Technically the Onmyoryo still exists. It was abolished during the Meiji restoration upon the death of its last proper grand master Tsuchimikado Haruo, but its functions were split into three organizations (two of which fell under the purview of the IJN) but one (the astrology department) was allowed to exist under Tsuchimikado Harenaga, the last Onryo-no-kami, for a while before it was also abolished and absorbed into the Jingi-kan in 1872. The jingi-kan was abolished in 1945 and its functions were absorbed into the Imperial Household Agency as the 式部職 (Shikibu-shoku), or the Board of Ceremonies. So the Board of Ceremonies, which still performs many of the old ritual functions of the Onmyoryo - the latest of which the series of divinations on the enthronement of the new emperor - is the modern-day version and descendant of the Onmyoryo.
Very interesting. Thank you for sharing
Thank yoi for this information.

The fact that Japan still has such a long-standing, intact and unbroken spiritual tradition like this always fascinated me.

Bonus fact: The most powerfull (and famous) Onmyōji was Abe no Seimei.
Which should not suprise us because his mother was a Kitsune.
Foxes produce the best onmyoji
Abe no Seimei was the original Merlin, change my mind.
@@mikhailthegreatestdragon3627 I can't do that. Merlin's mother claimed his father was The Devil...so...you may be right.
You've also got Merlin from Arthurian Legend, who's father was an Incubus. No wonder people sometimes pair Kitsune up with Succubi, they're roughly counterparts of each other to the point where there was that one weird time when Kitsune started acting like Succubi.

Yes. The first time I got introduced to Onmyoji was in Nura: Series. Yura Keikain, a prodigy onmyoji, is my top favourite. She’s so tsunade (she is shy with her feelings).
You mean tsundere. Tsunade is the busty blonde in Naruto. But I agree with you. Yura Keikain also has a great backstory.
Mine was Shounen Onmyoji, following the story of the grandchild of the Abe-no-Seimei (Think merlin but R E A L), Abe-no-Masahiro.

I feel like there's potential for a good Onmyoji Detective game where one uses genuine logic to find murderers.

Chunbiyo-ministry...
This was interesting to me for an equally interesting reason. If you don't play it already, you'd probably enjoy Nintendo's Dragalia Lost. It has a fair amount of folklore. Along with the main story, there are side stories which often take the form of raid battles. Some of these, particularly around New Year's, deal with travelers from a land called "Hinomoto", which is clearly based on Japan. The current raid battle is another Hinomoto story, and one of the characters, Seimei, is an Onmyoji. The star symbol you pictured appears when you use one of his special attacks.
