  • Another great beginner song for your Ukulele, today we are teaching you Hit The Road Jack by the great Ray Charles. First we grab our Ukulele teach you the chords, and than the basic strum pattern and than the medium version and than the complicated version. The Hit The Road Jack Ukulele lesson contains tabulator for the song and changing graphics as well so you can make sure that you hit this song out of the park. Hit The Road Jack has a none diatonic chord as well, the E7 is supposed to be in Em chord in normal minor harmony so that E7 in this beginner song not only gives you a sophisticated sound on your Ukulele but the it has a driving groove that is fantastic as well. The groove of hit The Road Jack is a fundamental part of this beginner song as well.
    A little bit of history about Hit the Road Jack. It was written by R&B legend Percy Mayfield and once recorded by Ray Charles the song hit number one on the the Billboard chart for two weeks. It also hit #1 on the R&B chart and stayed there for 5 weeks, making Hit The Road Jack Ray Charles' 8th song to do as much. Hit the Road Jack is #387 on Rolling Stones 500 greatest songs list.

    I am new to the uke, your lessons have helped me a lot. 1 Question, why do you switch from the Luna to the Martin??? Just curious.

    • @TenThumbsProductions
      @TenThumbsProductions  7 лет назад

      Hey Tim! Great question. I still play my Luna a lot, when I travel and I can only take one I take the Luna. I usually have my Luna in an alternate tuning when I am home trying to create something new, open C, down a half step, a shotty atempt at DADGAD, so I usually don't just grab it. That is the real big reason, the other reason I I really love soprano Ukuleles and my Luna is a concert, most people really love the bigger Ukuleles, like the tenors, but I think the smaller the Ukulele the more it sounds like an "ukulele," I don't know if that makes sense or not. I still love the Luna though!

    Amazing tutorial! But I have a problem with changing the chords, I mean I guess it's pretty basic thing, but when I change from G to F i'ts really hard, my whole hand needs to change position..and how do you hold the neck of the ukulele... I know it's weird and stupid, but what am I doing wrong and how to fix it ? I basicallly have problem with changing chords fast and not smashing my fingers like an idiot :D

    • @TenThumbsProductions
      @TenThumbsProductions  9 лет назад

      Hahaha, it takes time. The principal thing is not to really worry about it and know that it takes time. Another good way to practice it is to just change on the first beat of the song so you can change them low. We are getting ready to do a Fleetwood Mac song here that is just a G and an F chord, really good practice to change between the two. It really just takes time. Sometimes just practice changing and strumming and don't worry about the song. Hope that helps!

    • @TenThumbsProductions

      Yeah, I play a low G too, based on some surveys and limited study we have done less than 1% of our students have a low G though, but you are totally right. Songs like "The Joker" by Steve Miller we did with both a low G and a high G to illustrate that point. Thanks for the tips, you are totally right too, this song would sound great with a low G!

    • @usernamemykel
      @usernamemykel 7 лет назад

      Let me tell you a little story.
      I belong to a ham radio club. At one of the meetings, a member mentioned that he thought he'd like to learn to play a ukulele, that was all he said about it. I took the thought home with me, because as a player of stringed instruments, I thought I'd do some research to present to him at the next meeting.
      I went to forums, manufacturers' web sites, and RUclips. On YT I found Honoka & Azita, plus Jake Shimabukuro. I was fascinated by what I had seen and heard - no hula gals dancing to strumming Samoans, but REAL music of very high quality. So, Amazon introduced me to a Lohanu uke. Then I bought a bigger Lohanu (tenor) uke. Then I visited a uke store in Fort Lauderdale, tried about half a dozen ukes and bought a very nice Kala KA-SRMT-TRI, and my latest acquisition is a Kanilea K2T. All this because someone else spoke very briefly about a ukulele. All this occurred within a four month period, BTW. Am I smitten? You betcha!

    • @usernamemykel
      @usernamemykel 7 лет назад

      BTW- I play only solos, like Jake, but he is light years ahead of me, for sure.
