I was on the USS America CVA 66 from 1971 through 1974. A good friend of mine worked on the flight deck. He was in squadron VA 82. He accidentally walked behind a jet that was firing up one day and got blown off the flight deck. By the time the rescue helicopter got to him he had gone down. He was 19 years old. No, a waste of money would be if you DIDN'T have these men and women protecting lives and material from being destroyed. Lives are priceless and the material (the jets and so on) are all worth millions and millions of dollars each. This is insurance against disaster because if you're going to have a mistake with a jet on an aircraft carrier, it's going to be a DISASTER. No way around it. Of course people know which way to fly, but that just isn't the point. It's the same reason you have safety protocols and safety crews involved in ANY heavy machinery or vehicle use.
I'ma combo welder, and work in naval Shipyards, just left Newport news,VA and the Norfolk, VA after being there 13 months this was my 3rd time there, anyway VA is by far my favorite place out of eeeeeeevery state I've been in, 43-44 to be exact buuuut if your a welder it is a huuuge deal to weld on naval carriers and submarines, very cramped, 50% are very complicated, using mirrors most of the time, idk seeing this reminds me of it, really really cool but swore I wouldn't do it again, single hand welders in Newport news are right at $60/hr and $155-$175/day per diem which for a single hand is rather well, buuuut just remember your Gona be jammed smooooooth up 60-70% of the time, with quality control up your bum 80-90% of the time, not only that their quality assurance is way overkill, believe me I take massive pride in my workmanship but some naval quality codes is unrealistically overkill
Aside from the obvious dangers of working on a flight deck, my understanding is that the environment itself is toxic. These folks are so good at what they do, the rest us get to sleep peacefully. Thank you for your service hardly pays the debt we owe.
