Maybe late, but destruction of Fox's Arwing doesn't automatically spell death, if it happens in an all-range mission/segment that starts on foot and has an arwing available (and same with the Landmaster in any of the missions featuring it), and if he has enough health. If the Arwing explodes over a pitfall or you somehow manage to drive the Landmaster off the edge, though...
