The Packers are always “solid”. Draft and develop is rarely spectacular until guys become spectacular. They made 2 splash moves in free agency and then filled holes in the draft.

I would disagree that under gute we only end up with solid guys. Love, Gary, jaire Zach Tom Elton hell u can even throw Watson in there. Esp if he stayed healthy. All are way above solid. They 100% fill holes for sure but I think under gute the "just solid" guys is false. I also think gute doesn't get enough credit for his f/a signings.

Hey, Aaron! Probably a bigger splash in the first round gets an A. Just to differentiate the lucky teams that picked top 15 with A's. I give us an A for getting what we needed most!

Having listened to a few other national reporters’ thoughts, I’m assuming adding/taking a CB high in the draft would’ve moved it into A territory. An example, Bill Barnwell said it’s concerning the Packers are basically asking Eric Stokes to be healthy and a CB2 this upcoming season (never minding the fact that Valentine is the presumptive CB2, but national media gonna national media)

Old style traditionalist Packer fan here, I think it's absolutely ridiculous grading a draft this early, you just can't say who's a miss or a home run right now. Most of these guys ranking draft picks are the ones who had several of their own mock draft picks & if the Packers didn't pick anybody that they picked, they are automatically pissed & downgrade the Packers actual draft. I say @ the very earliest, grade this draft @ the end of the season but still would go another full year before I stuck my neck out.

It's more about grading the process than giving the final grade. You can't grade for results since that won't happen until year 4, but you certainly can evaluate the process.

  • @Swizz12

Grades often do not reflect where a team drafts. The Bears had 4 picks. They got Caleb (pick 1), Odunze (pick 9), Amegadje (75) and punter Tory Taylor in round 4. Many pundits gave them an A for that, but it is hard to go wrong when you have two of the top 9 picks including first overall, and withthe benefit of them having a very high grade but no opportunity (yet) to justify or lament on the players. I would have downgraded them a bit for having so few picks (ie roster management could have been better)............and again for their acquisition of a punter in round 4. The Packers managed things better (more picks) and got quality players where they needed them. Overall I'd rate them above the Bears, draft-wise, taking into account where they both picked.

Good post, Aaron. I'm a big fan of PFF, but no one gets it right all the time. Contrast their board with what teams thought of players. Our GM stated you can't fixate on players, which is what we draftniks do all the time! lol Just the first 4 picks puts the team in the "A" category for the draft, if you ask me, and add Xavier McKinney and Josh Jacobs to the mix, I feel the offseason grade is also an A. Let's not forget we have a new defensive coordinator who is generating a lot of excitement, too. Maybe my glasses are green, but I'm very pleased with what the Packers have done so far this off-season .

Most of the national draft pundits like "value picks" in relation to the consensus's draft big board. It appears that they don't like the selections of TyRon Hopper and Evan Williams, believing that they were both "reaches" taken a round or two too soon. It will be interesting to see who has the better "crystal ball" looking into the future, the national draft pundits or the Packers. The smart money is on the Packers. Go Pack Go!

An A? Usually its about the glitz and glamour.. Had the Packers drafted a skill position, like a WR, or CB, it would have garnered an A. O-line isn't a glamorous job. Had the Packers signed some big name free agent, that'd've gotten them an A. But there isn't a Reggie White every year.

An A rating would’ve been given for doing more in FA and drafting closer to consensus. From a popular national media standpoint, they did indeed get McKinney, awesome move, but they washed more or less at RB, slight overpay for Nixon, and according to consensus in the draft took some missteps. That’s why it’s a B from that standpoint whether in reality it’s an A or an F.

    • @brandenjoseph604

This imaginary idea of consensus is wild. You don't know what consensus is. Teams themselves don't have consensus. Multiple scouts on the same team will look at a player and oftentimes come up with very different grades/rounds for a player. Ultimately, you have no idea where a guy would have gone. You are relying on random internet mock drafts by non NFL team people. But we do the same stuff every year. "So and so team drafted someone in the 7th who had a 3rd round grade, what a steal." Or "they could have got that guy two rounds later.
In real life, the first guy is a 7th rounder and the 3rd round mock drafts were full of crap. 32 NFL teams told you he was a 7th rounder. Not mel from ESPN. That's consensus. And the second guy is a 1st rounder, not a 3rd. You have no clue where he would have went so there is no consensus. Finally, this imaginary consensus means nothing. Russell Wilson was a reach in the 3rd round according to consensus. "Consensus" first round picks bust all the time and "consensus" late round guys go on to be pro bowlers and hall of famers. Consensus is full of crap in talent evaluation.

@@brandenjoseph604 consensus is the consensus board. We know what it is and this is what many people react to and base their opinions off of. I’m not saying it’s right, only that it’s what people do and that it influences all the grades and reactions to grades that gets people going on this type of content. Nags - what the Packers could have done to earn an A grade is the reason that everyone is rating the Steelers as having the best draft. The Steelers took Butkus Award winning linebacker Payton Wilson at #99 when the Packers passed on him at #91 for Tyron Hopper. Hopper seems like a likeable young man who will work hard and I want him to succeed, but it is very frustrating when Gutekunst gives a 10 minute speech about how ACL injuries are not a big deal anymore, but we pass on the Butkus Award winner when linebacker was our biggest need because of some ACL concern. Now you know why we got a B.
