Thanks for answering my question dude! Much appreciated with the honesty as well. I practice TKD, alongside some Kung Fu, and JKD in my spare time at home, so I can keep an open mind. And it's so true with what you said range-wise, where TKD is good to maintain distance with kicks, but when the fight gets close (which will be often), Wing Chun is most useful. Again, thanks a huge bunch!

I like your commentary on what your school specialises in, and that is you allow the student to determine for themselves what WC/WT means to them, totally agree with You. I've found most students over the years are just there to learn b/c it is a specific interest to them and they enjoy the practice of the art, which was the way it was for me too. Good sharing:) James

I liked that idea as well, allowing others to determine whatever their Wing Chun could be. At the same time, sloppy technique doesn’t fall under the banner of “personal expression.” Regardless of whatever Wing Chun or martial arts path you choose, you’ve to work hard at it. Pretty cool how the podcast touched on both of these ideas.

Great podcast, Sifu Alex! My thoughts:
1) interesting ideas concerning combining TKD and Wing Chun and how opposed they are. The stances of both are meant for different things. A side kick in one is different from a side kick in the other. But it’s not impossible to combine aspects of both, no? I think about the JKD guys who can switch from kicking range to in-fighting fairly easily.
2) Hearing about the corruption within the HKPD and Hong Kong in general reminds me of Mainland China. Having 關係 with a CCP member and slipping some extra RMB underneath the table can wonders.
3) Totally down for a ghosts of Hong Kong episode or series of episodes really. Hong Kong during the 20th century was really vibrant and exciting since it was the main bridge between Mainland China and the West during that time. Cultures met, clashed, mixed, and in a lot of cases were preserved. Yes, it’d be cool to hear about Triads, brothels, Kung Fu masters, hungry ghosts, and old Hong Kong movie stars. But I wonder if you had stories of regular slices of life stuff. Like did Ip Man carry one of those birdcages with him to a tea house? What was life like in Causeway Bay or even the New Territories? For me, the stories don’t have to be fancy.
Great comment as always! 1. JKD uses a 3/4 squared stance with (according to Bruce’s notes) 80% front hand 20% rear hand allowing an easier transition to more squared up WC in close as well as the ability to use stomp/thrust kicks with the rear leg as well - markedly different from TKD’s full side on hands down focus. 2. Same in most south East Asian countries! I once taught a seminar in a SE Asian country which required a permit for me to teach - I got it by giving a pack of smokes to the local cops. 3. Already planning the Ghosts of Hong Kong!

I train Northern Longfist, Xingyiquan, Northern Mantis and some Wing Chun and Hung Gar. At long range I use my Longfist and N Mantis. Medium range N Mantis, Xingyiquan and Crane from Hung Gar. In close, Wing Chun and back to Northern Longfist (throws, take downs from Shuai Jiao).
I don't like Southern footwork though. Bruce was right about that. But it's that way for a reason.
This Drayson character aught to be some sort of filmaker with these wild ideas

Imagine Bruce Lee would not have died in 1973 and would have starred in the movie "Star Wars - The Empire Strikes Back" in 1980. Would he have played a Jedi or a Sith? What do you think? And imagine what great fight scenes he would have choreographed.

No I don't think Bruce would involved with that unless he's a fight coordinator with the light sabers or 1 of his students are involved with the projects. Some of us REALLY NEED TO Start using Common Sense when it comes to comparing Bruce( or Brandon for that matter) in projects that came after their deaths! Darth Vader was a villain born of tragedy!! Chen Zeh ( Bruce's character in Chinese Connection) was a man of pure fury & rage over the death of his teacher!! Unlike Darth Vader , Zeh directed that need for vengeance towards those he held responsible for his teacher's death!! Vader wanted to control the very power of life & death because of the tragedy of his mother's
death!! That hooded lord who manipulated Jedi knights into believing they had that power played Vader into believing that! Bruce always played a hero in his movies 🎥 to fight the racial stereotypes of euro-American audiences who thought Chinese were weak or sick 😷!! A racial problem that's still exist to this very day!! Racist idiots blames covid 19 on The Chinese being COMPLETLY & TOTALLY IGNORANT to the fact The Great Old USA 🇺🇸 hands 🙌 are just as dirty! I don't believe Bruce would have been on screen in Star Wars. I see him being one of the martial arts coordinators for the film. Hell, Bruce probably would've made an investment.

QUESTION: Hi Alex, You mentioned on a recent Podcast that Wing Chun practitioners should know other techniques on the wooden dummy outside of doing Master Yip Man's form. I would love for you to do a show on the wooden dummy where you demonstrate your favorite wooden dummy work out techniques on camera. Outside of the Yip Man form, I rely on whatever I can find on RUclips or follow along to Sifu Chung Kwok Chow's great wooden dummy striking drills DVD.

Hi Alex, I enjoy the show. I have a question for you. I teach Tai Chi and Ba Gua Zhang, and I currently have a student who has trained Wing Chun before. He has shown me a few things from Wing Chun, I was surprised at how close the concepts were to what I teach. I was wondering if you have ever considered training an internal art such as Tai Chi or Ba Gua to gain a different perspective on Wing Chun?

Does anyone know which photo is the last one of Bruce Lee? I’ve seen the one in his back yard in HK which he’s extremely thin and flexing his lats. He’s wearing jeans with some kind of square checkering. I think it’s July ‘73, definitely close to the end. It’s almost sad how emaciated he is.
I believe the picture of him flexing his lats is in fact the last photo of him

Hey I'm a new subscriber really appreciate your Chanel. I recently watched two different video's about Bruce Lee that were done by Bob Wall and Joe Lewis the first one was : Bob Wall describes to Joe Lewis how he sparred with Bruce Lee on the set of Enter the Dragon. And the other is : Bob Wall describes how he sparred with Bruce Lee on the set of Enter the dragon. In the first video, Bob Wall make's it sound like Bruce was easily beaten while Joe Lewis makes a comment about Bob Wall about to destroy a legend. Have you seen these video's ? If so what's your take on them or do you think Bob Wall could take Bruce.

Sifu Alex, another entertaining and informative episode! Would definitely love to hear “Ghosts of Hong Kong” stories, especially more of your take on HK’s corruption history. As you mentioned Lui Lok in the same era, the infamous drug lord was “Bai Ho” (as in ‘hole’) - if you ever seen the movie “To Be Number One” starring Ray Lui Leung Wai, and in more recent times Donnie Yen in “Chasing the Dragon”.
Great movies! We love Baai Ho aka Limpy Ho hahah. I will definitely do this series.
But Alex, what about those claims by Jhoon Rhee that he taught Bruce Lee tkd kicks?
I can imagine he gave them some pointers about kicks or spinning kicks, but I think the word “taught” is a bit of a stretch. Bruce was already performing high kicks in his Seattle period.

I haven’t read it yet but I was just wondering if you could talk about Chi Gung, is Siu Nim Tao intended to be a form of chi gung and what kind of experiences have you had with it and how has it, if at all, affected your ability and skill in Wing Tsun. Hopefully Dreison hasn’t already asked this question but since it’s not time machine related I suspect not 😏

Great question!
Attribute training for punching is where solo training on equipment is the most beneficial. Each piece of equipment is going to give you a different feel. One inch punch is a “magic trick” that can be incorporated into training to develop the “hurting on the inside” type of strike.
QUESTION: Hi Alex, Please discuss what run-in you had with actor David Carradine several years ago. I know he had the reputation of being difficult.

@@axelstone3131 Well I wouldent say he doesnt have the attributes its just he is so damn tall he cant do as much body weight stuff like bruce or tommy but he is still pretty good but could prolly work on his physique more. And yeah Tommy is great really fast and good. I hope they make a remake or at least put metal gear solid 1-4 on better consoles but konami kinda shit themselves.
Sifu Alex, I don't know if U this actor from Taiwan ,he's a Bruce Lee imitator who turned out to be a great Cinema legend in his own right ✅. Bruce Li is his stage name & he knew both Tae Kwon Do & Wing Chun. I think comes down to the perception of the practitioner & how he bends the 2 forms

Sifu Alex, I find so dis hearting 4 any Wing Chun school downsizing another Wing Chun all because of different philosophies! Wing Chun is a 🌳 who's foundation started 300 hundreds yrs ago & branch out to world wide recognition. Inward bickering serves only to weakened our art & gives black eyes to those who fuss over over other branches!

Just started watching this and I was very interested in your comment about "who hasnt written a book about Bruce Lee " . Youre absolutely right , I remember a guy writing a book called " Bruce Lee and Me " which didnt really have much to do with bruce Lee at all but the name sells right ? So my question that has puzzled me for years is ...where is Jim Kellys book ? Did he just not ever get round to it ? Could his daughter put together a book ? I think she actually wrote a book about her father . I know Jim Kelly has got some very pertinent views on Bruce Lees legacy.
Could you get Jim kellys daughter on the show or shed some light on why he never wrote a book . That would be great

I’m sure you’ve seen those clips with Jim Kelly discussing how good Bruce Lee was as a martial artist and I just find it hard to believe that he didn’t expand more on that with others especially as he seems to be alluding to other martial artists of the era . I think I find it hard to let this subject go because if I had access to this kind of information after 40 years or so , the temptation to share it and legitimately monetise it would be pretty strong and yet I’ve only heard a couple of references to this and Jim Kelly seemed to have very clear and deeply held views on this .
Quick question: I know it’s impossible to actually know but do you think the landscape of action cinema would be different had Bruce Lee lived? For example, would Jackie Chan be the star he is today? Love the podcast! Keep up the good work!
It's difficult to imagine the landscape without Bruce... Would Jackie have been a star sooner? Would it have developed faster without years of "trying to copy Bruce Lee"? Very good thought experiment.

I did not grow up watching his films, but I did read a lot about him in Ric Meyers book. I got to see his films later in life, and he will definitely be missed.

Look again at Bruce Lee's Six Inch Punch. That's more like a 10 Inch Punch maybe a foot or more. Even the One Inch Punch is like 2 inches. It's just a name that sounds good.

Sifu Alex, I knew a fellow who thought he knew Wing Chun simply by mimicking the movements from the Ip-Man movies 🎥 or watching someone else perform the art . I sparred with him using June Fan techniques ( Bruce's conventional style of Wing Chun) after beating his "Wing Chun " I said to him, he should really study the art before claiming he's a practitioner of it
After doing jkd .. I've realized that ..it really is simply said , wing Chun done well.. freestyling once we've mattered the basics n gotten quite good.. to me Gary lam does perfect wing Chun ..evangelos too . But they do it in a Bruce lee way.. so it's kinda jkd? Wing Chun done well .

JKD is more of a philosophy. Not a particular art. Wing Chun is a style. It's almost useless by itself, but quite useful if mix with other practical combative arts.

I teach on a local Instagram page here in Boston to some of the brightest black belts in the world, im privileged to teach to some legends and they tune in everyday, but I’m largely self taught by RUclips.. after 30 years of the regular way, I doubled down n live wing chun n jkd. Couple years back, there was a fictionalized movie of 呂樂 (Lui, Lok) & 跛豪 ("Limpy Ho"), that was even showing in some AMC theaters in the US:

I prefer the earlier ones to Chasing the Dragon. Lee Rock is quite good.

See I have a unique perspective on this as I'm a newer jkd guy but I'm respected by my community and so I study not only the style and train it, but I look for BULL SHHH too... So because I have this platform on Instagram.. I can expose fake stuff and antiquated material recycled stuff and outright BITES of both style and substance.. but ya, jkd has a bunch of crappy watered down INSTRUCTORS who basically bought a certificate.. idk them personally but it shows on the materials and tactics..I wanna be clear, I'm not saying MAINSTREAM JKD at all, just RUclips and Instagram..tik tok and little mom n pop places mostly. There are some reputable places that are very talented..

Alex , I think Bruce found Jeet Kune Do to make up 4 the tutelage he lost since being in the USA. Bruce once said if he can rename JKD , he wouldn't give it a name, because the name adds imitation. I think the name "Man Can Do " is name that humanize the fighter & liberates his ideas, theories & philosophy in knowing how to" fight " his " fight "& NOT the fight of old ideas , traditions or restrictions of times so long ago. Man Can Do is strictly to the point new adding this no adding that & means exactly as it is said in plain & simple English
