Matthew Mitcham made diving history at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. At the Men's 10m platform, the Australian, who was in second place after 5 out of 6 dives, needed the highest score dive in diving history to beat Zhou Luxin of China - and he delivered!

Imagine being so close to winning an olympic until your competitor performs a perfect dive before your eyes
That's an easy loss to swallow, actually.
In front of*
Yeah that happened to me last olympic
Literally all those dives looked perfect. I'm at a loss as to how his dive was in any way different than the Chinese guys
@@TheChrist4ylor his technique was just better. If you look at the slow mo, you see him perform each maneuver fully, he got good height without traveling too far to the front or side, his body is aligned literally almost perfectly when he enters the water, his feet are together, and a big thing too, very little water splashed. That just shows how straight his body was when he entered the water. Yeah, the Chinese diver was really good, but his was just amplified. I've only ever watched te sport, I'm sure someone more qualified cam point out the differences better, but from an audience's perspective, those are just some of the things to look for
Note to the editor: the slow-mo at 1:36 is not from the winning dive...
It was the dive right before that one, the 5255B dont know why they couldnt have captioned which dive it was when it's the highest of all time??!
that made me angry
Obviously
Thanks, the montage is really confusing.
Wow that is embarrassing
That splash is smaller than a pebble hitting the water.
Matthew Mitcham:
Me when I put my toe in the water: Sploosh!
Wrong, a pebble hitting the water will make a smaller splash.
Gave me bumps o.o'
Ikr
And it he did under greater pressure being the last dive. IMPRESSIVE
A replay of the actual dive would have been nice.
No i prefer it with a bunch of edits and crappy music
@@AD-sp5cv lmfao 🤣🤣🤣🤣
We can slo-mo the winning dive on settings!
@@carolmiller5713 if only we knew which one
@@AD-sp5cv dude I’m still choking on my coffee from your comment. You’re the best.
Matthew was coached by Salvador "Chava" Sobrino, the best mexican diving specialist at that time and hired by Aussie team in the smartest move I've seen in this sport in a long time. I was watching mexican broadcast and even the commentators were so happy for Matthew and really enthusiastic for "Chava", they interviewed both almost crying!
Awwwww wow great information thanks.
Salvador Sobrino. Will make note of his name!
Thanks again.
thats awesome thanks for posting, much love from Florida!
Awesome!
No one cares
@@not-woke -I, & 15K ( so far) DO care ... You're 1 of the 389 (so far) who DON'T!
I wish the slow-mo replay after the record-setting dive was actually OF the record-setting dive!!
Exactly. What was that?
@@5TA1KR Very poor editing.
Watch it in 0.25
this video is stupid.
But it was no?
Diving is so aesthetically-pleasing to watch! I really respect how hard these athletes had to work to master their sport. The discipline, the physical prowess, the agility, the strength, the grace, the ease in which they perform is commendable! They should all be very proud of themselves - proud, not arrogant; confident, not cocky! Well done, people!
I watched this live on TV when it happened, and I could not believe it. I am Australian and I could not believe an Australian would be able to perform such a perfect dive on demand and win against all odds over the Chinese. I was shocked and ecstatic at the same time. Well done, you're immortal.
Yeah it is kinda against all odds cause the Chinese always dominate in diving.. You can be really proud of your fellow Australian!! 😁
@@evab.6240 So you're a model from Slovenia? 🤔🇸🇮
@@Sidionian bruh LMAO can she comment without getting hit on
@@jonathantran7102 this is so nice tbh
Why couldn't an Australian do that?!! Come on!
Who could ever forget this one?
@KombatBard i second the motion my friend never knew this either.😅
@KombatBard same 😏
@KombatBard same here dear. ধন্যবাদ...
thanks
Me: I was 4 lmao
Probably people with dementia
Stunning. Tears of joy bless him. I don't know much about diving but the teeny tiny bit of ripple and the spinny stuff was 🔥🔥🔥
Lol
Haha the spinny spinny stuff lmao
@Joshua Lister That was funny Joshua. I like your sense of humour.😁
Joshua Lister: Thanks Joshua. Only just got this notification 8 p.m. 4th August. Don’t know who you are or even which country you live in but the fact that you’d had a tough day somehow has driven home to me and made me sad. Hope it was “one off” and that all’s well now. Greetings from Wales, U.K.
@Joshua Lister I have to say the day I saw this was a tough nhs day here in uk and it made me smile
The record has just been broken a few minutes ago, Chinise diver Yang Jian scored 112.75, got a total of 580 points but he still lost
Takes two to tango, 1st place didn’t flop this time (ie China usually averages in the mid 90s or better on final dive).
Post a link to the video
@@TheJewinator bro he watched it live…
When Matt Mitcham did it the highest degree of difficulty was 3.8, which means a perfect score was 114 and the highest possible score apart from a perfect one was 112.1 - (10.0 + 10.0 + 9.5) x 3.8.
Please see my comment above; “records” in judged events are really meaningless.
"No matter how good you are at something, there's always an Asian better than you"
Matthew Mitcham: well, hold my little towel
@@CarstenNRW ok mate
Yeah, that literally was true until the last dive. The point is the Asian guy had the consistency while the Aussie guy did well on that particular day
@@dgr8oneme And that is about, who does the BEST performance on the day.
Diving is the only sport the Asian might be better at.I think it may have something to do with weighing 90 lbs
Lol after that day Asian clean all
i forgot how much excitement it adds when there’s actually a crowd
Frfr
What an amazing humble athlete! His tears of happyness were all... Congrats Champion!!!!!! Love from Argentina
WOW his final jump 1:28 was so magical that it looked completely different in slow Motion 1:36. That is pure talent and well deserved
Actually they were different jumps the editor seems to have made a mistake I guess
That was the joke
I remember watching this live and actually shed a few tears, was so proud of a fellow Aussie! 🥺
"Would need the highest score in diving history"... no pressure then lol
1:36 That wasn't a replay of that 1:28 dive lol.
It's a shame, would've liked a replay of that one, which definitely looked much harder to accomplish!
yeah that was really weird. also the degree of difficulty on the 1:28 dive is significantly higher than the 407c at 1:36
I saw that dive competition live on TV. I saw him beat the Chinese. It was neck and neck then he just ripped it. He was also adorable. SO cute. Hope he's somewhere happy and living his best life.
Best wishes to all Tokyo Olympians from NYC! It's a strange year, but you can do this and show the world the Olympian spirit.
Zhou Luxin: I am inevitable
Matthew Mitcham: I am Matthew
Zhou Luxin: here is your bronze medal.
His smile as he's swimming our of the pool, he knew he nailed that dive 😊
The music edit is on point! The change when he jumps off 1:28 🙌
I'm a former AAU swimmer and half my friends were divers. This guy is impressive! Wow!
Exactly. 💣
Today in the Tokyo Olympics, Chinese female diver on 10M platform got all 10 from all the judges. That's f**king incredible. I've never witnessed anything like this in my life.
And she's only 14
@@jxswu3224 yeah so amazing! The silver medalist is from China, too, and she's just 15, tpp. Wow!
and she did it twice. that was crazy to witness
I thought Zhou Luxin was superb! But Mitcham was also perfect. Wow! Such talent across the globe. What formidable divers!
Glued to the screen. Could he do it.
We know the answer.
Pity the last slow mo of Mathew isn't the last dive he performed.
indeed. weird editing choice. That last dive needed a slow-mo replay it was so perfect
Yeah, that was strange. I went back and watched it on mute at 0.25 speed, though - it's flawless!
I've watched this so many times. Incredible. What a boss. We're so proud of you Matthew
I remember watching this live. It was bloody amazing. Go Matt!
Zhou Luxin of China’s dive they showed just before his was also flawless! He was in tears afterwards, but he had NOTHING to be ashamed of. The dive they showed was perfection as well, just a hair less difficulty.
Yes. I thought Zhou Luxin got far too low a score for his flawless dive. Something smells bad there. But that is not to say Mathhew's dive wasn't worth what it got.
@@LeahRobb -- I have no clue if he was cheated, there is such a thing as 2 dives being perfect, but one may have a higher degree of difficulty so it gets a slightly higher score. My only point was Zhou Luxin did a near or an absolutely perfect dive. There is zero shame in what he did. He was crying while deserving everyone's respect.
@@Erin-Thor I don't think LeahRobb meant Zhou Luxin cheated. He meant that Zhou got a score lower than he was awarded.
@@stickymoney - I said was cheated, not that he cheated. 😎
@@Erin-Thor great to be aligned.
Sorry, but the highest scoring diver of all time has to be Neymar Jr.
Bruh
This is golden
🤣🤣🤣👌👌👌
Lol
Ikr🤣
I remember that night!!!!! I stayed up to date watch it and I cried like a baby. ❤️ ❤️ ❤️
What a clutch performance... imagine needing to pull off the best dive in history to win gold... and then doing it!
This was broken by this years 10m dive by Yang Jian. Who was in second place and about 15 points behind. He scored 112.75. The first place Chinese scored 102.6 and won. It goes to show it takes two to tango for such a dramatic finish. It took a record dive and massive flop by Chinese standards.
Incredible... so happy for him
Title: "The Highest Scoring Dive EVER!" (1:28)
Shows replay of the wrong dive (1:36)
Me: Well done.
omg what a show, and highest score changed to 112.75 last night in tokyo
This music and playback speed makes his dive looks like business as usual.. Nice work Matty!!!!!!
(RELATIVE BTW) Judge 5 is like: impressive but a bit meh.
Lmfao
I was about to say: What happened to J5?
thank you for proving the judging is fair. because its undeniably perfect.
I love swimming and diving ever since watching Jim McKay and Wide World of Sports. Cliff diving too!
Yang Jian just broke his record!
You bloody legend Matt. Australia loves you.
The highest scoring dive ever was done by Jian Yang in 2014 in the world cup. 123 points (Quad Pike Front) 4.5 (perfect 10)
And in Olympics 2020, Yang Jian from China scored 112.75 in his final dive with a diffiulty of 4.1.
Kung Flu'ers got a 150.00 diving into pool filled with savory bat tidbits! PERFECT SCORE PMSL!

When I see them diving: flipy floppy spin spin clean dive.
When I see in slowmo: stretches leg, does splits, drinks coffee, looks at watch, spins casually, and delivers A+.
Absolutely fabulous! What a fierce competitor!
‘Sport is so inspirational’
Also sport: ‘No matter how hard you try there is always someone better than you and you’re just there to make up the numbers’
Really appreciated, congratulations to all participants 👍
The last dive and replay are 2 different dives are they not? The first is a twisting dive not tucked but the replay shows tucked legs ........? Did anybody notice that?
His final dive was a 5255B, Back 2 1/2 SS, 2 1/2 Twists Pike. It was shown right before the slowmo of his Inward 3 1/2
All of the dives I just saw look insanely precise, brilliant, & amazing.
Fantastic form with close to no splash ... beautiful 💙
What an amazing accomplishment! ❤ from the USA
Lol this guy is not even close to Neymar’s dive level.
underrated comment
hahahhaa!
lol
lame
🤣🤣🤣
Congrats from Bangladesh to Australia
I mean, I’d be pretty happy with just a solid handstand!
I would have liked to seen a replay os his actual dive and an explanation of what made it so perfect.
Olympics can this week’s throwback Thursday be the men’s 3m springboard in Beijing 2008 please
I can hardly describe how wonderful that feeling of accomplishment must have felt for him.
CONGRATULATIONS 🎉🍾
Well done Matthew Mitcham 🏆🥇
I was actually in the audience for this at the Beijing Olympics in 2008. Great event.
Pretty sure Quan Hongchan will take his place, she did so perfectly in Tokio 2020
Matthew's final dive is superior to any one of Quan's dives but only because he's got more power and is a greater gymnast. What Quan Hongchan did in 2021 this week was one of the most legendary performances in individual sports history. She transcended beyond the sport of diving itself.
Why’d you spell Tokyo like that lol
@@TheSuperanimedrawer forgot to translate, it’s written like that in German :D
@@janajanina13 that is a cute spelling haha
@@moegerms A more detailed way to explain it is simply, there are two grading systems in diving, difficulty score (both the body of the dive itself and the entrance difficulty) and execution. Men in general perform more difficult dives (for example, Quan had a difficulty rating of 3.2 whereas most men try to perform 3.6 or greater difficultyin the finals). The difference in difficulty is due to the addition of a twist during the dive in Quan vs Men case (she performed a 2 1/2 somersaults and 1 1/2 twist compared to 2 1/2 somersaults and 2 1/2 twists). Quan’s collections of dives are considered more or less perfect but in lower difficulty. The final score is the middle three execution scores multiplied by difficulty. Therefore she capped at 96 (10 been the perfect score for execution, (10+10+10$x3.2=96)
Why do you have to confuse me with the slow mo of a Random dive after what I am assuming was the winning one 🥴
Awesome flip, I really want to do something like this!
Is anyone watching this after watching the diving final today?
Did they forget that in the 2012 olympic games Chinese diver Jian yang beat this world record not once but twice performing his forward four and a half pike. First in the semi finals scoring 118 and later in the finals scoring 123 points with perfect 10's
I cant find any record of a Jian Yang being in London...or any dive close to Mitcham's score?
Is there anywhere to watch this diving competition? It was the best ever and you can't seem to watch the whole thing anywhere.
ETA I just noticed this was posted by the official Olympics channel. C'mon, guys, upload the entire competition including the medal ceremony! It was awesome!!!
This is definitely the reason for the term, "NAILED IT!"
Weird that your replay of the final dive featured the wrong dive.
his tricks are like watching a TAS in a video game
Love the music, what is the name?
I love how they are all swallowing up all of the water to not make a splash 😅
Woah!!! Congrats from Malaysia... God bless you
And now there you go HUANG from China! Out of 5 dives she scored 3 perfect 10!!!!!!
Compact. Ribcage. Preparation. Contraction. Hitting it on the head on all aspects
Today, this record has been broken by Yang. Yang scored a 112.75 dive on his last dive, although he was just short of a gold medal
Spectacularly Incredible Perfect Dive indeed! Matthew Mitcham of Australia 🇦🇺 is like a Dolphin! 🦈
Now quan from china
I love this channel!
Here after this record has been broken 🤯
Goosebumps all over. Bravo!
alrighty, time to update the video and add Quan Hongchan i reckon!
I can't wait for the Summer Olympics

I rememebr watching this and being so excited for Mitchum. Such a fantastic diver.
Congratulations! Superior !! ❤❤
WHAT IS THE SONG? WHAT A JAM!!!
The music for this vid was as perfect as those dives. And those dives were fricking amazing. Dayum!
Handsome guy
The winning dive is actually at 01:28 so adjust playback speed to the lowest setting to get a good look at the beauty and difficulty.
his reaction when he sees the score is so adorable 😭
112.75 by Yang Jian in today's final
Did I miss something at the end? I wanted to see his award wining dive, "in slow motion", (where he twists, before he tucks), and they show his previous dive. I feel cheated in this video. :(
Both of them made a really good work! However Matthew was the best! Congratulations!
Sad that the last replay isn’t the one corresponding to the previous jump…
All amazing dives, he earned that gold.. 👍👍
