  • This fire is the largest wildland fire in recorded history to strike the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range and the third largest in California. The fire is still active as of this writing in mid October. The first two weeks saw extreme fire behavior resulting in the loss of 112 structures. In this presentation you will see this extreme behavior up close and personal as the fire runs through stands of tall timber and crosses highways as if they weren't there. Total acreage so far is 257,171 or 402 square miles, very nearly the size of Los Angeles City and that is huge.

That's seriously terrifying. Fire up as high as the trees, and fire crossing the road like that. Hope you got control of it after a while. My respect to you all.

Tells you how wide firebreaks have to be.
Thanks for a fantastic video..one of my favorites ones of fire behavior

Best wildfire video I've ever seen. The Rimfire occurred 50 miles East of my home.

Wow, that's the best footage I have seen of the fire and I have watched dozens and dozens on RUclips. It really is a beast! I have never seen the flames move so fast! It's like they're jet propelled and the twisting and spinning, it's wild. You also captured the sound which is just like people have described it; a thundering roar like a huge waterfall or a Hercules airplane. Man, that is some scary shite and it's hard to imagine what all of the hotshots and firefighters were thinking when they got caught in one of these.

I've been a wildland firefighter since 1992. That was impressive. Thanks for sharing.

@ 1:19 (Deadpan) "I don't think we're holding the road." Having been in similar situations, I nearly laughed so hard that I fell out of my chair! FWIW, I think with all the spotting etc you should have bailed sooner. Good fire behavior vid, though. Glad you made it out.
Nice work. Too bad it went gunnysack on those boys. Sucks when you loose it like that.

80 foot kiln-dried Christmas trees on both sides of a 50 foot wide road. No way they really thought the fire would just magically stop there.

Outdated video - The Creek Fire is now the largest in the Sierra Nevada, beating the Rim Fire by 100,000+ acres, and the fourth largest in California. The top five all occurred in 2020.

I've fought wildland for the past decade now and I am impressed and I've seen my fair share of "firestorms".

Well, that's some amazing footage! I knew it was bad just not how bad. I live in Buck Meadows, the few of us here win for the first to be evacuated thanks to this fire, when it blew up, it really blew up. Headed to my bosses house at Pine Mountain Lake for a day or two, then the fire started to threaten that area there too. Off we go again, me and my enormous malamute Mika squeezed in the small back seat of the company F-250, headed to Modesto to a friends house. The one thing that is seared into my memory, heading to Modesto I was on 108/120 just east of Knights Ferry when I caught it in my rear view mirror, the just enormous plume of smoke coming off the mountain. All I could think was "Oh my God, that's home".

How can you be so close to the fire? Doesn't the paint melt off the trucks? Aren't you worried that maybe the vehicle won't start and you'd be trapped? Wow, it must take a lot of courage to stand there.

I was noticing the same thing, the photographer seemed to be cutting his escape times really close in quite a few of those shots. A random gust of wind can change things in a hurry.

Also, all I ever see you guys doing is this....^ taking video and pictures. What exactly is it you do? Structural protection engines I see working tirelessly. Heavy equipment operators as well. What do "hotshots" and cal fire engines do aside from drive around and take pics? Occasionally break out a saw and cut a few limbs. I've ran dozer on fire and the amount of wasted money paying people to do nothing is insane. Leave it to the dozers, air attack and Structural protection task forces. Get rid of these stupid forest service entities. Privatize every bit of it. The forest management. Oversight etc.
