    If you would've told my 11 year old self (when the PlayStation first came out) that I'll eventually be able to play ALL PS1 games on an SD card via ODE, I probably would've thought you were crazy. Love these types of modern upgrades to retro consoles!

    yeah those PSX systems were notorious for having the drives fail, (skipping audio/fmv, all of that stuff) so this ODE is definitely a godsend! maybe someday I'll pick up an old dusty PSX and try to get this and the memory card pro I'd be set for life!

      One of the first things you'd do is turn the PS1 on it's side when playing games. I did that and got another year or two out of my system. It doesn't work if the disk drive is totally broken but would help when it had just started mis-reading disks.

  • @WhiteJarrah
    @WhiteJarrah 2 года назад +8

    Personally, I'm always apprehensive about removing the disc drive. I'd much rather see an SD card adapter that goes into the memory card slot. I don't know if its possible to boot PS1 games off a memory card, but sometimes the best mods are the ones that require no surgery. I mean, you can also boot games off USB sticks and even desktop harddrives on PS2 using Free McBoot and a hacked PS3 can load ripped games off USB or internal memory. Even the PSP and Vita can read ripped games if hacked. The PS1 needs a mod-free solution too.

    • @COBOL
      @COBOL 2 года назад +2

      I don't think it's feasible. I don't think the PS1 can load any software from memory card. The best way to have a mod-less solution it's using the parallel port that it's quite fast, look for PSIO. Still need a mod but it's a start...

    • @WhiteJarrah
      @WhiteJarrah 2 года назад +2

      @@COBOL PS1 recently got its own version of Free McBoot. It's called FreePSXBoot. To my knowledge, it's used to boot imports games and burned discs without any need for a mod chip. But if they can get or something similar to boot games off the memory card that would be a literal game changing.

    • @lordeilluminati
      @lordeilluminati 2 года назад

      thing is, the PS2 is possible to do solderless mods because of some design choices of the console in the first place. Free MC boot is not magic, it takes advantage of an unused (kinda, only used on launch day models) feature of upgrading firmware through the memory card, so it replaces to a custom one which creates "links" to applications not signed by Sony. FMCB is completely incompatible with models that had this feature removed like the 90000 series. The simple design of the PS1 makes solderless mods harder to execute, the console never expects to run anything other than the disc drive. Other issue with solderless mods is that, sometimes they add overhead to the game loading process, like on the Dreamcast. GDEMU is far better than using Dreamshell and an SD Card to Serial adapter, not only because the serial port speeds are inferior to the disc drive, but because it isnt loading an app on the background to load the game (sometimes you need to tell Dreamshell where to stick the loading routine into the RAM to not interfere with the game), whereas GDEMU simply works with 98% of the game library, although it is not a software mod, it is very simple to install and use.
      The closest solderless game loading I think would be possible for the PS1 is something like tonyhax and psio together. The current psio requires an mod to make the console actually load the psio menu (again, the console wasnt designed to run code from the parallel port by itself).

  • @KITT171
    @KITT171 Год назад

    Only recently through thinking about things and all decided to get one of these, when I kind of was already fine with the PSIO but the more I looked into things, XStation seemed more appealing, more affordable too overall. I admit the PlayStation 1 I have, disc drive is fine, as was the Saturn I have... which I got the MODE for so, sure you can see the pattern here. Haven't got it yet but looking forward to it and you helped me with this video be more clear about how it all works and what to expect with it. I did find someone, maybe who you referred to even that offers for cost naturally a service to install it which yeah that's for me all the way so grateful for that too. Point is thank you for the video and being clear about its features really appreciate it.

    I will say as well incase someone doesn't know if you're installing this into a pal console it will run NTSC games but you need to use an RGB Scart cable to bypass the colour encoding if you use composite or S video the colours will be messed up that's just a limitation of the Pal PlayStation in can fixed by installing a mod but honestly if you're in the PAL region our CRTs supported RGB scart natively so I'd say just use that :)

    Intrigued by the GameShark application options...
    🔴 Is it required to have a GameShark memory card and...
    🔴 ... a (matched?) hardware parallel port add-on and, ...
    🔴 ... if so, were there more than one version of the GameShark memory card to match with a version of GameShark software or [other factor(s)]?
    🤔 It'd be interesting to know if XStation happened to support "custom music [playlist]" via emulating the ol' music CD swap after having loaded the game disc's map/stage/track into memory then automatically make the switch back to game disc when the map/stage/track is finished. ... I.e., the echo effects of tunnels can be heard applied to the CD music on the likes of, IIRC, at least one Wipeout title and that of R4: Ridge Racer Type 4. I don't recall a long list of titles supporting such a swap but hearing the music receiving the added level of immersion from the spatial acoustics applied in-game and delivered digitally in the quality of an HDMI connection from the PS1Digital would be a nice happenstance.

    Yeah I own like two ps1's and a ps one.None of the disc drives work in any of them, Yet my older snes still works fine. All of those mid 90's to early 2000's disc drives were complete garbage. Just like with the original xbox, if you got one with the Samsung drive you were lucky, the Thompson drives were terrible.

    Cha you know wut this to me sounds like a failure of optical drives vs solid state electronics. I mean sure in the nineties the optical drives of PlayStation consoles were reliable enough for the original PlayStation to reach 100 million lifetime sales but almost 30 years later optical drives are dying like flies while the cartridge slots in N64 consoles are carrying on just fine. And you don’t get disc rot with rom chips or flash memory.
    Therefore I find it ironic that solid state storage is now saving PlayStation consoles with busted disc drives. But that aside I’m hoping a for parts only PS1 I got for ten bucks a few years ago only has a busted disc drive so that I can do this mod and turn it into something really cool

    You should do Xstation vs Psio,.... the only thing i don´t like about this is that you still need to do some sodding, the Free McBoot solution for the ps2 is sooooo simple, and i rather run ps1 games from a thumb drive through free mcboot and emulators on ps2, with opl, but for those who can install xstation or psio well... congrats
