  • This is a video of former Commonwealth Railways steam locomotive NM25 at the Pichi Richi Railway in Port Augusta South Australia. Steam locomotive NM 25 can be seen running around the Port Augusta railway station area while preparing for the "Afghan Express" heritage train to Quorn.
The Pichi Richi Railway is a 39 km long narrow gauge heritage railway (1067mm Queensland gauge) that operates between Port Augusta and Quorn in the ancient Flinders Ranges region of South Australia. The railway climbs up the Pichi Richi pass giving spectacular views of the arid flinders ranges.
The Pichi Richi Railway was part of the original narrow gauge Ghan line to Alice Springs in the Northern Territory. The original Ghan line had a reputation of extremely unreliable and slow trains. A new standard gauge line on a completely different route opened in 1980 bypassing the entire Flinders Ranges region.
Trains on the Pichi Richi Railway are hauled by a variety of heritage steam and diesel locomotives. However on my visit Steam locomotive NM 25 was in use. Steam locomotive NM 25 was built in 1925 in Castlemaine Victoria and are of a similar design to Queensland Rail C17 class steam locomotives.
The heritage carriages used on the Pichi Richi Railways "Afghan Express" are the original carriage that were used on the old Ghan train in the 1920s.
If you would like to visit the Pichi Richi Railway yourself the railway is located in Port Augusta which is 310km north of Adelaide in South Australia.
