The beginning of the Badab Wars is still a reminder of the massive administration organization of the Imperium, and how the enemies of mankind will take advantage of. The Astral Claws perhaps would’ve stayed loyal to the Imperium if the High Lord’s of Terra filled their requests for reinforcements, but one must remember that the High Lords were focus on other issues and the Imperium is in a constant state of war against other forces.
Man, I love the Badab War so much. It's the deep political web that threads through this conflict that just makes it so interesting. The best part about it is how vague they left many aspects of the war and what led up to the war that creates very different perspectives on the nature of Huron and the Astral Claws. For example, Oculus Imperia has a very clear narrative bias towards vilifying Huron from the offset, while I much prefer the perspective that Huron was an absolute genius and hero of the Imperium that just took things too far when he simply realized that they were on their own in defending the Maelstrom Zone. Seriously, it's just awesome.
What's great about Oculus's narrative is that it's indicative of the Imperium and its terrible disposition towards revisionism of past events. Although Oculus seeks to view history free of bias or emotions, even he is not completely unclouded of his own prejudices of the Astral Claws, in light of the Red Cordairs they would eventually "evolve" into.
I came out of this video with a defensible position of "Huron did nothing wrong". He eventually did wrong, but unless you and Oc are breezing over excessive use of Exterminatus, then so far so good. Huron is just playing as best as he can with the hand he's been dealt. Even if he is over performing on easy wins, the morale boost to friends and morale blow to foes justify it.

Easily my favorite nugget of the entire 40K's lore. Huron is a brilliantly written "fallen angel", but apart from him and his legion of psychos, both the loyalists and the remaining secessionists were presented in a way that doesn't clearly paint neither side as entirely righteous nor evil. Also, the fact that the "loyalists" had both Asterion Moloc, Tyberos the Red Wake, and their respective Chapters on their side, really completes the picture of how nightmarishly brutal and deranged the "good guys" really were at the time of this war... It's an eyewatering treat of a story, start to finish, but it also really helps to know the background of each of the world's planets, subsectors, their politics and internal intricacies in order to digest and appreciate it whole, so big thanks to Oculus for dropping this 👌

I love this lore in 40k, as despite the actions of the astral claws seeming completely justified and just a repeat of similiar actions done by other astartes chapters, it seems the maelstrom was still ever so slightly corrupting enough to push them over the edge into succession from the imperium.
