawing every sprite of animation wasn't within the budget and ruined what could have been a really amazing experience.

    • @RetroCore

    Unpopular opinion: I don't get the appeal of Super Puzzle Fighter 2. I know it's just one of Street Fighter spin-offs but if I want to play puzzle games similar to this, I may as well play Puyo Pop series. Also, quite a shame to see the Windows port to be that choppy, is the hardware you used for that port emulated or real? I bet it could run at least well on Pentium machines.

      The windows port can run perfectly smooth but it just doesn't work well on a modern version of Windows. I was trying to run this on Windows 10.

      @@RetroCore I've seen this happen to a lot of Win95 games on this show. Have you tried installing Win95 onto a VM?

      The Windows version is quite good, generally speaking, but as Retro Core said, it's a mess on modern machines. Besides that, the near-constant loading really kills the pace. I even converted my disc into an ISO and ran it through a drive emulator to try and alleviate it, it was so bad.

      I actually agree with you. Without the Street Fighter branding, this wouldn't have nothing to offer different from other puzzle games had done before and better. Its system is pretty broken IMO and I completely agree with you: Puyo Puyo 2 is waaaay better tha SPF2X . Or any Puyo Puyo game for the matter :)

    No 240p on Dreamcast = FAIL
    Interlacing on CPS games sucks!

      Err, it was running at 480p so it wasn't interlaced. If you had a VGA set up 98% of Japanese releases ran in progressive scan natively.

      Play Mouja or Money Idol Exchanger if you want a hard puzzle game.

      That still easy same as Magical Drop play but this one that counter gems is really troublesome to me just call me weak or useless player but that different gems and how to use it make puzzle game hard at least to me.
