  • Many airshows draw a crowd from within a 50-mile radius. The Moses Lake Airshow famously boasts an audience that comes from farther away -- sometimes hundreds of miles -- to visit this site in the middle of Washington state's agricultural section, typically sunnier and drier than the crowded Puget Sound region surrounding Seattle on the other side of the Cascade Mountains to the west.
New for the 2024 edition of the Moses Lake airshow is a Short Takeoff and Landing, or STOL competition on a dirt strip cut into the turf in front of the show line. Show announcers said the billowing dust on the strip, occasionally watered down, is a vestige of the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens, when inches of fine ash were deposited over Moses Lake.
The STOL competition uses a yellow line in the dirt, with tape measures counting the inches and feet ahead of the line. Aircraft must takeoff with mainwheels positioned on the line, and must land with the first wheel touching the ground just beyond the line, or else the flight is not counted. A short takeoff run, followed by a circuit and a landing as close to the far side of the line as possible, allow judges to score the contestants.
Some pilots approach landing with wheel brakes already applied, skidding to a short halt in the soft soil as they spew earth behind the wheels.
2024 marks the 75th anniversary of the first flight of the North American T-28 Trojan trainer. Three T-28s came to Moses Lake this year.
A large C-17 Globemaster III transport from the 62nd Airlift Wing flew during the air show. Captured in slow motion, we added music since the ambient audio would be useless at this speed.
And that's something you'll know about our Airailimages Channel -- we strive to use ambient audio with aircraft sounds as much as possible, but occasionally we must remove the ambient audio track for reasons like slow motion, and also especially whenever an air show plays commercial music over its speaker system for which we do not own the rights.
The tally of stored 737 jet airliners is diminishing from previous years, as more of the aircraft are delivered.
Moses Lake's airshow hosted a demonstration by some of the top RC aircraft pilots in the U.S. Not a sidelight, this morning event was a full partner in the day's schedule.
Some of the jet-powered fighters in the models gathered for the show can top $25,000 in price.
I'm Fred Johnsen for the Airailimages Channel. Thank you for watching, and thanks especially for subscribing and hitting the Thumbs Up button. We look forward to your comments about this video. Did you come to the Moses lake show? From how far away?

These comments are from Debbie. Liked the different intro to this video Fred. Enjoyed the parts about STOL racing because I don't know much about that type of flying. Usually I fast forward through RC but your photography is so good watched every second. Great overview of all that went on at this year's Moses Lake Airshow😊

Am on the road at Oshkosh, then traveling west. Happy to share, but it could be a week or 10 days before I access those files.

@@airailimages thanks for getting back to me. I had the Reno Airshow ask me for some in flight photos with the new graphics. Moses Lake was our first show with that scheme!

Good air show videography, Fred. I haven't been to Moses Lake sine I was with BIFC (now NIFC). That was a long time ago.

Thanks! Yes, I remember photographing a C-130 Low Altitude Parachute Extraction System (LAPES) airdrop out the back of a low-flying C-130E at the drop zone the AF kept at Moses Lake a few years after the eruption, and the clouds of ash kicked up by that airdrop were amazing.

First time i saw one of those T28's in person, I could not believe how big they are.....And they were a trainer????

Yes, a trainer riding behind, essentially, one of the same engines the B-17 used! A rugged big trainer that lent itself to some ground-attack modifications, too. Thanks for watching.
