Even Sanjay knows he is a fake Christopher Nolan of India. Just over rate art director who loves making reels of long lorn love...unrequitted love..u can only make someone feels bad only for 2 mins..then life moves on. But Bansali is hell bent to make over budgetted reela of Pakizaah. From Devdas to HM all same..shameful India projects him to be an ace dire tor..he no more than self loving director..and we audience has to sit thru his hours and hours of costly reel. Khamoshi was his first and last genuine attempt. Others are all poor copies... this Heera Mandi is one more example of what could have been than just reels

Alamzeb is terribly miscast!! It spoiled the whole show. Someone told Sharmin segal that a deadpan face for every single emotion= good acting. Such a central character should have been played by a more worthy performer. Spoiled the whole show for me. I just couldn’t feel for her. I was more interested in Satto Phatto Saima ans Iqbal - all great actors .
Scenes were too quick - key character moments were skimmed through. For e.g Sonakshi suddenly realizes that she wants to be a freedom fighter overnight. This is because Taj’s death scene is poorly directed. Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi , Aditi and the actor who plays Zaheeda are WOW!

  • @sonalipathak6724

Bhansali's writing has been subpar for quite some time. It is almost as if dialoguebaazi and "filmy" punch lines have become a substitute for writing in his films. Having seen Shogun recently, one cannot help but compare what happens when stellar writing comes together with attention to detail. Shogun worked stupendously when characters were verbally sparring and outsmarting each other with great writing whilst wearing stunning costumes in splendid sets (kudos to the production design). Bhansali appears to be content dialing up the volume on costumes and production design whilst hoping that dialogues alone will move the story forward. It has almost become formulaic in his case - a set template for what a SLB project will be. As a viewer, I yearn for the days of Khamoshi - maybe what his films need is a little less dialoguebaazi and a little more silence.

I agree! SLB could have easily pulled this off with a 3 hours film. The desire to watch a full-fledged Bhansali Series was much awaited but the writing falls shorts and made it unexciting. Though Manisha Koirala stands out with her fantastic performance.
Also a SLB x Shreya Ghoshal song finally made through towards the end.

    @adhikaralasomashekar3503 Месяц назад +16

It seems that Meena Kumari's PAKEEZAH is one of the favourite movies of Sanjay Bhansali.
The KOTHA Culture depicted in the movie is not real but ULTRA GLAMORIZED. The writing is poor and the Urdu language doesn't sound like Urdu if you compare it with movies like "Umrao Jaan" , "Pakeezah" , "Razia Sultan" , "Baazaar" or "Mughal E Azam".
    The writing is pedestrian.
Therefore performances and dialogues "to quote Mirza Ghalib" lacked "ताक़त-ए-गुफ़तार".
If anyone has seen an old Documentary on Doordarshan about real KOTHAS they were dirty, filthy, rotten claustrophobic places where crime against women were committed.
Therefore the Web series is another gross misrepresentation of KOTHAS.

    INACCURACIES OF HEERAMANDI:
1, coronavirus news of 2022 in 1920's newspaper fareedan was reading.
2, heeramandi set in punjab , bhansali used lakhnawi dresses for male and female instead of punjabi suits.
    3. Umera ahmed novel of 2004 peer e kamil was shown in 1920's era, umera was not even born then 😂.
    4. SLB couldn't get the cut of an englishman's suit. Those were either double breasted or 3 piece with waistcoat.
5, georgraphical inaccuracy of the landscape, some lake shown when there was none in actual lahore, The most evident landmark still visible from every building in today’s remnants of Heera Mandi is the Shahi Qilla-Grand Mosque’s doom and minarets skyline. If you call it Lahore, show Lahore."
6, alamzeb reading urdu book from left to right as if she was reading some English poem 😂
How can your creative genius let go of such major inaccuracies in this period drama. Lahore stilll exist and you can't take such creative liberties. The world will laugh lol 😂

Dushman ne Dhusmani chhod di, aap series chhod de.
We as audience gave so much shit to KJO for making Kalank, & nobody will talk shit about SLB. I'm a huge SLB fan honestly, I've watched every single film of his atleast 15 times, I'm disappointed. Big time. Micast, Rekhaji would have been so much better for Manisha's role.

Heeramandi made me want to see Pakeezah, yet again, another time. .
    What I loved :
Bhansali’s beautiful world with the stunning sets, women, costumes, jewellery - I was awestruck & in love!!
Manisha Koirala was the true Mallika of this one! What a comeback!
Although this was nowhere as “Paak” (pure) as Pakeezah, its still an ode & Bhansali clearly is as obsessed with Pakeezah, as I am :
    - Alamzeb’s hair in the small urli, taken from Meena Kumari’s iconic shot in the giant-size urli
    - When Manisha K screams “Qutubuddin” - I could hear Veena’s “Shahabuddin”!
Though nothing can match the haunting “aaj hum apni duaon ka asar” & the dance on glass, but SBL had to copy that walking on glass too
    - Bringing Alam to his home, with relatives sleeping, yet cannot match the OG Uncle voice - “tum yeh bazaari gaali hume nahin de sakte”! Wowwww - what a dialogue!!
    - Tribute to Rajkumar’s tent on the seaside/lake side (Very Vanyavilas 😊)
    - The macro shot from top (very Gangubai vibes) with black figures & tonga breezing through it! Outstanding! Richa Chadha’s post death scene & song was the best shot; as per me
(Frankly, for me, post this scene, the series nosedived!)
    - Loved the touch of Asa Singh Mastana’s Heer playing so softly in the background in one of the gambling scenes
    - Loved that Azaadi song - nice tribute to “hum dekhenge” (Iqbal Bano)
What I felt sad about :
SLB is the only one who could have tried to make something close to Pakeezah. He attempted it & spent so much. Yet, he failed! There’s no way he can repeat this feat & scale & try again- this made me sad!
After the first 2-3 episodes, he was running in all directions. He could not put soul in the romance of Alam & Taj - so so wrong as he is the master of emotion & romance
It was tiresome after first 3, it lost the edge. He should have contained it in a 2-3 hour movie! Post that, it drags - I felt more sad than anything else. Too disjointed!
Bhansali says he cant see his movies as he’s too critical. He shouldn’t see this one. It’ll make him realise that he had so much going for himself yet he messed it up - “royally”!
I feel for him! Aisa mauka phir kahan milega . .

Very flamboyant, the foreign actor acted well but Koirala fails to impress. Sets are opulent but look artificial, still can’t place the time it’s depicting with modern light bulbs and shades, improbable back then. Costume guy could get an Oscar. Guess Netflix did good to make it in India as this kinda production would cost through the roof in Hollywood. My first impressions, it’s exactly what you expect of Bhansali. Aditi Rao exudes sexuality reminds me of Megan Fox in Transformer, could be the next Smita Patil. Other actors are average.

"Don't question it, just submit to it" that for summarises the problem that plagues theatre, cinema and performing arts not just in Bollywood, not just in India but all over the world..yes all over the world..just because of a name, just because it 'looks' good..just because the previous product by the same name was good..lets just surrender and not really objectively examine the merits and demerits of a product..just because of the names associated with it..this elitist and ostriching is what makes directors, actors, technicians and performers across the board, palm of their substandard products as the critics fall over each other to give them awards for their scented trash..because critics just don't criticise anymore..they "surrender"

Manisha Koirala is great. Her dance scenes only remind me of kehna hi kya and satrangi re.
This director should become a set designer, it seems. That's all it seems like he cares about. I dont think he can make another khamoshi, hum dil de chuke sanam, devdas or guzaarish or gangubai
    1. She could have found the lost pearl in the hammam during the day time.
    2. I'd rather listen to the songs without watching the women dance or sing on it. They're not good.
    3. Tawaifs were not prostitutes.
    4. Sharmin can't act.
    5. People are just fascinated by the shiny stuff, poor acting and script doesn't matter.
    6. Sanjay Leela bhansali needs to stop depending so much on frills decor etc, and start paying attention to script and dialogues. All the simps are going ga ga.
    7. Madhuri would have been excellent instead of Sonakshi. Sonakshi isn't as ripe in acting.
    8. Manisha, richa, Fareeda jalal, sanjeeda are brilliant.
    9. The real heeramandi tawaifs were fully clothed and were still sought after. Look at the real pictures of heeramandi.
    10. It was a stupid choice to keep the same faces for parent and child. Especially if there are flashbacks. It gets very muddled. The timelines are not very distinct.
    Very boring.

Same flat face when is angry, in love or when her lover died.. all i could was her lips.. aditi and sanjeeda sheikh stole the show.. rest were not so good.. and also instead of sonakshi they could have casted some young actress because i dont think that tawaifs who we're at the peak of their career were so old.. richa chadha sonakahi all looked very aged because tawaifs who were at peak of their career were around 20-25...

What absolutely didn't make sense to me was Rehana and Fareedan having the same face :P wth was that. They could've easily used another actress for Rehana.

What Heeramandi succeeds in doing is foregrounding the appropriated and controversial history of the tawaifs who turned from devdasis to tawaifs to nautch girls and at then end sex workers and that is what the focal point of the series was. The series tries and successfully (in my opinion) brings forth all these aspects of the history of courtesans. Some might require patience with it because it doesn't run on shock value and sensationalism. It is a beautiful, poignant and a series that has something to say.

It was great watch. Everyone converted into a freedom fighter so quick. The set designs, the clothes were all Amazing. Typo is SLB esthetic that I love. I just have one big issue. This is all happening in Lahore and these women are all Muslim: so technically they should have used the Pakistani flag 🇵🇰 twice that they used a flag. Why would Lahori courtesans be rooting for India? Considering that they are still there in HM on Firt road in Lahore. The well to do ones who became actresses have moved to better affluent neighborhoods. That area is has a lot of hustle and bustle now due to quaint and old Lahore food centric st right behind Badshah’s masjid. Anyways these particular group was not rooting to move to India. They were rooting for creation of. To me it’s a story to Pakistani working girls…SLB this was a big mistake…. Or u could have showing some city in not India. But Lahore had everyone’s attention as there is nothing like Lahore nor will be…
