Hi Andy! Love your enthusiastic videos about meshtastic and the custom music. My interest in the project has also gone up and down, but with the constant updates and customizeability I always get dragged back in. Especially with the new GUI update that is coming. I use it a bit differently, with an esp32 connected with 4G to relay national family mqtt communications into our cabin which lies really remote and outside cell coverage. Love from Norway
Great update. Ducting is more common in late spring and summer. and it can change and more around. Watching the beacons is really neat seeing how tropospheric ducting is working. Love the E-bike stuff . it's in the USA as well with Meshtastic and the drone stuff. Great fun how you bring it all together . The music is awesome ! Cheers from NY/ USA !!
Andy Paul from Orpington great video your so right with the propagation in getting stations in Cambridge Peterbrough 86 miles away thank you your videos are so good
One feature that would be very useful in Meshtastic is a mode like PSK Reporter in FT8, so people can tell how far away their nodes are being received. This would allow them to optimise nodes, antennas, repeaters etc and discontinue those that add little value. I am currently receiving loads of nodes (some over 100 miles away), but since I cannot reliable run a 'Trace Route' with many of them, I don't know how far away I am being received, Does anyone else agree?
Agree! There is a Meshatstic module NeighbourInfo. But it is disabled by default. If it is enabled at remote node and your node is received by that node directly, your node will be added to NeighbourInfo list with SNR how they receive you. That list is the broadcasted every 15min and also pushed to mqtt (provided that is enabled) Then you will see your node on Liam Cote Meshatstic map. A bit like psk reporter. But as you see a few things need to be configured in order to achieve that... I thinks Devs need to make it enabled by default. (For some reason, they think its bandwidth hungry). Well, not more than Telemetry . That leaves us with Traceroute as only option to tell if we are received. In my experience if a direct node doesn't comeback with Traceroute, then they are not receiving you.
i have also had odd distances appear, well beyond what's possible. i reset the nodedb. remember, users can manually set location and maybe they're wrong!
Nice vid.... i like the fact that you mentioned that you have gone back to just using one localised node at base to reduce hops. This should be the protocol. Tbf i have done similar as i lost interest for a short while but left a single node live. Im noticing better performance in the local area (ringway) south mcr...
I think you hit the nail on the head with your comment that meshtastic, at the moment, is about the hobby and fun element! I like you am blown away that you can get a connection to a node in the Netherlands even if chances of a communication as such are slim at the moment! This brings back the excitement of the early days of CB in the 70/80’s. If it was too successful I think that would be more likely to kill it off! Like having guaranteed, predictable skip and no random connections to make your day!
Did you already have a video showing how to build this Pico node? Is it cheaper to build and/or more energy efficient than a RAK? Keep up the great work!
while watching i had to think about 35 years ago when i did packet radio which in essence is the same as this. The speed back then was 1200bd or 2400bd if you had a better modem. Popular bands here where 27Mhz and 2m.
I'm a week into my meshtastic journey. After joining your discord and watching several of your videos (and building and setting up a heltec v3 (with another v3 board being delivered tomorrow), I feel like unless you have a reasonable knowledge of HAM or similar, you're not welcome in the community. I'm just about ready to call it a day
I don't think this is true at all. Most of the users aren't even Hams, we all try and help newcomers as much as we can... from what I've seen on my discord anyway?
Organization. A word that is minimized as an open source project. You need to design and build something with it. Become a brand that spearheads the organization.
I gave up on meshtastic. Dont get me wrong its clever, perhaps useful in certain situations but im more an analogue kinda guy. I was hoping it would be like Arduino which it sort of is but kept facing various problems and in the end was like is all this effort worth it to send a text to some random person miles away. Well for me personally, no, but still appreciate the explanation and demo. 😎👍
Question for you or the commenters if I have a private channel between two nodes and move a node out so it is like two hops away, will the private channel still work and be passed between the hop nodes to reach my other node or is it just the public channel that will be passed over the mesh network? thanks in advance
As I say, it's important to understand how the different parts of the system works. Beacons are smaller packets of data and they get repeated over and over, they propagate over the mesh more effectively. Messaging requires more overhead so signal strength needs to be much much better to have it work successfully.
Meshtastic ....I love it, I hate it, its great, its rubbish. Looking forward to the illegal Chinese bike review, i bet that was a free sample and will be "the best ever" and an affiliate link for anyone who wants to get pulled by the plod. result.

There's a Meshtastic plane that flies over occasionally that also gives me nodes in Europe.
Meshtastic needs an uplink to a server that calculates the best setting for the device.

How you prevent them from overheating in really hot areas?
It's only really the ESP32 devices that get warm, using Nrf52 or 2040 devices run cold.
By wearing a vest ?😅
Exactly!
The discrepancy between the success of the beacon packets and the flakiness of the message packets is really frustrating.
