    Hi Chris. You just saved me hundreds of dollars. I was about to buy the B&W hardcase but after seeing your video, I found a used Delsey for less than 100 USD. Thanks again and happy travels!!

      Hi Dr. Zee
      The great thing about the Delsey is the extra space to carry clothes, shoes and other items.
      And you check in as a regular luggage.
      Get some cardboard to protect the Brompton. Better safe than sorry.
      Nice to have you on board!

    We have been doing the same with Sansinite over-size bags since United charged us $150 each for our small bikes three years ago, and we were flying first class from LA to New York. Our new Brompton T 12 speeds will arrive soon and be lighter at 7-8 kg. I use foam protection from other bikes at my dealer. United is the first airline to charge, and we fly regularly worldwide. We flow back by United, and it worked 100%

    Very useful information. But what do you do with this big bag when you arrive? You have to arrange to store it somewhere and then you have to return to the same place to collect it?
    I use Ikea Dimpa bag inside a dedicated Brompton BwH Koffer heavy duty Cordura bag which I bought with my first Brompton 20 years ago. Like you I use card board and also my foam sleeping mat to protect my Brompton. I remove the seat and seat post just take it out, no need to take off the saddle. I use pipe foam lagging around the seat post to give protection to it and the rest of the bike protection to stop damage. I remove the outer pedal as I have SPD pedals and deflate the tyres. My tools and any other stuff I cannot take on board inside the aircraft goes with the Brompton. Total weight usually 17-18kg.
    The biggest worry flying with a bike, any bike, not just a Brompton, is that it will go 'missing', but fortunately that has never happened yet.
    One other highly recommended tip is to place an AirTag in your case or on/in your Brompton so if it does get lost you can locate it.

    • @ChrisbyBike
      @ChrisbyBike  2 года назад +1

      Hi Alex Morgan
      I love your tips, and your experience.
      There are 3 ways that I travel with my Brompton.
      My favorite is to take it with me inside the airplane. Not always possible because of the weight (12kg my Brompton).
      Second favorite, and use for biketouring. Is the Ikea bag, easy to fold later and carry in the Brompton bag.
      And , for the trips that I'm staying at the same hotel I use the big luggage.
      The cardboard and foam do a great job.
      Love to start my bike trip from the airport. My first choice 😊

    Some luggage is able to expand to a larger size, with an extra zipper round it? But with a bike as expensive as a Brompton I do prefer my solid B&W travel box for the purpose, making reasonable sure that nothing happens to it! And it's just another box, not to be differentiated from any other kind of luggage. But we, my wife and I hardly travels in planes any more, as she is afraid that something may happen to one of us, as now both 74, and seemingly still with Covid19 variants around. So we go by car able to bring my Brompton inside anyway. Finn. Denmark

      Hi Finn Carl Bomholt Sørensen
      That's the best option. And Bromptons are perfect for traveling in a car. The use a small space.

    • @ltu42

      The B&W case is about a 1/3 as expensive as the Brompton itself. A soft suitcase with some padding is a reasonable compromise.

    Thank you Chris!! Do you take out the air of your wheels for flying? I heard they could explode due the preassure.

    • @ChrisbyBike
      @ChrisbyBike  Год назад

      Hi Enrique Delgado Itt
      Yes, is safer to take some air out of the tires.
      But you can live 60psi on them that will be enough to ride safely and there is a good margin not to blow out the tires.
      Nice to have you on board!

    • @ChrisbyBike
      @ChrisbyBike  2 года назад

      Hi Noredmx
      There is a E hook that fix the front wheel to the frame when you fold the Brompton.
      When packing your Brompton to check-in, is good to take it out, so it will not brake.
      Nice to have you on board!

      Hi Glaucio Gaiäo
      The Delsey Paris 29 fit perfectly.
      Look for shorter and wider luggage.
      The best way is to take the Brompton with you when shopping for your luggage. This way you can see if it fits.
      Just remember that, usually, we have to take the saddle out.
      Nice to have you on board!

    That bike fee is ridiculous it isn't like the bike doesn't fit on a humongous plane or even weight that much most weight under 25 lbs it isn't a burden for employees to load that we used to load heavier at fed ex. There should be no fee but 150 each way is just disrespectful to customers it should be illegal.

    • @ChrisbyBike
      @ChrisbyBike  10 месяцев назад +1

      Hi Jesus X
      I do agree with you. It is light and very small.
      It should be aloud, on every airline, to be carried in the head bin as a hand luggage. It fits perfectly.
      But if we pack as a bicycle they charge a large fee. If you put in a suitcase it goes as luggage.
      Nice to have you on board!
