    The New York Transit Museum was the first museum I went to. I absolutely loved it. Flushing is also an awesome spot.

    I was in Flushing, Queens on my first trip to New York and it reminded me China much more than any Chinatown in the World I have ever seen. Real China doesn't have any oriental vibe anymore and became highly developed and commercialised country. Chinatowns are cool but more like romanticized places from the past and Flushing is more authentic.

    Native NY-er here & this is an excellent list!
    I’d also throw in the Bronx Zoo & New York Botanical Gardens, the NYBG in The Bronx is only 20 minutes from Grand Central Station on the Metro North Railroad. It recently held a really cool exhibition by Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama!
    They don’t seem to have a joint ticket but I think they are free or discounted on Wednesdays.
    You may need to reserve tickets online in the days before visiting them.

      @@Wickedbutterfly8i8 you would have to the F to 63rd and Lexington than take the 5 but it doesn't run exactly to the botanical gardens so you most likely have to take a bus or walk

    We still have masking requirements for transit. Many shops also want it. Also, you should check (I have not been to theatre in a long time) masking and vaccine still in place to see a show.

    I hit the Brooklyn Botanical Garden on my first day in NYC and I can't wait to go again with my sister next time! I was killing time waiting on her to arrive into the city and it was sooo gorgeous I loved seeing the koi fish and a ton of plants I've never seen before! Sadly wasn't cherry blossom season but good gosh it was still just such a lovely way to spend my first ever afternoon in NYC. Sadly it won't be this year but I really hope to go back sometime during a cherry blossom season and and another time during the fall, my favorite time of the year, and see what's blooming then. And Off Broadway is so on our radar! We only had time for one show so we made it our favorite, good ol' Hamilton, but hopefully next time we're definitely getting to more shows next time! Love your content!

    Here is my top secret gem from when I was there, and it's so obvious but not really. I discovered this when I got on the wrong train and it took me on the opposite side of Central Park then where I needed to be and it was hot as hell outside to walk. Tourists always flock to take the Subway. But taking just a regular above ground bus gives you these amazing scenic views of the city and neighborhoods. Using it during business hours while New Yorkers were working means it's not overly busy and you can get a seat...with air-conditioning. All I needed (at the time) was a MetroCard (and I had a week pass). I mean, yes, it might take a bit longer (depending), and it takes a bit to understand the routing rules, so if you are in a rush to get to a site, then take a cab or the Subway. But for me, it was a perfect way to travel on the hot summer July day. I found the subway to be hot, sticky, stinky, crowded and I was generally uncomfortable, and at time felt unsafe, so I just ended up taking bus's for the rest of my trip. (I realize this isn't an attraction per se, but like I said, it's a great way to see the city).
    My other gem, and maybe it's not a gem, was to hit up the small business/independent stores and restaurants and shops a block or two off the heavy tourist areas. I have friends who travel to NY and they eat at all these chain restaurants and over-priced tourist traps in the heart of the tourists areas. I go, and I find these pizza houses in brownstones, or bookstores in the middle of a residential area in Brooklyn, or a coffee shop a few further blocks away from Central Park, and you get value for your money and what feels like a local experience.

    Visited NYC for the first time this week for the US Open. Stayed in Downtown Flushing to be close to the tennis despite people's recommendations to stay in Manhattan. So glad I stayed in Flushing. I loved it! The food was great, it felt completely safe, it was cheap, and it was so cool to immerse myself in another culture that didn't involve tourist traps. Will probably stay there again next time.

  • @briandube9429
    @briandube9429 2 года назад +3

    I would nix governors island. I have lived in NYC for 53 years and have toured so many around town and have been to all of these locations. Keep in mind that what appeals to a resident often does not appeal to a visitor. We often look for an element of respite, calm, quiet, escape from the intensity in NYC. But tourists come expecting that. They often want a culture fix, to be energized, to pack activities and sights in. They will relax when they return home. Some places offer both - like Central Park. Calming, yet alive with energy, activity with buildings framing the park. The other choices in the video are good, but I always try and read a visitor to tailor suggestions to their temperament. My father was always happiest to just relax on a park bench, the rest of the family wanted nonstop action.

    • @HereBeBarr
      @HereBeBarr  2 года назад +3

      That's a very interesting point! You know, I think for SOME that would apply. For others, taking the boat though, and a 1 hour bike ride around to see the Skyline views would be appealing. Just depends on the tourist. I do have a personal bias for sure :)

  • @yugioht42
    @yugioht42 2 года назад +2

    my usual in NYC is different as i don't like the massive crowds of tourists as i come from Orlando tourist hot spot. My usual is Chinatown as my parents always ask me to find one thing or another that you can't find in florida. I'll hit Williamsburg, the fountain in central park, madison square park if the musicians are gone and try flushing. My home base tends to be Chinatown as its a place that i know the language and can get my bearings around. Usually you have a neighborhood that you base or travel to a lot so you use that as a place to get used to a city i chose Chinatown as the subway is right there, i speak cantonese, and its a quick way to get somewhere.

    I'd say most of these ideas are more for people who stay in NYC for a longer period. I mean, Prospect Park is nice, but so are many other parks. Over here in The Netherlands in Amsterdam we have lots of great city parks like the famous Vondelpark. When the weather is nice, everyone goes and chill out there. And the best thing is, we can legally drink outside so many bring a cooler with beers or a nice rose wine. So yeah, while Prospect Park seems nice, I'm not gonna spend thousands on flights and hotels to do something I can do at home just as well, if not better.
    What tourists look for, or at least I look for, are experiences unique to the place I'm visiting. That's why locations like the MoMA are so busy. NYC is a center of modern art with artists like Warhol. It's a unique NYC experience. If I want to see old European art or Roman statues or whatever I'll just go to the Rijksmuseum here in Amsterdam... What I did like very much was the free exhibition in the main branch library. Such cool and important pieces on display there, many unique to NYC or the US in general.

    I went to either the Transit Museum Store or the NYC MTA Store, I don't know if the store I went to is two separate things I'm getting them mixed up, the store i went to wasn't in a museum or in an old subway station, it didn't have old subways cars to look at, the store i went to might have been in Grand Central Station, I tired on boots that had the different subway lines on them letters and numbers, the small were too small the medium were too big, darn I wanted those boots, I wouldn't have worn the boots in NYC need to be more subtle than that but wearing them around DC would have been cool, I love walking around Governors Island, hanging out, and taking the boat

    I wouldn't really count Governors island anymore. There are some plans actually every plan that will expand Manhattan calls for it to be landfilled all the way through the island and more to create new useable land for building and what will left is just a minor park like a small green space. its something that the City really wants to do but its not a vote or anything just drawings right now but if it happens Governors Island will be gone. just letting you know.

    Awesome timing. I will be in Brooklyn for my first month back to NYC! Can you make a video about dog friendly places to take your dog in NYC?

      Oooh! Pretty much anything that has outdoor dining is dog friendly along with most breweries ( as long as they don’t serve their own food). There’s also a few dog friendly cafes one is Boris & Horton in Manhattan and Chateau Le Woof in Astoria queens.

      Look up NYC Parks dog play areas. If the one on Madison Square Park is open it's great spot and near original Shake Shack.

    If you’re going to go all the way out to Flushing, you should just spend the entire day on Roosevelt Avenue stuffing your face. Get off in Woodside or Jackson Heights, and then eat your way down the street all the way until you get to flushing.
