Thanks for the comparison! I've done quite a few voice-overs on both these mics and the 170 is my all time favorite mic (I own a 170i). I've never liked the U87. I always felt I was fighting it, that it took the punch out of my voice. The best audio engineer I've known, Bert Penninx (God have his soul), always put me on a 170 to do commercials, and said about the U87: "It's for singing!".
The TLM-103 is no different than the u87 in that regard. It was meant for capturing instruments with the freakish sensitivity of a bat. Even using the u87 emulations on a Sphere L22 I'm left with one big question.... Why? I just don't get it. I'm not a singer and maybe that explains it.
Yes. The 87 has a disconnected sounding top end. For the 87Ai it should be around 10k and for the 87i it should be around 8k. I find it to be less offensive with the 87i. The K89 capsule mics (the 170, 193 and 89) sound amazing to me. They have fantastic low - low mid range response that makes the body of a voice sound virtually undefeatable. You can listen to it through an array of playback systems and you will not lose that sense of fullness, which cannot be said for a lot of microphones. Fun fact: the TLM 193 is the mic they use to record the voices for Family Guy.
If people don’t wanna use eq , and more top highs use a u87 . if someone says it is great as it is use a tlm170i or 193 whatsoever. Also someone can use a tlm170i with a compressor not in action only for the transformer a bit. It can crank up the highs a little. In this example they both sound good but the tlm170 just a little bit better. An other “if money doesn’t mean anything to you “ a Fairchild 660 clone makes the u87 a 20k dollar mik . But as always you must measure it by your self. Greetzzz
Hello. I saw your youtube channel. Your video is much less. And I see that your video is not SEO relatively optimized. Video views will not increase for this. And I have seen many problems with your channel that will solve your RUclips channel ranking.
This was super insightful! Thanks again for taking the time to share this with us!
My pleasure!

Great ear! That was a TLM 103 so a different microphone but still in the same lineup. This one is a TLM 170R. They look fairly similar.

Ah yes, my mistake! I was just getting over being sick when recording this one. That may be the difference.
